Welcome to Bayview Secondary School General Information on Post-Secondary Pathways Planning For Grade 11 & 12 Students & Parents Alim Mondal March 2016
Diploma Requirements (O.S.S.D.) 18 Compulsory Credits + 12 Optional Credits = 30 Total Credits (110 hours each) + Successful Completion of Grade 10 Test of Reading and Writing + 40 Hours of Community Involvement
Making the Choice: Parents and students will select post-secondary options based on their future goals. Guidance is here to help. It is important that students do some honest selfassessment, matching their ability with their interests and aptitudes. A great tool to use is Career Cruising: (students sign in through their IPP account) Remember that initial decisions are not final decisions. There are many pathways to the destination of your child s dreams!
Pathways Beyond High School Apprenticeship: College Programs: University Programs:
Apprenticeship Combine paid on the job with in-class training for student wanting to work in the skills trades Apprentices receive training that enables them to start their careers as skilled workers A person who wants to become an apprentice must find an employer who wants to hire an apprentice then register with the Ministry of Training Students can do co-op placements in grade 12 which will contribute towards their hours for apprenticeship training.
Post Secondary Planning: Colleges Colleges offer: 1 year certificates 2 or 3 year diplomas 4 year bachelor s degree programs Most colleges offer joint college- university programs. Students may complete college programs and proceed on to university.
Examples of College Degree Programs: Bachelor of Applied Business: ex. Business Management Bachelor of Applied Technology ex. Aviation Technology, Photonics, Industrial Design Bachelor of Applied Information Science ex. Software Development, Systems Design Bachelor of Applied Arts ex. Animation Bachelor of Journalism graduate certificates (requires a university degree or college diploma) About 250 degree programs are available at Ontario colleges
Post Secondary Pathways Planning: College Entrance Requirements O.S.S.D. including - grade 12 English or mature student status (19 years old) Degree programs require 6 specific grade 12 U or M courses with a specific average Some programs require math ex. Business programs Science and Technology programs may require the grade 12 Tech. math (MCT4C1) and some science courses, ex. biology and chemistry some programs have additional non-academic criteria, such as portfolios, auditions, admission tests or First Aid/CPR
Post Secondary Planning: College Costs College tuition fees are usually between $2000 $3000 per year for diploma programs Bachelor degree program fees are usually between $ $6000 per year Some specialized programs, ie. the dental hygienist program, can cost up to $ per year for tuition alone. Books, supplies and other fees may cost an additional $650 - $1000 College residence cost about $6000, not including meals
College Timelines Applications can be submitted starting in November, with the deadline of February 1. Students can apply to five programs. No more than three at the same college. The application fee is $95. Students get responses to their application between February and April. There is an Ontario College Info the Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place, in October.
Post Secondary Planning: Universities offer: University 4 year bachelor s degree programs Example: B.A, B.Sc., BBA, B Comm. Graduate degree programs (master s and doctorate).
Post Secondary Planning Pathways: University Entrance Requirements Six grade 12 U or M courses including English (ENG4U) Each program will have additional specific subject requirements, ex. business programs may require one or two grade 12 U math courses (ex. MHF4U & MCV4U) Science and engineering programs also require science courses such as chemistry and physics or biology. Admission averages vary depending on the program and school. Generally admission averages range from the high-70s to the mid-90s. Students who have been in Canada less than 4 years may need to write a language proficiency test, ex. TOEFL or IELTS
Post Secondary Pathways Planning: University Entrance Requirements More competitive programs have additional nonacademic criteria, such as supplementary application forms, portfolios and auditions. In some cases, these criteria are considered equally with marks to determine admission. Full Disclosure: high schools must report all grade 11 and 12 courses done at the school and all attempts. Universities look only at the courses they require and do not penalize students for other grades on the transcript. In a few competitive programs, universities look only at the first attempt at a course. In other cases, universities have alternative methods of evaluating a repeated course.
Post Secondary Planning: University Application Costs A common application is done for all programs in Ontario through OUAC. The application fee is $150, and includes three program choices. Each additional program costs $50. Students may apply to three programs at any one university. However, students are strongly encouraged to apply to a range of universities and programs.
Post Secondary Planning University Costs Typically, university tuition costs are between $ $ per year for regular programs. Typical commerce and engineering fees range from $ $ Residence fees up to $13 000, depending on the school and whether a meal plan is included. Books and other incidental fees add another $1 500 to $2 500 per year.
