ENERGY STAR Overview Lighting Appliances David Shiller Marketing Manager ENERGY STAR for Residential Light Fixtures U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
What is ENERGY STAR? ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency Products must meet strict energy efficiency standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and US Department of Energy (DOE) On a voluntary basis, manufacturers submit products for qualification. If qualified, the products can be sold with the ENERGY STAR mark To date, American consumers have purchased more than 1.75 billion ENERGY STAR qualified products.
Good Housekeeping Seal Survey ENERGY STAR mark ranks among the highest level of influence on product purchase among all consumer emblems, similar in ranking to the Good Housekeeping Seal and Consumer Reports. 91% 90% 89% 88% 87% 87% 86% Tremendous Influence 85% 23% 35% 17% 31% 28% 25% 23% 24% 71% 20% 32% 36% 30% 26% GH Seal 34% 31% AHA 32% 25% FDA 28% 28% USDE Cons. 4 Customer Satisfaction ENERGY STAR qualified products contribute to customer satisfaction through: Quality: such as long life, instant on, etc. Less call backs for the contractor or builder Less returns for the distributor Savings: lower utility bills Warranties: provide customer security when trying new technologies for the first time SAVING ENERGY EQUALS SAVING MONEY ENERGY STAR qualified products use less energy and cost less to operate resulting in:
Who are ENERGY STAR Partners? More than 40 product categories Over 1,400 manufacturers labeling more than 28,000 product models: (75 for lighting and 21 for ceiling fans) Over 550 retail partners representing more than 21,000 storefronts Over 200 showroom partners promoting lighting products Over 400 electrical distributor partners selling to their contractors and builders More than 330 state and utility partners promoting ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR Qualified Residential Light Fixtures Ceiling Fans Vent Fans
ENERGY STAR Qualified Indoor Fixture Complete fixture, ballast, and bulb Less Heat = reduces air conditioning costs Less Energy = lower utility bills Excellent color rendering ( 80 CRI) = colors look natural Dedicated pin-based bulbs = longer lamp life than incandescent Electronic Ballast -- Flicker-free, no hum or buzz. Ballast must meet heat test criteria to avoid pre-mature failure. Must be easily replaceable. 2-year warranty = customer security Instant-on = customer satisfaction Laboratory verified = quality control, independent third party testing.
ENERGY STAR Qualified Outdoor Fixture Outdoor Fixtures: Automatic shut-off during daytime (photo cell) = saves energy Reduced energy use at night in one of two ways: Use of an energy-efficient bulb (CFL) = saves energy OR Use of incandescent bulb with a motion sensor = saves energy Lamp and ballast requirements similar to the indoor fixtures 2-year manufacturer warranty = customer security
ENERGY STAR Qualified Ceiling Fan Ceiling Fans (can qualify with or without lighting): Move more air, or cubic feet, per minute (CFM per watt consumed) = 20% more efficient = saves energy Less Energy = lower utility bills Additional savings through higher thermostat settings in the summer Additional savings in the winter when run in reverse to heat room Extended Warranty = customer security 30-year motor warranty 2-year light kit warranty 1-year component warranty Laboratory verified = quality control
ENERGY STAR Qualified Ventilating Fan Ventilating Fans (models can qualify with or without lighting): Move more air, or cubic feet, per minute (CFM per watt consumed) with less energy (65% less than standard models = saves energy Save energy = lower utility bills Quiet operation = customer satisfaction Lighting must meet fixture requirements = quality & savings 1-year manufacturer warranty = customer security Laboratory verified = quality control
The ENERGY STAR Advance Lighting Package (ALP)
What is the ENERGY STAR Advanced Lighting Package (ALP)? The ALP Is a marketing platform and upgrade option that features advanced residential light fixture technology that has earned the ENERGY STAR Can serve as the standard lighting package or offered as an upgrade option
ENERGY STAR Qualified Lighting is a Whole-Home Solution Pendant Mounted foyer, dining Close-to-Ceiling hallway, kitchen, bath Ceiling Fan Vanity Bathroom Recessed Living room, kitchen, hallway Outdoor yard, walkway, facade lighting
Understanding the ALP Category % ENERGY STAR Fixtures High-Use Rooms Kitchen, Dining Room, Living Room, Family Room, Bathrooms, Halls, Stairways 50% Medium-Use Rooms Bedrooms, Den, Office, Basement, Laundry Room, Garage, Closets, and all other rooms 25% Outdoor Lighting Affixed to Home, Free-standing Poles excluding landscape and solar lighting 50% Ceiling Fans [Where Provided] 100%
Understanding the ALP The percentage of ENERGY STAR fixtures refers to the total number of fixtures for a given room classification. For example: o If the total number of fixtures in the kitchen, dining room, living room, family room, all bathrooms, halls, and stairways is 18, then 9 must be ENERGY STAR. o You do not need 50% in each room nor must you use ENERGY STAR fixtures in every room. All ceiling fans that are included in the home must be ENERGY STAR qualified. ENERGY STAR qualified ventilating fans and qualified ceiling fan light kits count as a qualified fixture.
