2 BA (Honours) INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS Why study International Business at Strathclyde? International business is all around us, in everything from the music we hear to the technology we use. More and more business careers, especially the more successful ones, are international business careers, and nearly all now involve international dimensions. UK firms large and small are winning internationally. Graduates who have a knowledge of international business and the experience and maturity that comes from having studied overseas are in demand. The BA in International Business is an innovative and dynamic degree programme. It is unique in the ways in which it develops: specialist knowledge of international business and management knowledge of other aspects of management and the skills and abilities to be an effective manager of the future Building your Understanding of International Business You will develop your understanding of International Business on a carefully tailored specialist programme over the four years of your Honours degree (or unusually, three years of the BA degree). Years 1 & 2 From Foundations of Management and International Business in Year 1 you will progress to International Business Analysis in Year 2. You also choose two other business subjects from the list opposite and an elective (from a wide range across the University).

3 one-to-one guidance by a supervisor, will enable you to undertake a focused piece of research in the area of International Business, while demonstrating to potential employers, well developed analytical and research skills. Broadening your Knowledge of Management The flexibility of the International Business degree enables you to study other subjects in the Business School. This means that you can pursue your particular interests for a more varied experience. It also means that you will develop the breadth of knowledge that employers look for in graduates. Aside from International Business you can choose subjects in a wide range of other areas. You will have the advice and guidance of the Adviser of Studies to help you with your choice. Business subjects include: Year 3 In your third year, you not only study International Business, you experience it. You will spend at least one semester studying at a top partner institution (in North America, South East Asis, Australia, New Zealand or another European country) studying in English. The topics you study while abroad will reflect the host institution s own international business specialisations, as well as your own particular interests. Year 4 (Honours) You will study classes in your business subject and in International Business. 4 Developing your Skills and Abilities In Years 1 to 3, you will take part in the Business School s Management Development Programme (see separate leaflet). The programme enhances the breadth of your business knowledge and develops key skills which will be recognised by your future employers. The experience of studying overseas will develop your life skills in ways that will be instantly recognised at job interviews. The dissertation project will demonstrate your ability to start an innovative project and see it through to a high quality report. Frequently Asked Questions Q How do I pick classes and how do I get information about them? A At the beginning of first year there will be a week of studies that introduces you to the different subjects in the Business School. Only after this will you pick your classes you can meet with an adviser of studies to discuss your interests and career aspirations and help you to pick the best curriculum. At the first lecture of each class, you will be given a handout with details of lectures, tutorials, staff involved with the course and details of textbooks. Q How many hours a week will I have classes? A For each subject, you will have between two and four hours of classes each week, comprising lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. For tutorials, seminars or workshops you might prepare a topic for discussion or present the results of a project to your group. In others, you might revise lecture topics or explore case studies. Q How large are the classes? A There might be in a tutorial class, in a seminar or workshop, and up to 500 in a lecture. Q How is my work assessed? A Assessment includes case studies, presentations, essays, projects, and written and oral exams. Most final marks include coursework and a final exam mark. In some first-year classes, very good coursework results can lead to exemption from the final exam. Most first-year classes involve one or two pieces of coursework per semester. The Management Development Programme is assessed solely on coursework, with no final exam. Teaching and Assessment Teaching includes lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Assessment varies from class to class but included case study work, presentations, written and oral exams, essays, projects and the Honours research dissertation. Guest lectures from industry and our international partners are a feature throughout the programme.

This experience not only developed my knowledge, understanding and critical thinking about business through a new cultural lens, it also enriched my communication skills and confidence.
