1 www donatellfecalifornia org www donevidacalifornia org REGISTRY DMV Donate Life California Month Proclamation City of Gilroy April 2011 WHEREAS organ tissue marrow and blood donation are life-giving acts recognized worldwide as expressions of compassion to those in WHEREAS more than individuals nationwide and more than in California are currently on the national organ transplant waiting list and every 90 minutes one person dies while waiting due to the shortage of donated organs WHEREAS the need for donated organs is especially urgent in Hispanic and African American communities WHEREAS more than units of blood per year are needed to meet the need in California WHEREAS at any given time patients are in need of volunteer marrow donors WHEREAS a single individual s donation of the heart lungs liver kidneys pancreas and small intestine can save up to eight lives donation of tissue can save and heal the lives of up to 50 others and a single blood donation can help three people in need WHEREAS millions of lives each year are saved and healed by donors of organs blood tissues marrow and WHEREAS the spirit of giving and decision to donate are not restricted by age or medical condition WHEREAS nearly eight million Californians have signed up with the state-authorized Donate Life California Registry to ensure their wishes to be organ and tissue donors are honored WHEREAS California residents can sign up with the Donate Life California Registry when applying for or renewing their driver s licenses or 10 cards at the California Department of Motor Vehicles NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that in recognition of National Donate Life Month the month of April 2011 is hereby proclaimed DMV Donate Life California Month in the City of Gilroy and in doing so we encourage all Californians to check YES when applying for or renewing their driver s license or 10 card or by signing up at wwwdonatellfecalifornia orq or www donevidacalifornia orq

3 TCalifornia I ransr ant N etwor Donork www dollllll lfaiiiamii OIJ On behalf of all Californians in need of life-saving and healing organ and tissue transplants please join in our celebration of National Donate Life Month by issuing an official Proclamation declaring April as DMV Donate Life California Month to encourage Californians to enroll as organ and tissue donors Although more than 7 million Californians have signed up with the Donate Life California Registry either online or through the DMV millions of Californians have yet to register their decision With more than Americans and Californians waiting for an organ transplant we need your help We are asking California legislators county supervisors mayors and city council members to participate in and celebrate the life-saving mission of the Donate Life California Organ and Tissue Donor Registry a life-saving tool authorized by the state legislature and supported by the Department of Motor Vehicles In addition to an official proclamation we encourage your participation in a customized ecampaign to inform your employees about the opportunity to save lives by signing up on the Donate Life California Registry A flyer is attached providing more detailed information on ecampaigns We would be honored to have your support of our lifesaving mission California Transplant Donor Network A Donate Life California Organization 1000 Broadway Avenue Ste 600 Oakland CA For more information Sandy Andrada sandrada@ctdn org

4 TCalifornia I ransr ant N Donork etwor www douleufecallfomll ol1 Facts About Organ and Tissue Donation in California The Basics There are currently more than people on the UNOS National Organ Transplant Waiting the national total are listed at California transplant centers List More than or 20 of Nationwide approximately 18 people die each day awaiting life-saving organ transplants waiting list every 13 minutes and a new name is added to the national One organ donor can save up to eight lives and one tissue donor can improve the lives of up to 50 others Of the cases each year in which someone was declared medically suitable for organ donation nearly 70 said yes to donation of the families Needs in Minority Communities Nationwide minorities represent 54 of organ transplant candidates including more than 60 of those awaiting kidney transplants Nearly 75 of those waiting for kidney transplants are people ofcolor In California Latinos make up 35 of those waiting for life-saving transplants Asians Pacific Islanders 16 and African Americans another 14 Nationwide African Americans comprise 12 of the total population but represent 35 of kidney transplant candidates This high proportion is due to a higher incidence of diabetes and hypertension Biology Organs that may be donated in order of frequency transplanted include the kidneys liver heart lungs pancreas intestine and small Tissues that may be donated include corneas eyes heart valves skin bone tendons cartilage and veins Countering Misconceptions All major religions support or permit organ and tissue donation Organs are allocated fairly and equitably based on medical criteria Priority depends on medical factors such as urgency of need length of time on the waiting list blood type and organ size compatibility Race gender age income and celebrity status are not considered when determining who receives an organ There is no cost to the donor or his her family for donation There are no limitations on those who can sign up to be donors even when past disease or certain chronic conditions may be present Adults age 50 represented 30 of organ donors and 70 tissue donors in 2007 Ultimately the decision as to whether or not organs or tissue are suitable for transplantation will be made by medical specialists at the time of donation The message Don trule yourself out Sign up to give life www donatellfecalifornia orq or www donevidacalifornia orq
