2 Fortner/Fautner/Loyd/Carey Family History Most of the following information came from the U. S. Census records. From 1790 through 1840, the population censuses listed the name of the head of household only and the rest of the family was tallied according to their age, sex, race, and (later) employment, and the number of slaves held. Beginning in 1850, all free persons were listed by name with their characteristics, which then included occupation, place of birth (state or country) and school enrollment. Recording African Americans by name started in 1870 although I have found a few records of blacks in the 1860 census in some states. Those blacks found before 1870 are normally living in their slave master s home. Individual household censuses are taken every ten years and only those records from can be viewed currently. A fire on January 10, 1921 destroyed most of the 1890 Census. To protect the privacy of living persons who may appear in the censuses, the government requires a 72- year waiting period from the year a census is taken before it can be released to the general public. For this reason, the 1940 census (Which will include people born between 1931 and 1940) was made available on April 12 this year. Census takers often misspelled family member names. They sometimes spelled the names phonetically (Transcribing the sounds of human speech into writing) or used nick names. Therefore, it is sometimes very difficult to track relatives by the names recorded in census records. There is a major problem when tracking females, since their last name changed after marriage. 3 1870 Richman Falkner Continued The first of the Falkner/Falconer/Fortner/Fautner ancestors are found in the 1870 US Census Records is Richmon and Caroline Falkner in Enterprise, Clark, Mississippi. Richman is 40 and Caroline is 45 years old. That makes his birthdate 1830 and Caroline s birthdate is 1825, which means that they were born slaves. Notice the spelling of the last name, (Falkner). Names were often misspelled or spelled phonetically by census takers (Transcribing the sounds of human speech into writing). At some point in time, Falkner became Falconer then Fortner and Fautner. Richman and Caroline Falkner had their first child in 1846 when Lucinda was born. Therefore, Richman was 16 and Caroline was 21. Since the relationship column did not appear until the 1880 census, I think that the children listed under Lucinda are her kids. William was born in 1857, Shack in 1858, Jefferson in 1862 and Caroline in If Lucinda was 24 year old in 1870, she would have had William at age 11. I am not sure of how Narah, Eldridge and George are related to Richman and Caroline Falkner (See 1880 census below) Narah Falkner Census In the 1870 census, Narah, Eldridge and George Falkner are found living with Richman and Caroline Falkner. In the 1880 census, they are living with Wisdon Williams. Narah is Wisdon wife; Eldridge and George are listed as Wisdon brother-in-laws. 2

4 1880 Richman Falconer Census In the 1880 Census, you will find Richman and Caroline still in Clark County, MS. They now live along and their last name has gone from Falkner to Falconer. Narah and Lucinda lives down the road from them. The 1880 census is the last census Richman and Caroline is found. The 1880 Lucinda Haney Census In the 1880 census, Lucinda Haney lives down the road from Richman and Caroline in Clark County, MS. She is married to Sandy Haney and has four children; Jane, George, Gerard and Sims. This means that if Lucinda is Shack s mother, she had two sets of children. The 1900 Lucinda Haney Census In the 1900 census, Lucinda Haney is found in Choctaw County, AL with son Sandy, Granddaughter, Lillie Fortner, Grandsons Elisha and Marshall Fortner. Elisha and Marshall are listed as Grandsons, which means that their father, which is Shack, is her son. The 1910 Lucinda Haney Census In 1910, you will find Lucinda (Sinday) Haney still in Choctaw County, AL with Grandson Man Haney and his wife Edna. This is the last census record found for Lucinda Haney. 3

5 The 1900 Shack Fortner Census The 1900 census finds Shack Fortner living with his wife Jennie in Southwest, Jones, Mississippi. Children are Clarence and Elias Fortner. The 1910 and 1920 census records for Shack Fortner could not be found. The 1930 Shack Fortner/Man Haney Census The 1930 census shows Shack living next door to Man Haney and family in Choctaw County Alabama. Dosca Lee (Julia Wash s mother) lives with Man Haney. Shack is found with second wife Cornelia and son Rudolph. The 1940 Shack Fortner/Elias Fortner/Clarence Gibson Census The 1940 Shack Fortner Census Continued In the 1940 census, you will find Shack back in Jones County, MS with wife Cornelia and son Rudolph. Shack lives between stepson, Clarence Gibson and family and son Elias Fortner and family Marshall Fortner Census 4

The 1930 Shack Fortner/Man Haney Census The 1930 census shows Shack living next door to Man Haney and family in Choctaw County Alabama. Dosca Lee (Julia Wash s mother) lives with Man Haney.

6 As shown in the 1900 Lucinda Census above, Marshall lived with Lucinda Haney in Choctaw, Al. Marshall Fortner, son of Shack Fortner, married his second wife, Fannie Mae Loyd in Fannie is the daughter of Agnew and Lucy Moore Loyd. Marshall s children of his first wife somehow got the name Fautner. The 1910 and 1920 census records for Marshall Fortner could not be found Fannie Mae Loyd Census The 1910 Census shows Fannie Mae Loyd living with her Grandparents, Sam and Nancy Young Moore, in Choctaw County, AL. Marshall s children of his first wife somehow got the name Fautner. The 1910 and 1920 census records for Marshall Fortner could not be found.

8 1930 Marshall Fortner Census The 1930 census record shows Marshall and wife Fannie with kids, Roosevelt and Bennie Lee in Choctaw County, Al Marshall Fortner (Paine Haney) Census The 1940 census shows that Marshall has changed his name to Paine Haney for some reason. He is living in Toxey, AL with wife Fannie and children; Roosevelt, Bennie Lee, Alice, Ollie May, Nancy, Marshall and Dorothy P Haney Marshall Fortner Death 7

12 In Conclusion I have not been able so far to trace the Fortner and Loyd ancestry back to a specific location in Africa. The first of the Fortner ancestors are found in the 1870 census in Enterprise (Clark) Mississippi. The census records show that the Fortner ancestors migrated back and forth between MS and AL. The frist of the Loyd and Carey ancestors are found in the 1880 census in Choctaw County AL. Most of the Loyd and Carey ancestors on the other hand, lived in Choctaw, AL all of their lives. 11
