4 Technology Extensions for EMC Storage Product Guide Introduction Introduction This document provides an overview of the VCE Technology Extensions for EMC storage. It also provides the information required for planning the installation of the VCE Technology Extensions. The target audience for this document includes build teams, deployment and installation personnel, sales engineers, field consultants, and advanced services specialists. VCE Technology Extensions for EMC storage have a number of features including: Standardized VCE cabinets, with multiple North American and international power solutions, for the EMC XtremIO and EMC VNX arrays Standardized EMC cabinets for the EMC VMAX3 arrays Block (SAN) and unified storage options (SAN and NAS) Support for multiple features of the EMC operating environment Segregated network architecture that provides the option to leverage Cisco Nexus switches to support IP and Cisco MDS switches to support SAN Each VCE Technology Extension contains the following key hardware and software components: Resource Components Storage EMC VNX8000 EMC VNX7600 EMC VNX5800 EMC VNX5600 EMC VNX5400 EMC XtremIO 40 TB - 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8 EMC X-Bricks EMC XtremIO 20 TB - 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8 EMC X-Bricks EMC XtremIO 10TB (encryption capable) - 1, 2, or 4 EMC X-Bricks EMC VMAX 400K EMC VMAX 200K EMC VMAX 100K Note: The EMC VNX storage arrays use the EMC VNX operating environment. The VCE Release Certification Matrix provides a list of the certified versions of components for the VCE System and the VCE Technology Extensions. VCE Technology Extensions deployment VCE Technology Extensions are deployed with new or existing VCE Systems, in various configurations. 6

Managed by EMC Unisphere for VMAX3 or EMC Solutions Enabler EMC Unisphere for VMAX3 manages multiple EMC VMAX3 storage arrays EMC Solutions Enabler VCE Technology Extensions connectivity To connect a VCE Technology Extension to a VCE System, use the same procedures as described in the documentation for the host VCE System. 7

8 Technology Extensions for EMC Storage Product Guide Understanding the architecture VCE Technology Extension for EMC VMAX3 storage Each VCE Technology Extension for EMC VMAX3 storage has between one to eight engines that provide Fibre Channel (FC) connectivity. The following table shows the number of FC ports per fabric, for each engine: Number of engines FC ports per fabric (two SLICs per director) FC ports per fabric (four SLICs per director) For more information about a VCE Technology Extension for EMC VMAX3 storage, refer to the VCE Vblock and VxBlock Systems 740 Architecture Overview. VCE Technology Extension for EMC VNX storage Each VCE Technology Extension has 6 to 14 FC ports per fabric. Block storage arrays Follows the same configuration options as the Vblock System 340 or VxBlock System 340. Unified storage arrays Requires 10 GB fiber optic cables to connect the data movers. 8

VCE Technology Extension for EMC XtremIO storage EMC XtremIO arrays contain one, two, four, six, or eight EMC X-Bricks per cluster. Each EMC X-Brick has four 8 GB FC ports. Two of the FC ports connect an EMC X-Brick to each fabric. 10 Technology Extensions for EMC Storage Product Guide Planning the physical installation Planning the physical installation Cabinet information VCE Technology Extensions for EMC storage are deployed in either VCE Intelligent Physical Infrastructure (IPI) cabinets or EMC VMAX cabinets. VCE Technology Extension for EMC VMAX3 storage VCE Technology Extensions for EMC VMAX3 storage are deployed in standard EMC VMAX3 cabinets. VCE Technology Extension for EMC XtremIO storage VCE Technology Extensions for EMC XtremIO storage are deployed in dedicated VCE IPI cabinets and follow the standard VCE System build procedures for placement of the following components: EMC X-Bricks EMC XtremIO InfiniBand Switches Standby power supply (SPS) switch VCE Technology Extension for EMC VNX storage VCE Technology Extensions for EMC VNX storage are deployed in VCE IPI cabinets and follow standard VCE System build procedures for EMC disk-array enclosure (DAE) interleaving and EMC Data Mover enclosure (DME) placement. Additional arrays are built in separate VCE IPI cabinets. Cabinet specifications Cabinet specifications and weight information are provided to effectively plan for VCE System installation. VCE cabinets are configured with an Intelligent Physical Infrastructure (IPI) appliance. The IPI appliance incorporates door thermal sensors, door handle sensors, HID security door handles, and intelligent power distribution units (PDUs). The PDUs enable remote monitoring capabilities of each VCE cabinet as well as outlet-level control for each PDU. For more information about the IPI appliance, refer to the administration guide for your VCE System and to the VCE Intelligent Physical Infrastructure Appliance User Manual. VCE recommends placing cabinets in a contiguous row when possible. This ensures that standard crosscabinet cabling can be used and minimizes the number of required side panels. Non-contiguous cabinet layouts may require custom cable lengths that result in longer product lead times. For installations that require a top of the cabinet power feed, a three meter extension cord is provided. The pallets used to ship VCE cabinets are specifically engineered to withstand the added weight of components shipped in the cabinet. Base cabinet dimensions The following illustration shows the base cabinet dimensions: Note: The VCE cabinet height including the casters is 6 feet 8 in. (2,026 mm). The illustration shows the height without the casters. 11

(2,178 mm) The cabinet weight does not include the 1RU, 20 lb (9.07 kg) support shelf that might be required to support an EMC XtremIO controller. Not all controllers in a cabinet require a support shelf. A maximum of two support shelves might be required, depending on the EMC X-Brick configuration. Note: The standard cabinet is black. White cabinets can be special ordered with extended lead times. Cabinet floor cutouts Cabinet floor cutouts provide floor specifications that are required before installing a VCE System. The standard configuration floor layout is 28 in. (700 mm) wide x 48 in. (1,200 mm) deep. The floor mounting positions are used when casters or levelers are used (using anti-tip brackets). Equipment rail spacing is factory set. 12
