4 Introduction Faced with the option to use public cloud computing services or to build their own private clouds, enterprises are increasingly choosing to do both. The result is a growth in the deployment of hybrid cloud solutions. VCE Vblock Systems are pre-integrated, pre-configured, pre-tested units of cloud infrastructure that combine EMC storage, Cisco servers and networking, and VMware virtualization technology to provide an ideal cloud solution. Cisco Intercloud Fabric is a software solution that enables customers to manage and access their workloads across multiple public clouds. This gives customers choice and flexibility to place workloads where they are of most benefit according to technical and business needs. Leveraging Vblock Systems with Cisco Intercloud Fabric provides the capability to move workloads into service provider clouds and to bring workloads back into the customers' private clouds and on-premises infrastructure. Purpose This document demonstrates how Vblock Systems with Cisco Intercloud Fabric can be leveraged to choose what networks can be securely extended to a public cloud, and consistent network configuration and security policies can be enforced throughout the hybrid cloud. Intercloud Fabric mechanism is used for enforcing security and goes beyond the secure tunnel between Vblock Systems and public clouds. This security extends all the way to the virtual machines (VMs) running in the cloud, so the communication between these VMs in the cloud is also secure. Audience This document is intended for enterprise customers and IT decision makers who want to transparently extend their Vblock Systems environments (private clouds) into public cloud environments, while keeping the same level of security and policy across environments. 4
5 Vblock Systems with Cisco Intercloud Fabric Vblock Systems are pre-engineered and validated units that streamline IT infrastructure acquisition, deployment, and operations. Vblock Systems can dramatically simplify IT operations accelerating IT deployment while reducing costs and improving service levels for all workloads, including the most demanding and mission critical enterprise applications. Implementing Cisco Intercloud Fabric with Vblock Systems allows flexibility when selecting a cloud provider, including the ecosystem of Cisco powered cloud providers or the hyper scale public clouds such as Amazon Web Service and Microsoft Azure. A scenario with multiple choices of hypervisors on and off premises can make workload mobility and portability difficult. Integrating Vblock Systems with Cisco Intercloud Fabric resolves this problem and allows workloads to be moved to multiple clouds and back to the enterprise. Figure 1. 6 Integrating Vblock Systems with Cisco Intercloud Fabric Integrating Vblock Systems with Cisco Intercloud Fabric allows the management of workloads, security policies, and network extension to the cloud, and includes northbound API (Application Program Interface) capabilities to allow integration with existing private cloud management solutions. The integration of Vblock Systems and Cisco Intercloud Fabric provides the following: Unified management leverage a single pane of glass for Vblock Systems and public cloud workloads with same management experience and tools. The unified management approach allows: Choice of cloud providers, through access to an expanding ecosystem of Cisco Intercloud Fabric enabled cloud providers. A single management stack for Vblock Systems resource management and application stacks and cloud environments. Workload mobility and portability Benefits of Cisco Intercloud Fabric With Cisco Intercloud Fabric, your business can build highly secure hybrid clouds and extend your existing data center to public clouds as needed, on demand, and with consistent network and security policies. Cisco Intercloud Fabric provides a more flexible response to business needs and addresses the potential challenges of hybrid clouds through the following features: Workload security throughout the resulting hybrid clouds. Consistent operations and workload portability across clouds. Delivery of unified hybrid cloud management for end users and IT administrators, enabling workload mobility to and from service provider clouds for physical and virtual workloads. 7 Vblock Systems and Cisco Intercloud Fabric architectural details The solution consists of: Vblock Systems Cisco Intercloud Fabric for Business includes Intercloud Fabric Director and Intercloud Fabric Secure Extender. Intercloud Fabric for Providers installed and managed by service providers, part of an expanding Cisco Intercloud Fabric ecosystem. Figure 2. Vblock Systems with Cisco Intercloud architectural details Additional infrastructure VMs can be deployed as part of the Vblock Management stack. Intercloud Fabric Director provides a portal for IT administrators and end-users. IT administrators can create and publish a catalog of corporate approved VMs, which can be deployed on either the Vblock System or a public cloud. Intercloud Fabric Secure Extender provides IT administrators the choice to select what networks can be securely extended to the public cloud. Consistent network configuration and security policies can be enforced throughout the hybrid cloud. 7
8 Conclusion Vblock Systems with Cisco Intercloud Fabric is intended for enterprise customers who want to transparently extend their private clouds into public cloud environments while keeping the same level of security and policy across environments. Enterprises can connect on-premises data center infrastructure to multiple service providers and take advantage of flexible, pay-as-you-grow capacity. Ultimately this leads to lower costs and faster delivery of resources.
