CHENG LIBRARY INFORMATION ON DEMAND David and Lorraine Cheng Library William Paterson University of New Jersey
The Problem(s) Publically accessible Library information limited to OPAC search results. Custom queries possible, but the information is static and of limited value to the Library s external users. Voyager server needs to remain in a protected area of the network houses users personal information. Today s users expect availability of rich data, yet we have no mechanism to provide it.
The Objective(s) To make a larger amount of information, from a greater number of sources, available to: Internal users library staff Campus users students, faculty, university staff Public users Queries against other systems to run interactively, using ColdFusion, PHP and other dynamic tools. Maintain ILS security and university server standards. Allow users to determine and obtain data on demand.
The Players Kurt Wagner Head of Library Information Systems Ray Schwartz Systems Specialist Librarian Mark Sandford Special Formats Cataloger Tony Joachim Reference Librarian James DeRose ILS Server System Administrator WPUNJ Information Systems staff
Kurt Wagner At Cheng Library since Primary Library liaison with other campus IT groups, Previous successes with collaborative projects: Print management Wireless laptop loaner program Proxy server Interested in: Ubiquitous access to information all users
The Collaboration The Library, along with other campus units: Instruction & Research Technology (academic computing), and Information Systems have worked collaboratively on several projects: Configuring, deploying and maintaining circulating wireless laptops Print management Proxy server We have seen that on several occasions IS lacks the Library s skill in customer service.
Ray Schwartz At Cheng Library since Lead analyst of data from Voyager and other library-related systems Interested in: Providing library staff with interactive and on-demand information access. Establishment of data farm. Ongoing mining of data to assist in strategic decisionmaking.
Data Mining and Data Warehousing Extracting data from legacy systems and other resources; cleaning, scrubbing and preparing data for decision support; maintaining data in appropriate data stores; accessing and analysing data using a variety of end user tools; and mining data for significant relationships. Chaffey, D., Mayer, R., Johnston, K., & Ellis-Chadwick, F. (2002). Internet Marketing: Strategy, Implementation and Practice (2nd ed.). Financial Times/ Prentice Hall. 8
Our Goal The primary purpose of these efforts is to provide easy access to specifically prepared data that can be used with decision support applications such as management reports, queries, decision support systems, executive information systems and data mining. Chaffey, D., Mayer, R., Johnston, K., & Ellis-Chadwick, F. (2002). Internet Marketing: Strategy, Implementation and Practice (2nd ed.). Financial Times/ Prentice Hall.

One of Our Projects Mining EZProxy logfiles and linking to patron statistical categories from the Voyager Patron Database What majors and departments are accessing which database services? What majors and departments are accessing the ILL services? 13
Privacy Issues EZProxy transactions would be stored in one table with patron statistical categories, but without the user ID. User ID s would be stored in another table with counts for each service divided by academic year. Logs are collected monthly and loaded and deleted monthly.
Reporting and Standards Reporting ed periodically - e.g., daily dossiers, and other event triggered reports. On demand, via , web pages or a printer. Standards Share data for comparative research. Groups of libraries and consortia
