If you drop off or pick up your child(ren) with your vehicle, please choose a meeting place other than the parking lot! The District dress code prohibits the following: Clothing that is offensive, discriminatory, suggestive, violent, gory or has inappropriate language or graphics; Clothing the promotes alcohol or drug abuse; Clothing that reveals undergarments; exposes the midriff, breasts, buttocks; Wet or dirty footwear is not permitted to be worn in the school. As you visit the school, we ask that you set a positive example for all students by following these guidelines. issue and we need the cooperation of all parents and guardians that visit our school. Please be advised that we will NOT interrupt classes except in the case of an emergency for someone to talk to a student. Parental involvement in their child s education has proven to be one of the most significant factors in student achievement and success at school. Parent volunteers are a very valuable asset to our school and are actively invited to become involved on a regular basis. If you have time to invest and are interested in assisting in your child s education, please contact the school at It is the school district s policy that volunteers register at the office and complete the proper documentation before volunteering in the school. We hope you can appreciate that this is for the protection of your children. Forms are available at the office. We value your assistance. TECHNOLOGY: PHONE! CELLPHONE USE We have one phone available for student use and only wish for it to be used in an emergency situation! Please make sure your child is clear as to what is happening at the end of the school day to minimize the number of students asking to use the phone. Cellphones must be given to the teacher at the beginning of the day and can be picked up at the end of the school day. If a student does not comply with and is using their cellphone inappropriately it will be confiscated for the remainder of the day. If you need to make contact with your child please call the office and we will get the message to your child. 4 LABELLING FOOTWEAR AND PERSONAL ITEMS It is important that parents make sure their childs footwear, clothing and all other personal belongings are clearly marked in some way, making it possible to locate them if they are lost or misplaced. Parents are asked to ensure that students leave valuable items at home. The school cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items. Lost and found items can be located in the area in front of the gym, parents are encouraged to check this regularly. Please note that unclaimed articles are donated to charity INTERNET POLICY Avondale students have access to the internet to fulfill curricular requirements such as conducting research, accessing information and enhancing learning opportunities. Students are expected to comply with instructions they are given by the teachers regarding the types of sites and information they are allowed to access. Where teachers will provide instructions designed to maintain a positive and productive use of information technology, it is the students responsibility not to initiate access to inappropriate material and to leave unsolicited sites that are inappropriate or have inappropriate information immediately. Where the school district will utilize site filters to diminish the possibility of unsolicited materials that are not suitable for our students, parents are ultimately responsible for informing the school should they have concerns or should they not want the child to use the internet at school. Students who use the internet inappropriately or who do not comply with the instructions they are given by their teacher regarding such use will be addresses and may be denied further use of the internet at school. All students in grades 4-6 and their parents are required to accept this policy with their signatures on a separate consent form before access to computers will be given. TOYS / ELECTRONICS During each school year we struggle to keep up with the latest gadgets hitting the market and ending up at school. These items should not be brought to school as they are subject to getting lost, stolen or broken. The school cannot be held responsible for any items that are lost, stolen or broken. SCHOOL COMMUNITY TEAM In cooperation with Alberta Child & Family Services and Alberta Mental Health, Avondale School will again participate in this project, providing guidance and pro active support for students, parents and families. The Avondale School Team meets once a month. Access to the TEAM can be obtained through the school office or through the classroom teacher. AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Children are expected to go home immediately after school unless involved in a school supervised activity. Both students and teachers are responsible for informing parents if the student will be staying longer than 3:30 p.m. LOST LIBRY BOOKS Students will be responsible for any lost library books they have signed out. If after a thorough search, the book has not been found, the parents will be asked to pay the replacement cost of the book. A receipt for the lost book is provided to parents and, should the book be found at a later date, the money will be refunded.
5 SALES WITHIN THE SCHOOL Occasionally items such as books, school pins, school clothing or student portraits are sold within the school. Purchases are at parents discretion. TRANSFERRING OUT Parents should inform the school in advance, as soon as possible if their child is transferring out of our school. This will facilitate the completion of the necessary transfer documents. Also please check with the library to make sure there are no outstanding loans. PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY At Avondale we are very proud to be a Professional Learning Community. In a learning community, learning is at the forefront of everything that we do. All staff is encouraged to be lifelong learners as research supports that school improvement means people improvement. In our community we approach learning with the basic philosophy that all children can learn and that we will do whatever we can to enhance that learning. Collaboration is key to the success of a learning community and at Avondale the timetable supports teachers teaching and working together. The three guiding questions that guide teachers during their collaborative time are: V What is it that we expect students to learn? (Curriculum) Teachers closely examine the provincially mandated curriculum looking for any overlap in order to focus on the school goals of literacy and numeracy. V How will we know they ve learned it? (Assessment) After key concepts have been taught, teachers are expected to assess the learning of their students. Teachers are enhancing their own assessments and utilizing standardized assessments to monitor learning. V What will I do if they haven t learned? (Intervention) This is probably the most significant difference between a traditional school and a professional learning community. If an assessment shows that there are students who have NOT learned the important concepts identified during the curriculum phase of this process, intervention strategies are employed to assist all students to attain mastery. STUDENT ASSESSMENT Students are evaluated on a regular and continuing basis throughout the school year. This evaluation is based on the objectives for each course and takes many forms, including formal testing and informal observation of the student. There are three report periods during the school year, with two ParentTeacher Interviews. This gives parents and teachers, an opportunity to discuss the students progress. These interviews do not preclude parents or teachers communicating at any time. If either has concerns about your child s progress prompt attention to the matter is encouraged. STUDENT DISCIPLINF/ CARING, SAFE, AND RESPECTFUL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS We are committed to fostering caring, respectful, and safe learning environments which promote socially responsible and respectful behaviors among all members of the school community. We follow the District Administrative Procedure s that supports the following consequences related to discipline:.-problem solving, monitoring or reviewing behavior expectations with student and reprimand; parent involvement and conference referral to attendance board; temporary removal of privileges; Detention of student; Temporary exclusion of student from class; In-school suspension; Out of school suspension; Behavior contract with student;
6 Restitution for property damage to an individual or board; Assessment of student to develop appropriate programming; Reassignment of educational location; Involvement of police; Expulsion from a school or all district schools; We, the staff of Avondale School, look forward to a successful school year! PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES It is expected that students attending Avondale School will arrive at school prepared to learn. This, in large part, is the responsibility of the child s parents. Parents should therefore ensure their children: have adequate rest and arrive at school on time are suitably clothed for current or predicted weather conditions have sufficient and appropriate school supplies have eaten prior to school s start have an adequate lunch communicate pertinent information to school staff reinforce school behavioral expectations STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES Avondale School Staff will consistently exhibit professional behavior as they take responsibility for the learning of their students. Staff members shall: be aware of and consistently apply school and district policies and procedures develop and communicate appropriate classroom expectations teach and review student expectations for a safe and caring school environment respond to student requests for assistance model fair and respectful behavior toward others communicate pertinent information to parents
