Using Brain Gym to Improve Learning and Behaviour of Clients November 10, 2011 Physiotherapy Commissioned Training Program (2011/12) Advances in Body Mind Therapies in Disease Management & Promotion of Mental Health Director, Brain Body Centre

Welcome to Brain Gym! To Live Is to Move...as you rediscover the physical skills involved in your personal learning process, you ll realize how each one of us is engaged in a lifelong odyssey of growth. - Paul Dennison, Ph.D. and Gail Dennison

What is Brain Gym? 26 movements developed by educator and reading specialist and Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D. Concentration and Focus Memory Academics: reading, writing, math, test taking Physical coordination Relationships Self-responsibility Organization skills Attitude

What is Brain Gym? Brain Gym programme encompasses the 26 movements, the processes/techniques, and the educational theory behind the work. The Brain Gym programme references the: Educational model of drawing out and honouring the individual Value of goal setting and noticing Importance of movement as it relates to optimal living and learning

Edu-K Balance: 5 steps Process to Easy Learning & Change of Behaviour 1. Find your PACE 2. Set & PACE a goal 5. Do post-activities 4. Choose from a learning menu 3. Do pre-activities Whata balance does: Facilitates new learning by creating new movement patterns and new neural pathways in relation to a goal Celebrate!

1. Find Your P.A.C.E. Hook ups (Positive) Cross Crawl (Active) Brain Buttons (Clear) Sipping Water (Energetic)

Sipping Water 喝 水 Do you feel energetic? Sipping water in small amount frequently helps restore hydration Water supplies electrolytes that carry electrical potential across cell membranes Helps build new neural networks as we learn Prepares us to benefit from doing Brain Buttons

Brain Buttons 腦 開 關 Do you feel clearheaded? Does your vision also feel clear? Brain Buttons are Reflex Points for the eyes. Stimulating them is like a mini balance for crossing the midline Restore centralized vision, find our visual centre Prepares us to do the Cross Crawl, which requires our crossing the midline

The Cross Crawl 交 叉 爬 行 Do you feel coordinated as you move through space? Alternatively move one arm and its opposite leg, then the other arm and its opposite leg.

Hook-ups 掛 鉤 Are you feeling organized, and able to concentrate on the task at hand, or are you easily distracted and unable to think? Part I of Hook ups Activates the vestibular system and balance-related muscles, supporting us in restoring equilibrium after stress Part II offers a metaphor for the concentration of hemispheres through the corpus callosum.

2. Set and PACE a Goal In what situation would you like to read, comprehend or memorize better?

3. Do pre-activities Eye tracking Eyes look up, down, left, right
