2 Sample Assessment Material subject to proofing and minor formatting changes SCENARIO RSA is a family owned transport company operating in Manchester. It has a Standard International Operator Licence authorising 36 vehicles and 50 trailers and currently operates 30 vehicles and 46 trailers from its sole operating centre in Manchester. The father of the family is the nominated professionally competent person. He plans to retire next month. You have been employed by the family as the Transport Manager for the company. You have responsibility for the company s operation and legal compliance. You are an international CPC holder but not nominated on the Operator Licence. The Finance Manager only deals with the production of the company s legally required accounts. The Personnel Manager provides you with support when recruiting and carries out short listing for you. Customers The company has a number of current customers and is in negotiation with others regarding substantial streams of potential new business. The key customers of interest are: Kamakazi Electricals plc RSA runs four UK routes for this company, delivering high value electrical goods to retailers and collecting returned products for warranty work. A fifth route is operated where warranty items are consolidated into unit loads and transported to Germany twice per week. Details of the five routes are as follows: Routes A and C operate on six days per week. Routes B and E operate on three days per week. Route D operates two trips per week, each of three days duration. Route A Total 500 km round trip. The vehicle s normal payload is 0 tonnes. Starts at hrs, finishes at hrs and comprises 0 hours driving, a one hour break and 4 hours other work. Route B Total 350 km round trip Starts at.00 hrs, finishes at hrs and comprises nine hours driving, a one hour break and two hours other work. Route C Total 200 km round trip Starts at hrs, finishes at 6.00 hrs and comprises six hours driving, a one hour break, one hour other work and a one hour period of availability. Route D The total land distance is a 800 km round trip. The vehicle will usually be fully laden both outbound with goods for repair and inbound with repaired goods for stock. The normal payload is 25 tonnes.
3 Sample Assessment Material subject to proofing and minor formatting changes The route operates between Manchester and Hamburg on a round trip twice per week. It starts on Day One at 3.00 hrs using the ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland. The journey to the ferry is six hours and the vehicle will be onboard for 0 hours. Embarkation and disembarkation each take 45 minutes. On Days Two and Three there are 0 hours driving on each day and a further 0 hours spent on the return ferry journey. The driver will use the sleeper cab and will have access to a bunk on the ferry for taking daily rest periods. The run is to be completed by 6.00 hrs on Day Three. The ferry costs are 550 in each direction Route E Total 450 km round trip. The vehicle s normal payload is 5 tonnes. Starts at hrs, finishes at hrs and comprises nine hours 30 minutes driving, a 30 minute break and one hour 30 minutes of other work. Each route has a single dedicated vehicle which would not normally be used on any other work. The work for Kamikaze Electricals runs 50 weeks per year with four permanent drivers carrying out all of the driving on varying shift patterns. Two agency drivers cover for holidays when required. The schedule for the four permanent drivers for the coming week is shown in the drivers table below: Day\Name John Mary Mark Jenny Mon A B C D Tue A E C D Wed B C A D Thu C A B REST Fri E C A D Sat C A E D Sun REST REST REST D Acme Foods plc A new contract has been agreed with a major manufacturer of canned foodstuffs which will require vehicles to move palletised loads from the factory to a Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) each day, Monday to Friday, starting in eight weeks time. The one way distance from the factory to the RDC is 270 km and each vehicle will return to the factory either empty or carrying a full load of empty pallets. The total number of pallets to be moved on each working day is 260. The pallets are not stackable, have dimensions of 200mm x 000mm and each weighs one tonne. The contract will be operated initially by vehicles within the existing fleet. The contract will subsequently be operated by additional new vehicles acquired exclusively for the Acme work. As a matter of principle, the configuration of any new vehicles will be identical to those in the current fleet. [Turn over
