1 MOBILITY SCOOTERS In sheltered housing schemes
2 Mobility Scooters This leaflet explains our policy on storing mobility scooters in our sheltered housing schemes. Our aim We want to help our customers to increase their mobility to and from their homes without unnecessarily putting the health and safety of anyone at risk. Fire safety Fire Safety Regulations forbid the storage or use of mobility scooters in communal areas, lifts or corridors, as they could prevent people from easily evacuating the building if there was a fire. So where can I store my scooter? After consultation with customers we have agreed two alternative locations for storing your mobility scooters.
3 Mobility Scooter Stores All our sheltered schemes will be provided with a designated mobility scooter store. If you need help to move from your home to the mobility scooter store, you are allowed to use a motorised wheel chair within the scheme, which can then be left in the mobility store until you return with your mobility scooter. At home Alternatively you can store your mobility scooter in your own home if you have an external door, that allows your mobility scooter direct access to your home, without having to use communal areas, corridors or lifts. If you need any alterations to be carried out to your home to allow you to safely store your mobility scooter, please ensure that you have asked us for written consent before you start any work. This is to protect your health and safety and ensure that any alterations comply with any necessary planning or building regulations.
4 When will I be able to charge my scooter? Charging facilities are provided within our mobility scooter stores. Please contact your Community Scheme Manager to allocate you a space where available. Scooters should not be left on permanent charge and only charged for the manufactures recommended time. Please check your scooters instructions for details. All charger's will receive an annual Portable Appliance Test (PAT) by electricians employed by Gloucester City Homes to ensure that the equipment is in a fit condition to be used. If your charger fails this test then it is your responsibility to have it repaired before it can be used again.
5 What should I do if I want to buy a scooter? Before buying a mobility scooter, you must check with your Community Scheme Manager to see if there is room available within the designated mobility scooter store for your scooter or if your home is suitable for storing your mobility scooter. We recommend that you have training and test drive any mobility scooter before you buy one, to ensure that it is suitable for your needs. This can be provided by the retailer if you are buying a new scooter or by Shop Mobility located in Gloucester City centre at Hampdon Way, where you can hire a scooter on a daily basis.
6 Do I need insurance? Yes all owners of a mobility scooter that are stored either within their home or within the mobility scooter store are required to have insurance. This is necessary to cover any damage or accidental injury that may occur from the use or storage of your mobility scooter. A copy of the insurance certificate must be given to your Community Scheme Manager, to keep in your personal file. You must renew your insurance when it ends and again provide the new insurance Certificate to your Community Scheme Manager. Insurance is available from a range of general and specialist insurers and you can use the computer in the common room to help you find the best deal available. Just let your Community Scheme Manager know if you need any help.
7 What happens if I don t comply with all the above requirements? Unfortunately we have to be very firm on this issue to ensure that the health and safety of our customers is not put at risk. Failure to comply with the requirements outlined in this leaflet will result in a breach of your tenancy conditions. This would result in you being asked to permanently remove the mobility scooter from the scheme, until you are able to fully comply with the necessary requirements. Can I get any further information?
