1 HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) The Chinese Proficiency Test The Confucius Institute at Arizona State University is currently one of several testing centers available to Chinese language students in the United States. Tests are held in the ASU Tempe Campus two times a year. The test will be held in the Durham Language and Literature Building (LL), Room 61 at Arizona State University s Tempe Campus. Time will be announced soon. Please bring at least one 2HB pencil and valid student ID to the testing center to be admitted. What is the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK)? The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is a series test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers. It assesses the examinees' ability to use the Chinese language in communicative activities and understanding in the environment of studying in educational institutions, enterprises and other organizations. 2 2. Who is the host organization of HSK? The Chinese Ministry of Education established the State Committee for the Chinese Proficiency Test (SCCPT). The Committee fully supervises the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) and is the host organization inside and outside of China. All HSK tests are designed by the HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University located in Beijing, China. The Center's entire work, from making tests to issuing certificates, is supervised by the National Commission of Chinese Proficiency Test under the Ministry of Education of China. The HSK test is divided into six levels: HSK Level 1 is appropriate for beginning learners. Students who have taken two to three Chinese classes per week for one semester and have mastered approximately 150 common vocabulary and relevant grammar are suggested to take Level 1. HSK Level 2 is appropriate for beginning learners. Students who have taken two to three Chinese classes per week for two semesters and have mastered approximately 300 common vocabulary and relevant grammar are suggested to take Level 2. HSK Level 3 is appropriate for intermediate learners. Students who have taken two to three Chinese classes per week for three semesters and have mastered approximately 600 common vocabulary and relevant grammar are suggested to take Level 3. HSK Level 4 is appropriate for intermediate learners. Students who have taken two to four Chinese classes per week for four semesters and have mastered approximately 1200 common vocabulary and relevant grammar are suggested to take Level 4. HSK Level 5 is appropriate for advanced learners. Students who have taken two to four Chinese classes per week for at least four semesters and have mastered approximately 2500 common vocabulary and relevant grammar are suggested to take Level 3. Basic is appropriate for students who have Chinese for one to two semesters. Students are expected to have mastered approximately 200 common vocabularies. Intermediate is appropriate for students who have Chinese for one to two academic years. Students are expected to have mastered approximately 900 common vocabularies. Advanced is appropriate for students who have Chinese over two years. Students are expected to have mastered approximately 3000 common vocabularies. 6.
