1 Expository Narrative Paragraph Summary Writing Genre Expository Summary An expository summary gives the most important ideas and details from a reading. Read Harry Romer s summary of The Emotion Doctor. Introduction An introductory statement states the title, author, and text type that will be summarized. 1. UnDERLINE the introduction. A topic sentence includes a general controlling idea about the text being summarized. 2. Box the topic sentence. Detail Sentences Detail sentences give important details about the summarized text. 3. check three important details. Transition words and phrases connect ideas in the paragraph. 4. three transition words or phrases. Concluding Sentence The concluding sentence restates the topic and controlling idea. 5. STAR the sentence that restates the topic and controlling idea. Student An Expert s Study of Happiness by Harry Romer In the profile The Emotion Doctor, writer Nate Kahn describes Dr. Nancy Etcoff s research on happiness. Etcoff has studied many aspects of human happiness. She believes that seeking happiness is natural to humans. For example, relationships made early people happy, so they formed communities, which are needed for survival. Another of Etcoff s ideas is that we are happiest when we are pursuing goals. For example, humans are happiest when they have just enough money, not extra money. An additional point she makes is that negative emotions, such as fear, can come out in situations where they aren t needed, like starting a new school. To be happy, we need to control these feelings.
