2 Kramer Levin s summer program provides an exciting and hands-on experience that prepares law students for associate life at the firm. Arielle Warshall-Katz Associate, Litigation Department inside our approach We Build Well-Rounded Lawyers. Summer associates are afforded the opportunity to work in any area they choose. Our Summer Program does not involve mandatory rotations or required assignments. work assignments Summer associates are neither assigned to a specific department nor given a mandatory rotation schedule during the Summer Program. Instead, a mid-level associate acts as the assigning attorney and distributes work according to summer associate departmental interests and availability, hopefully giving each summer associate the opportunity to work in as many different areas of practice as possible throughout the summer. If a summer associate has a specific area of interest and wants to work exclusively for that department, that request will be granted as long as there is sufficient work to keep the summer associate busy throughout the summer. Opportunities such as pro bono and shadowing are also available throughout the summer. shadowing program Through the course of the summer, we try to ensure that summer associates have an opportunity to shadow attorneys with the hope that the summer associate will learn, by observation and participation, what the practice of law is really like. Some examples of shadowing opportunities include attending strategy conferences, drafting sessions, depositions, closings, court appearances, conference calls, and client development meetings. Our shadowing program is not just available to the summer associates. We believe shadowing is also integral to the development of young full-time associates, as it provides the opportunity to continue to learn by observation and allows them to take on substantive assignments and work directly with partners.

We encourage all summer associates and attorneys to get involved in various types of pro bono work and make an effort to cater the assignments to your interests. Training programs are organized to prepare you to contribute immediately. pro bono Pro bono and community service activities can be built into your career at Kramer Levin from the very beginning. We offer summer associates the opportunity to do frontline pro bono work; and associates at all levels are accorded remarkable freedom to pursue and initiate projects of personal interest to them, including both pro bono legal work and community service activities, such as high school mentoring programs. Pro bono and community service activities are an important part of the firm s practice. We routinely rank highly among New York firms in the annual Am Law 100 and 200 Pro Bono surveys. We have won numerous pro bono awards, including the 2007 John Minor Wisdom Public Service and Professionalism Award, the 2006 National Law Journal Pro Bono Award, and the Legal Aid Society s Exceptional Pro Bono Publico and Public Service Law Firm Award for Our lawyers are encouraged to pursue the pro bono work most meaningful to them, and thus have broad involvement in such areas as political asylum, First Amendment issues, civil rights, Social Security disability, housing and homelessness, divorce and child custody, criminal trials and appeals, service to nonprofit groups, and more. We have brought class actions for homeless children with asthma, hospitalized newborns and infants, and children seeking SSI disability benefits, and we have filed amicus briefs in many important civil rights and civil liberties cases, including Lawrence v. Texas. We were co-counsel in Hernandez v. Robles, which sought equal marriage rights for same-sex couples under the New York Constitution, and League of Women Voters v. Cobb, which struck down Florida s burdensome voter registration law. Through our Associate Service Program, associates staff a full-time position at South Brooklyn Legal Services representing low-income tenants in Housing Court.

5 inside our size Mentoring and feedback Our firm is large enough for premier work and to be considered a come large firm, yet small enough to have people who genuinely care about associate development. Our summer associate class size allows for maximum exposure and opportunities, along with a diverse sampling of law students. client base We stress quality in everything we do and are widely recognized for this. We provide two formal, constructive evaluations in addition to continual feedback throughout the summer. During our summer program, a partner member of the Recruiting Committee will meet with each summer associate for a mid-summer and a final evaluation. We provide substantive, helpful feedback and aim to learn more about our summer associate s goals. Jeremy Cohen Associate, Litigation Department training A variety of training and departmental information lunches are held throughout the summer. These include: n Full week orientation (including both substantive presentations and informal talks covering legal and career issues) n Departmental overview breakfasts n Legal writing seminar n Best Practices for a Summer Associate panel n Corporate closing session n Litigation due diligence session n Navigating the courts tour mentoring Each summer associate is assigned a partner mentor and an associate buddy. These individuals are available to help with firm integration, assignment feedback and career advice and support. Partner mentors deliver evaluations and check in regularly. Associate mentors and buddies are available for more informal mentoring relationships or just to hang out. For our associates, each department has a different mentoring program (depending on the size of the department). At a minimum, each associate has a partner mentor who delivers an evaluation and provides feedback on a regular basis. Most departments ensure that each associate has both a partner and an associate mentor or buddy. Our culture is one that fosters many informal mentoring relationships.