Why offer ENERGY STAR ALPs? Set yourself apart from the competition. Increase your sales and profits by upgrading to ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures and the ALP. Benefit your business, your customers, and the environment. Take advantage of existing marketing materials produced by EPA and PR efforts by ENERGY STAR manufacturing and utility partners.

ENERGY STAR ALP Summary We can do a lot better than 100-year old technology Cost Durability Comfort Environment
ENERGY STAR Qualified Appliances
WHAT ARE ENERGY STAR QUALIFIED CLOTHES WASHERS? ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers operate more energy efficiently than standard models and are designed to reduce water consumption, while at the same time causing less wear and tear on clothes due to the following features: Front loading washers Higher capacity Tumble action rather than central agitator for more gentle washing Remove more water in spin cycle Top loading washers High pressure rinse to remove soap residue High speed spin options to reduce drying time Many built without an agitator
WHAT ARE ENERGY STAR QUALIFIED DISHWASHERS? ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers are 25% more energy efficient than other models. Many models include: Internal water heaters, which allow the thermostat on the main water heater to be turned down, reducing water heating costs by an additional 10% Soil sensors, which customize the length of the cycle as needed, saving energy and water Dishwashers must have an energy factor (EF) of 0.58 or better to qualify for the ENERGY STAR symbol.
WHAT ARE ENERGY STAR QUALIFIED REFRIGERATORS? ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators use at least 15% less energy than the 2001 minimum federal standards by incorporating energyefficient features such as: Better insulation and gaskets prevent heat from entering the refrigerator Efficient compressors More precise temperature and defrost mechanisms to regulate temperature more effectively
WHICH BRANDS ARE ENERGY STAR QUALIFIED? Trusted brands like these Electrolux GE Appliances Kenmore Maytag Whirlpool
WHY BUY ENERGY STAR? Clothes Washers Tumble action rather than central agitator for more gentle washing High-speed spin options reduce drying time and energy usage Repeated high-pressure spraying for rinsing clothes instead of soaking in full tub of water Higher capacity loads with front and top-loading options ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers save $45 - $130 per year because they require less energy and less water to be heated With the yearly savings, the premium price of an ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washer is recovered in 4-5 years Dishwashers Internal water heaters that save up to 10% on water heating costs Soil sensors that adjust wash cycle based on each load ENERGY STAR qualified dishwashers save an average of $25 per year on utility bills through energy and water efficiency features Refrigerators Differentiated compartments for maintaining varied temperatures and better insulation Replacing a model manufactured before 1993 with a new ENERGY STAR qualified model will save between $20 and $55 per year on electricity bills With the yearly savings, the premium price of an ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator is recovered in 2-6 years. And, since the average lifespan of a refrigerator is 14 years, this means at least 8-12 years of direct savings
