Advanced Client Installation with the Client Push Installation Wizard

1 Start Does the have Modify permission for the site security object class or instance? Obtains Modify permission for the site security object class or instance. Navigates to Client Installation Methods and the Accounts tab on the Client Push Installation Properties dialog box and then specifies the accounts to use to install the SMS client software. Specifies the installation properties for installing the Advanced Client software (on the Advanced Client tab). The accounts specified should have credentials on the destination computers. For more information about Advanced Client installation, see Chapter 17, Discovering Resources and Deploying Clients, in the Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Concepts, Planning, and Deployment Guide. Navigates to the site Collections or site Queries. Will the use an existing collection? All destination computers must be running Windows 2000 or later operating systems. Creates a collection of destination computers that are to become Advanced Clients. Right-clicks the selected collection or query.

2 Clicks All Tasks and Install Client. The Client Push Installation Wizard is displayed. Clicks Next. Selects the Install the SMS client and Advanced Client options on the Installation options page. Clicks Next. Selects specific client installation options on the Client Installation Options page. Will the Advanced Client be installed on domain controllers? Selects the Include domain controllers check box. Will the Advanced Client be installed on clients assigned to this SMS site? Selects the Include only clients assigned to this site check box. Will the Advanced Client be installed on subcollections? Selects the Include subcollections check box. Clicks Next. Reviews the installation details on the Completing the Client Push Installation Wizard page. Clicks Finish.

3 Generates a client configuration request (CCR) for each computer in the destination collection. The runs on either the site server or the computer running SQL Server, depending on whether the site has a local or remote provider. Places each CCR into the SMS\Inboxes\CCR.box file. Client Configuration Manager (CCM) Client Configuration Manager Selects CCR from the SMS\Inboxes\CCR.box file on the site server. Client Configuration Manager Uses the Push Installation account to connect to the admin$ share on the destination computer specified in the CCR. See the CCM status messages in CCM.log. Client Configuration Manager Installs Ccmsetup.exe as a service on the destination computer. Client Configuration Manager (CCM) Advanced Client Installer (Ccmsetup.exe) Ccmsetup.exe Connects to the management point client share \\<management point>\smsclient\i386 to download Client.msi to the client computer. Ccmsetup.exe Downloads Client.msi to the client computer. Ccmsetup.exe Runs Client.msi on the client computer.

4 Client.msi Attempts to install the Advanced Client on the destination computer. Advanced Client Installer (Ccmsetup.exe) Opens Ccmsetup.log (Ccmsetup.log is located in the %windir%\system32\ccmsetup folder). For each destination computer in the collection, Ccmsetup.exe should have: 1. Connected to the management point. 2. Downloaded Client.msi from the management point to the destination computer. Opens the Client.msi.log file and verifies that the Advanced Client was successfully installed (exit code 0) on the destination computers. Verifies that the Ccmexec Service is running on the client computer. Were any Advanced Client installations unsuccessful? Review log files Does the SMS administrator want to investigate unsuccessful Advanced Client installations by reviewing the log files or the status messages? Opens the provider log file on the SMS site server (logs/smsprov.log) or on the computer running SQL Server (SMS_Prov/logs/ smsprov.log). Verifies that a CCR was created for the client. Review status messages Determines why a CCR was not created for the client computer that failed to install the Advanced Client and then corrects the problem (see Smsprov.log). Is a CCR present in the Ccrretry.box file for the client computer that failed to install the Advanced Client?

5 Takes corrective action and starts the Client Push Installation again to install the Advanced Client. Reviews the Ccm.log file for error messages for the destination computer that failed to install the Advanced Client. Selects an unsuccessful Advanced Client installation and reviews the available s. returned: 3013? Ensures that the latest version of the SMS Administrator console is used to manage the SMS Client Remote Installation account list. returned: 3014? Verifies that the client computer is connected to the network and that the SMS Service account or the SMS Client Remote Installation account has the required privileges. returned: 3015? Verifies that the client computer is connected to the network and that the client computer is assigned to an SMS site. This requires that a server locator point and management point are published to WINS or in an Active Directory environment. returned: 3016? Verifies that the client computer is running a supported operating system.

6 returned: 3017? Verifies that the client computer is not a domain controller. Does the SMS administrator want to investigate the failed Advanced Client installation further? Takes corrective action and starts the Client Push Installation again to install the Advanced Client.
