3 summer program associate development For me, Gibson Dunn s office was an easy choice excellent lawyers, exciting work, and the thrill of practicing in one of the world s most beautiful cities. The reality has more than lived up to the expectation. I have learned a tremendous amount from colleagues who take the time to see to my professional development. AMANDA ROSE Litigation Associate, Summer Associate 00 and 01, Summer Coordinator 06, Gibson Dunn s summer associates are able to work in any or all of our practice areas during the summer. Summer associates are assigned real client work, typical of the work performed by our first- and second-year associates, with real-time relevance and deadlines. We provide mock trial and negotiation programs, practice area overviews, legal writing seminars, and nuts and bolts training programs, in addition to court hearings, oral arguments, and client meetings all aimed at providing our summer associates with a first-hand look at our practice. Summer associates are assigned partner and associate mentors to provide guidance throughout the summer. Social events are planned throughout the summer to provide summer associates an opportunity to get to know our partners and associates on a personal level. Social events in the last couple of years have included: a weekend backpacking trip to Yosemite, a weekend of cycling and wine tasting in Napa Valley, whitewater rafting on the American River, hiking, baseball games, golf, cooking classes, concerts, theatre, and many more informal social gatherings. The and Palo Alto summer programs are integrated on all levels, with video-conferenced presentations, joint social events, and cross-office work assignments. The 2005 American Lawyer Summer Associate Survey ranked Gibson Dunn s summer program 3rd overall in the United States. The 2005 and 2004 American Lawyer Mid-Level Associate Survey ranked Gibson Dunn s office #1 in the Bay Area in terms of associate satisfaction. Unlike other similarly-sized firms, Gibson Dunn does not assign its associates to a particular partner, practice area, or client service group. Instead our free market system encourages associates to identify and seek out work of interest to them and build their own unique practices. New associates in are encouraged to explore any and all of our practice areas during their first two years at the firm as unassigned associates. Our lawyers are part of a national and international framework that emphasizes collaboration between offices to bring the best expertise and innovative thinking to bear on our client matters. The low partner-to-associate ratio in our office allows junior associates to assume greater responsibility early in their careers. In the last year alone the Bay Area offices conducted over 30 in-house litigation and corporate training programs. New associates are assigned mentors to give them guidance during their early years. Our associates have many opportunities for legal scholarship, including authoring articles for trade publications and chapters in books, and they are encouraged to become involved in local bar and professional associations.

ETHAN DETTMER Litigation Associate, Summer Associate 98, Summer Coordinator 02, Gibson Dunn s lawyers handle all aspects of corporate law, including corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, hostile takeovers, strategic investments, securities offerings, venture capital finance, insolvency, and real estate finance. Gibson Dunn ranked 7th among U.S. law firms in 2005 for announced M&A transactions, and our Bay Area lawyers were significant contributors to the firm s success in that area. Our most recent transactions include our representation of PeopleSoft in its $1.75 billion acquisition of J.D. Edwards & Co. and in its tender defense against, and eventual $10 billion merger with, Oracle; of Intel Corporation's $1.6 billion convertible debenture offering; and of Ask Jeeves in its $1.9 billion sale to IAC/InterActiveCorp. 5 pro bono I started in Gibson Dunn s London office where I worked on cross-border corporate transactions. I transferred to the office a few years ago to broaden my work experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of female attorneys in the office who were also parents. As a mother of two and a full-time associate, I feel like I have found a place where I can balance interesting and challenging work with a healthy family life. The firm is a major sponsor of, and our lawyers are active participants in, such local legal aid organizations as the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, Legal Aid Society of, Bar Association of Volunteer Legal Services Program, and Northern District of California Pro Bono Project. Gibson Dunn is also a major sponsor of a number of organizations committed to protecting and promoting civil rights, including Equal Rights Advocates, Lambda Legal, and the Anti-Defamation League. In addition to providing financial support, we engage in numerous pro bono representations that link us to our communities as well as provide excellent training for our associates. Our Bay Area attorneys logged over 9,000 pro bono hours in the last three years. We have handled prisoners rights lawsuits, immigration and asylum cases, landlord/tenant disputes, legal guardianship matters, contract disputes, financial workouts, consumer issues, employment disputes, and corporate matters in connection with a number of local legal aid organizations. We have also led workshops on contract law and real estate issues for non-profit organizations to help those organizations remain legally and fiscally fit. Gibson Dunn has received the California State Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award in the Northern California law firm category. The firm also was selected as a Pro Bono Honoree in 2005 and 2004 by the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County for the firm s commitment to the lowincome residents of San Mateo County. Individual attorneys in the Bay Area have also received pro bono awards, including the Bar Association of Award of Merit, the California State Bar s Wiley W. Manuel Award for Pro Bono Legal Services, the Bar Association of San Francisco s Awards for Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service, and the San Mateo Legal Aid Society s Guardian of Justice Award. Gibson Dunn is a signatory to the Pro Bono Institute s Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, at a commitment level of 60 pro bono hours per lawyer per year. In addition to working on the firm s existing pro bono cases, summer associates are given an opportunity to participate in the Summer Associates in Public Service Program sponsored by the Bar Association of. Through this program, summer associates staff the Homeless Advocacy Project s legal services clinic and take on cases during the summer, under the supervision of a partner and a senior associate.
