3 1 Executive Summary The project web page is the project s visiting card and the first destination where potential users of the project development results to find all the information on one place. Horizon 2020 Research Framework Programme 7 is a Research and Innovation programme for fostering competitiveness and growth and increasing benefits to the European Union s economy and citizens. Under its different funding schemes, the framework programme supports research and development activities resulting in new knowledge, new products and services, and also in non-technological and social innovation. It is essential that the public investment in these activities is converted into socio-economic benefits for society. Creation of the project web page is one of the communication strategy used to disseminate its activities during and beyond the project s lifetime. D7.1 Web page REDIRNET Page 2

5 2 Glossary ACCESSIBILITY Relates to web design/coding standards and refers to how easy it is for everyone to use a website. This includes people who are visually impaired or in any way physically handicapped, or limited by older or less common computers and software. These days with smaller screen-sized tablets and smartphones, accessibility for use on all devises is important; especially with the growing number of people using smaller screen devices to go online. CASCADING STYLE SHEETS Also referred to as CSS, Cascading Style Sheets are used to define the look and feel of a web site outside the actual HTML files of the site. In recent years, CSS has replaced tables and other HTML-based methods for formatting and laying out websites. There are many benefits to using CSS, but among the most important are the simplification of a site s HTML files (which can actually increase search engine ranking) and the ability to completely change the style of a site by changing just one file, without having to make changes to page content. CMS A Content Management System aids rapid site development and updating by managing its text, code, graphical and style content for the developer, generally by using an RDBMS. DOCTYPE The doctype declaration specifies which version of HTML is used in a document. It has a direct effect on whether the HTML will validate. FAVICON Favicons are tiny (generally pixels, though some are pixels), customizable icons displayed in the web address bar in most browsers next to the web address. HIT Contrary to popular belief, a hit does not represent a single visitor to a website. A hit is actually a request for a single file from a web server. This means one page usually generates multiple hits, as each page generally has more than one file (an html or other base file, a css file, multiple images, etc.) and each one is requested from the server whenever the page is loaded. Some marketing people like to quote hits to unknowing consumers as the number makes their site sound like it s getting a whole lot more traffic than it actually is. HTML Hyper Text Markup Language is the basic language in which web pages are written. JAVASCRIPT A coding language used to achieve effects and functions on websites that normal html and its variants cannot achieve. These bits of coding (scripts) are normally embedded into a web page and activate automatically as soon as someone arrives on the page. Please note that JavaScript is distinctly different from Java. JOOMLA! An open source model view controller web application framework MySQL An open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) OPTIMISE This has two possible meanings in web design. The first is website/page optimisation. This relates to how the code and content of a page is structured with regard to search engines. A well optimised website is search engine friendly. The second meaning relates to graphics and pictures that are used on websites. An optimised graphic is one that has been compressed as far as possible without sacrificing acceptable quality. This allows the image to load more quickly when someone visits a website. 6 3 Deliverable context 3.1 Purpose of deliverable Deliverable D7.1 Web page of the REDIRNET project concerns the production of the official project web page, the first destination for information about project cycles, development and research results. The deliverable explains how the page is created, and its aims and targets. Its structure, communication channels and its future development are set out. 7 4 Methodology used 4.1 Methodology The project web page is the first dissemination activity, and has the aim of giving the project external visibility. Creation of the webpages includes the task of analysing the existing web pages of similar research projects to gain insight into suitable design strategies. 4.2 Partner contributions Dissemination activities are an important part of the project. 11 5.2 REDIRNET Content Management System An official and public web site for the REDIRNET project has been developed and published, and is available at This web site will be optimized to be well-placed in Google searches so as to receive large numbers of visitors from around the world. The REDIRNET website is based on the open source Joomla! Content Management System (CMS), version This presents makes it easy to update webpages regularly, and allows the creation of a repository for documents that can be shared with end users. It also allows project partners to update the content for which they are responsible. The system is flexible, supporting modules providing many features that will be useful during the project s lifetime. The online repository contains information about the project, its objectives, expected results, work package structure, news, and consortium project supporters, together with a deliverables page, links and a contact list. Hence it is rich and is reachable by all at any time. Some of the project deliverables are public, and some of these will be promoted for download by large numbers of interested persons from around the world. As an initial contact point for both the general public and REDIRNET stakeholders, the project website presents an overview of the work being carried out by REDIRNET. The portal will also serve as a repository for all project-related documentation, including all public deliverables. Non-public documents, such as REDIRNET meeting minutes, draft position papers and draft roadmaps, can be stored in the password-protected area of the web portal. This area will be managed by the REDIRNET administrator, who will issue access rights to relevant parties. An example would be access by all project supporters to documents such as User Requirements. Figures 1 and 2 present a snapshot of the REDIRNET website, showing its sections, while Figure 3 provides a snapshot of the administrator back-end of the project website. Note that, while the Figures above are screenshots from a PC, the site is responsive: the CMS adapts its presentation automatically to the smaller screens of smartphones and tablets. One of the features already activated for the website is Google Analytics. This gives the ability to see the number of visitors to each webpage, their regions, the durations of their visits and more. While the REDIRNET webpage is the first place of contact for visitors, we have also decided to support a mix of social networks, where the latest news will be published. The links for social networks are visible on the page in the Project Social Networks section. The site s page design uses variations on red, white and light blue, paralleling the design of the logo. The design is simple but clear, with the whole webpage divided into two columns. The main column presents project news, while the right-hand column provides a place for social networks, funding information and a banner location for forthcoming events where the REDIRNET project will be presented. 12 Figure 3 A snapshot of the administrator back - end 6 Using the REDIRNET analytics tool REDIRNET website uses Google Analytics to create reports that make it easy to measure and understand engagement with the site. Customised reports to characterise visitor segments and identify important data can quickly be created. Traffic on REDIRNET site can be analysed. The figures that follow briefly describe the possibilities for using this analytics tool. More detailed analyse will be published in deliverable D7.3, Exploitation Plan. 14 7 REDIRNET Web Site Maintenance The REDIRNET web server is regularly checked for external availability. The Figures below show a web page performance test with a view of all elements (e.g. pictures) and their load time. The example uses an access point in Brussels, Belgium. 16 9 Conclusion The web pages of the REDIRNET project have a modern design and provide a connection to many social networks, giving many possibilities for accessing published information about the project s status. The analytic tool running behind the web page is helpful to for summarising data about users visiting the web page and preparing future exploitation plans in the future. This information can aid in tailoring marketing communications to make the project more attractive to the public. The REDIRNET web page is regularly updated and tested for optimal performance.
