1 Scientific Scientific Scientific imaging requires high-performance cameras. Thorlabs Scientific-Grade CCD are specifically designed for microscopy and other demanding applications. Our cameras are based on high quantum efficiency, low-noise CCD imagers, which make them ideal for multispectral imaging, fluorescence microscopy, and other imaging techniques. The features and options in our cameras have been chosen and optimized to benefit and enhance your research. For instance, cooled cameras are available for lowlight, long exposure applications. Choose from three industry-standard interfaces designed to ease system integration. An intuitive software package, API and SDK for developers, and third-party software support provide options for custom system control and image acquisition.

3 Camera Overview Thorlabs scientific cameras are offered in two package styles: a compact, non-cooled package and a hermetically sealed package with a two-stage TEC. The fan-free cooler design provides optimal CCD cooling without vibration, critical for capturing long-exposure images in low-light conditions. Each camera is available with either a USB 3., Gigabit Ethernet (GigE), or a Camera Link interface. GigE is ideal when the camera must be far from the PC or when there are multiple cameras that need to be controlled by the same PC. The USB 3. and Camera Link interfaces offer higher maximum data transfer rates, which are important for certain modes of operation. Hermetically Sealed Cooled Camera Our cameras have three operating modes: streaming overlapped exposure, asynchronous edge-triggered image acquisition, and bulb mode exposure. Each mode may be operated at either 2 or MHz and can support variable binning and region-ofinterest operation. The cameras feature standard C-mount (1."-32) threading, and Thorlabs provides a full line of thread-to-thread adapters for compatibility with other thread standards, including the SM1 (1.3"-) threading used on our Ø1" Lens Tubes. The front face is also equipped with 4- tapped holes for compatibility with our 6 mm Cage System. Four 1/4"-2 tapped holes, one on each side of the housing, are compatible with our Ø1" Posts. These flexible mounting options makes Thorlabs cameras the ideal choice for integration into home-built imaging systems as well as those based on commercial microscopes. Non-Cooled Camera Software ThorCam is powerful software for 32- and 64-bit Windows 7 systems. This easy-touse graphical interface communicates with the camera to provide system control, image acquisition, and play back. Single-image capture and image sequences are supported. ThorCam Software GUI Application programming interfaces (APIs) and a software development kit (SDK) are included for the development of custom applications by OEMs and developers. Support for third-party software packages, such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, µmanager/imagej, and Metamorph, is provided.
4 Images from Selected Applications Intracellular Dynamics Fast Frame Rate can be used for Ca 2+ ratiometric studies of intracellular dynamics. Highspeed imaging is made possible by the fast frame rate of the camera as two excitation wavelengths are switched in rapid succession. Alternately, quantitative imaging data can be acquired from fluorescence emission at two distinct wavelengths. u Fast Frame Rate, VGA u ROI and Binning Modes Brightfield Microscopy A brightfield microscopy image showing Ki-67 labeled tonsil cells. The sample slide consists of multi-labeled bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells (BPAEC), showing at least one example of a double nucleus. u 4 Megapixel Multispectral Imaging A series of multispectral images taken with different passband wavelengths; the final stacked color image is shown. High QE scientific cameras are especially beneficial for obtaining low light, narrowband images. This image was acquired using a Thorlabs KURIOS-WB1 Liquid Crystal Tunable Filter. u 4 Megapixel u Fast Frame Rate, VGA u ROI and Binning Modes Scanning Electron Microscopy Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image of a nickel sample. Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) results in Kikuchi patterns that result from the interaction between the electron beam and the sample material. Our high QE, low noise cameras make possible high speed detection and analysis of these faint line patterns against relatively high backgrounds. u NIR Responsivity Simultaneous NIR/DIC and Fluorescence One common technique to monitor complex cell dynamics uses fluorophores to identify relevant cells within a sample, while simultaneously using NIR or differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy to probe individual cells. Here mouse kidney cells were imaged using a dichroic filter to acquire live fluorescence and DIC images with two different cameras. These images were then combined into a 2-channel composite live image with a false color applied to the fluorescence image by the ThorCam overlay plugin.
