6 Part five answers 1. This part of the novel takes place in: the bunkhouse? the stables? the barn? 2. The last thing we saw in part four was: Crooks, alone, reading his books? Crooks, alone, rubbing his back? Crooks with some rabbits? 3. Outside, the men are playing with: the rabbits? horseshoes? cards? 4. This part of the novel takes place in: the evening? early morning? afternoon? 5. Lennie is sitting in some hay at the start of this part. He is looking at: Curley s wife? a dead puppy? the horses? 6. Curley s wife says she wants to talk to Lennie because: she gets lonely? she wants to hear Lennie s life story? she wants to buy some rabbits? 7. George told Lennie not to talk to Curley s wife because he says: she d get us in a mess? she s Curley s wife? she d never give us a fair price for rabbits? doc Page 6 of 10

8 Part six answers Answer the following questions by circling or writing in the answers. This part takes place: in the barn by the pool in the Gabilan mountains The first four paragraphs describe the setting. Compare p.98 with p.9. What are the similarities and differences between the descriptions? Similarities: It is late afternoon/late evening; the sun is setting over the mountains; there is a water snake in the pool. Differences: The heron eats the water snake on p 98. There is only a little breeze and quiet on p 9, on p 98 there is a rush of wind, gusting through the trees. Why does Steinbeck describe the snake and the heron? Steinbeck shows the differences between the beginning of the novel and now. The snake in the first description is free and alive, like Lennie. In the second description the snake is killed, which predicts Lennie s death. Look for a simile Steinbeck uses to describe Lennie on p 98: He came as silently as a creeping bear moves doc Page 8 of 10
9 Summarise here what Lennie s vision of his aunt Clara says to him: She had told Lennie to listen to what George told him, but he didn t listen and did bad things. George always took care of Lennie. If it hadn t been for Lennie, George could have had a good life. (pp ) Summarise here what Lennie s vision of the giant rabbit says to him: The rabbit says that Lennie wouldn t be able to take care of any rabbits, and warns Lennie that George will beat him with a stick for what he has done and then leave him all alone. (pp ) Steinbeck describes how the sun is setting on p 102. Why? Because he wants to show time passing Because he wants to suggest a link between the setting of the sun and Lennie s life Because Steinbeck once said, I always want a setting sun to appear in my novels it s so romantic! Note down five things George and Lennie talk about on pp ? Whether George will give Lennie hell. How George could go off to a cat house with his $50. If Lennie will go off and live in a cave. How they have each other, unlike other guys who are lonely. Their dream. Of what does the shooting of Lennie in the back of the head remind you? On which page does that incident occur? It reminds me of: Candy s dog being shot by Carlson, on p.50. What does George want Lennie to know before he kills him? that he had never been mad at him that his aunt Clara would have been proud of him that there are rabbits in heaven doc Page 9 of 10
10 Why do you think George says I gotta. We gotta on p.105? George knows that he has to shoot Lennie, or else the other men might torture and then kill him. When he says we gotta, he might mean that he and Lennie now had to part forever. Why does Curley say right in the back of the head softly on p.105? Curley is surprised that George managed to shoot Lennie so accurately. He thinks that there is something strange about how George was able to do so. The softly shows that he is thinking about it, turning it over in his mind. What does Slim say to George on p.106, and why? Slim tells George: You hadda, George. I swear you hadda. This echoes George s I gotta. Slim recognises how difficult it was for George to kill his best friend, and tries to console him by telling him that what he did was for the best. copyright John Steinbeck doc Page 10 of 10
