2 BA (Honours) HOSPITALITY and TOURISM MANAGEMENT Why study Hospitality and Tourism Management? The global hospitality and tourism industry and its broader economic impacts currently represent approximately US$6 trillion or nine per cent of the global economy, employing well over a quarter of a billion people. A myriad of issues and challenges surround this dynamic industry where service provision and innovation sit at the heart of success. Even more challenging is administering competitive value propositions with global scope while engaging with countless complementary and supplementary markets such as technology and manufacturing. Future leaders with vision and the right skills are needed if the industry is to respond to opportunity and continue to grow. As well as the undergraduate degree we also run the MSc in International Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Executive Masters in Hospitality and Tourism Leadership with additional content from the Cornell School of Hotel Administration in Ithaca, New York and École hôtelière de Lausanne, Switzerland. Studying Hospitality and Tourism Management at Strathclyde will equip you with the skills necessary to manage such diverse operations as hotels, resorts, cruise ships, airlines, tour operators, destination management, exhibition and conference operations, outdoor centres, schools, and hospitals. We have more than 8000 graduates operating in all these fields, thanks to our 65 years experience of providing both the theoretical background and a wealth of practical opportunities to investigate the sector. Degree Structure The duration of the BA single or joint Honours degree is four years. All students are admitted as potential Honours students. Students may exit with a BA degree at the end of Year 3 if they have achieved the required standard. Year 1 is a broad-based foundation course in which you choose a number of basic classes in business and other disciplines alongside the Business School s Management Development Programme (see separate leaflet).

3 Year 1 Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism in this big picture class, you ll learn how business, culture and ecology interrelate through the lens of Hospitality and Tourism. You ll place the industry in historical and philosophical context, understand it as the ultimate form of globalised commerce and grapple with ethical issues related to its cultural and environmental impacts. Year 2 Service Encounter Management in the hospitality and tourism sector much of the customer engagement and value delivery takes place within the service encounter. In this class you will learn how the management of this dynamic environment requires an integrated approach where customers, employees and the service setting itself require to be managed. You will receive advice at both degree level and subject level on which classes you should choose, based on your individual interests and strengths. At the start of Year 2, you select two of your first-year subjects to study in more depth during Years 2 and 3, alongside a third minor subject. Years 2 and 3 will also include further classes in the Management Development programme. For admission to the final year of the Honours course, a student must have qualified for the BA degree and achieved an approved standard of performance. Hospitality and Tourism can be taken as a Principal Subject combination along with any other Business subject, to single or joint Honours. Destination Positioning and Management you ll explore challenges in managing and marketing destinations across organisational and product boundaries using a range of industry contexts. In an applied project, working with international students, you ll ask why Strathclyde, Glasgow and Scotland? Year 3 You will have the chance to apply theoretical knowledge to real industry contexts, including running an event for charity. You will also have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge to industry directly through placement in one of Scotland s many exciting and innovative businesses.

4 By the end of this year all students will have gained sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge to make a useful contribution to organisations within any service-based industry. Classes include: Hospitality and Tourism Management Field Class you ll travel to Majorca or a similar mature mass tourism destination with a well-established market. Designing your own research itinerary, you ll work with staff and classmates to undertake a destination audit, exploring how the destination is repositioning for changing consumer markets. Events Management as part of this class you will plan and execute a corporate, sports, entertainment, or charitable event. Industry Placement you have the opportunity to gain experience working with industry professionals, to develop practical skills and reflective practice and to build networks for possible future employment. You will reflect upon and evaluate, not only your own performance, but also the organisation, its output or key activities, and broader social, cultural and economic role. Hospitality and Tourism Analysis: Case Studies and Case Histories a capstone class which applies prior learning in three case studies. Helping to develop research skills, this class will provide the opportunity for you to develop an applied understanding of theory in a variety of contexts. You can also choose from: Management, Enterprise and the Rise of the Global Economy Strategy and Leadership Being an Ethical Manager Family Business: Theory and Practice Teaching and Assessment All classes within the degree use a mixture of coursework (essays and projects) and exams to assess student learning. You will be required to work on your own, but also as part of a team doing group presentations and reports or projects. Some classes offer exemptions from the final examinations for students achieving high marks in coursework and tutorials. Year 4 Working independently and under the guidance of a supervisor you undertake a dissertation on a hospitality and tourism topic of your choice. This will build on the knowledge and experience you have gained and allow you to explore one aspect of hospitality and tourism in greater depth.

5 I have taken part in projects in France, Dubai and Miami. I was awarded a scholarship which enabled me to undertake a work placement in Germany in third year and in my final year I received the Rolls-Royce Bright Future prize. I came from Germany to study at Strathclyde and it has provided a great learning experience. 6 Careers Graduates who have specialised in Hospitality and Tourism Management have a combination of practical and business skills with a strong focus on understanding and meeting the needs of consumers. The course is internationally focused to mirror the industry. Recent graduates have been recruited into the hotel industry and the service sector with job titles such as graduate trainee, manager, restaurant supervisor and trainee accountant.
