Precinct Information Models to facilitate Low Carbon Built Environments bsi BIM Week, Infrastructure Room Munich, October 2013 Cooperative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living Jim Plume CRC for Low carbon Living Faculty of Built Environment, UNSW buildingsmart, Australasian Chapter
Presentation Outline Background gou to the PIM pojec project Project as proposedp Challenges that we see Opportunity to link to bsi activities Next steps
Background Progress on PIM Research UrbanIT Australian Research Council Linkage Grant (2011 UNSW Infrastruture Grant) Precinct Information Modelling (PIM) Cooperative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living : 2013: Scoping Study & full project proposal : CRC PIM Project (tbc)
UrbanIT - Cadastre & Geo-referencing in IFC Complementary development of two groups: UNSW, Australia urbanit Cadastre project, and Statsbygg, Norwegian Geo-referencing project Key objectives GIS to BIM - precise land data and context to support facility development referenced to map systems BIM to GIS - building models at appropriate LOD to support urban planning, control and management Achieve effective integration i of diverse sources of geographic, demographic and planning information UrbanIT Research Project
Land Data Conversion ifcsite entity Two geometrical representations: Cadastral boundary Terrain Specific Coordinate Reference System UrbanIT Research Project
Prototype Urban Repository UrbanIT Research Project
Map Reference & Ownership UrbanIT Research Project

UNSW Campus Model UrbanIT Research Project
BIM Energy Technology Building UrbanIT Research Project
UNSW Campus Model example of a PIM What is missing from this model? We can include buildings and civil infrastructure, but we need to begin extending the data model to we need to begin extending the data model to include other precinct elements to fully support precinct design and GIS analysis tools
Key Benefit - lifecycle application of PIM PIM provides a definitive repository of information at all stages in PRECINCT design & management based on open standards Recording needs, Performance Monitoring i Testing aspirations measurement and control scenarios and rating and simulation systems targets As required As planned As designed As managed
Background CRC for Low Carbon Living Industry 26 participants Government 16 participants Research 6 participants International 4 participants Brisbane Total participant commitments $76 M Perth Adelaide Melbourne Newcastle Sydney Precinct Information Modelling - PIM
CRC Partners Industry-led Research Government Manufacturing Development Professionals Evidence base for ~$1billion/yr investment in government programs Incubating next generation multipurpose building products Enabling world class low carbon property development Tools for Australia s building design services industry Precinct Information Modelling - PIM
CRC - what will success look like? COMMERCIALISED OUTPUTS Integrated solar building products Low carbon materials Tools and techniques for integrated design and planning Training and education packages NATIONAL CAPABILITY Six networked Nodes of Excellence built on strong partnerships Industry and professions: up skilled to lead high performance integrated design and planning Leadership: Working with UNEP to act as knowledge hub for Asia Pacific LOW CARBON IMPACTS Verified carbon reductions (annual auditing) Communities engaged in low carbon living Evidence base that underpins government policy and programs Reduced barriers to effective collaboration The impact of our integrated approach will distinguish this CRC Precinct Information Modelling - PIM
Background CRC Scoping Study Objective To identify the functionality, data and information platform required to deliver a 21st century design assessment tool for precincts that is scientifically sound for evaluating the carbon intensity, sustainability and resilience of current and future built environments. Identified needs related to PIM Open sharing of precinct data across assessment tools need for a precinct-level standard schema Precinct Object Library standard objects with associated data Access to reference data (via links from model objects) Linkage to real-time usage data for precinct management Integration of BIM and GIS models Precinct Information Modelling - PIM
PIM for Precinct Assessment
PIM Project as Proposed Funding: $750K / year over 3 years Industry-driven, di with defined d deliverables Prototype implementation through Living Laboratories Identified precincts in Adelaide, Melbourne & Sydney Real projects to test efficacy of the data model MUtopia precinct assessment Research group at University of Melbourne Recognised need for a strong semantic data model
PIM Project CRC Integration & Challenges
Identified Challenges Managing object granularity Natural & man-made landscape elements Utility distribution systems (energy, water, transport, etc) Life-cycle modelling (& design intent) Ub Urban context t Alternate planning/design scenarios PIM Scope? e.g. economic modelling, parametrics, embedded algorithm objects, etc.
Opportunity to link to Existing bsi Work Contribute to on-going development of IFC How does our work link to the Infra Project? Can we help facilitate bsi/ogc collaboration? Our wish is to complement work rather than duplicate it my reason for coming to Munich. Putting it succinctly: di driven by industryidentified research needs, our goal is to refine, through testing, a suitable common schema to support the planning, design, development and management of low carbon precincts.
Next steps? We are seeking a clear briefing on where the Infra Project is up to Should we propose a separate project, or is this seen as an extension of Infra? We need to identify suitable international partners Nominate for a position on the Infra Committee
