The program, named icare, uses early-warning software and remote monitoring to provide off-site critical care physicians with information needed to assist on-site ICU staff. THE LIFE SCIENCE INDUSTRY IN ARIZONA HAS GROWN BY 45% OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS, COMPARED TO 12% NATIONALLY ADVANCING HEALTHCARE AND BIOSCIENCES In the Phoenix-Mesa metro region, the healthcare industry is a $20.5 billion industry that supports 184,272 jobs with a median wage of $58, In fact, The Life Science Industry in Arizona has grown 45% over the last 10 years, compared to a national growth rate of only 12%, according to a report prepared by Battelle Technology Partnership Practice for the Flinn Foundation. 3 Rapid population growth in Greater Phoenix has created an increased demand for healthcare services. More than 80 licensed hospitals, providing in excess of 8,000 beds, serve the region; more than 2,000 physicians, dentists, psychiatrists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and ophthalmologists attend to healthcare needs on a multistate, national and international level. The City of Mesa holds a strong healthcare and bioscience position with world-class specialty and general hospitals totaling more than 1,700 beds combined, higher education institutions focused on healthcare, and secondary education featuring training in biotech and life sciences industries. KEY ADVANCES IN HEALTHCARE AND BIOSCIENCES IN PHOENIX-MESA OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center opened a 120,000 sq. ft. comprehensive cancer center on the Mesa boundary one of only four locations in the world. In addition, a 180,000 sq. ft. expansion was completed in Banner Health opened the Banner Simulation Medical Center, a 55,000 sq. ft. virtual hospital in Mesa, is used to help train physicians and nurses. It holds the distinction of being the largest simulation center in the western U.S. and has the potential to elevate medical education efforts in Arizona to new levels. ASU s Polytechnic campus created the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) and received a $15M award from the U.S. Department of Energy for advancements in sustainable algal production. Mesa-based Ulthera, Inc. a global medical device company focused on developing and commercializing technologies for aesthetic and medical applications received the first-ever FDA clearance for non-invasive lift of skin on the neck and under the chin. The company has plans to expand to the cellulite market and recently filed an $86 million initial public offering with the SEC. A.T. Still School of Osteopathic Medicine in Mesa, opened a half-milliondollar virtual-anatomy lab to simulate everything from bones to blood vessels in 3-D the first of its kind in any Arizona medical school.
3 AREAS OF OPPORTUNITY: LEVERAGING CITY OF MESA ASSETS Economic Development priorities are guided by Mesa s industries of opportunity: Healthcare; Education; Aerospace/Aviation; Tourism/Technology. Several sites in Downtown Mesa are available for projects in, or related to, these target industries. The approved three-mile extension in Downtown Mesa will be completed in It is projected the Central Mesa extension will average 9,742 weekday riders. LaunchPoint, Mesa s first technology accelerator, opened in December 2013 as a collaborative effort between the City of Mesa and Arizona State University to drive the growth of innovative technology companies. For more than a decade, the State of Arizona has implemented reductions in taxes and created incentive programs favorable for business. Arizona s R&D Refundable Tax Credit is the most competitive in the country because it allows the taxpayer small businesses with less than 150 FTEs to receive up to a 75% refund on the value of the credit. The Income Tax Credit is for qualified R&D done in Arizona, including research conducted at a state university and funded by the company. The Small Business Capital Investment Tax Credit Program allows eligible tech-company investors a 30% credit on state taxes over a three-year period (biotech company investors can receive a 35% credit). Mesa s Foreign Trade Zone is one of the most competitive in the nation, and may reduce property taxes by 75-80% for qualifying companies activating in a Foreign Trade Zone or Subzone site.
