1 Bruxism What Is It? Bruxism is the term that refers to grinding and clenching of the teeth. Bruxers are often unaware that they have this habit and so do not seek treatment until damage has been done to the teeth. It is not fully understood why people grind their teeth but stress is one possible reason. Most people that grind their teeth do so at night, but some will even clench and grind throughout the day. Some Symptoms Of Bruxism Depending on the severity of the grinding you may experience some or all of the following: facial pain sensitive teeth tense facial and jaw muscles headaches especially upon waking dislocation of the jaw damage to the tooth enamel, exposing the inside of the tooth (dentin) a popping or clicking when you open your mouth tongue indentations damage to the inside of the cheek Bruxism Can Cause The Following Damage To Your Mouth: Chipped teeth Flattened chewing surfaces on the teeth Loose teeth Fractured or broken teeth Damage to previous dental work Treatments For Bruxism
2 Treatment for bruxism can include some or all of the following depending on the severity of the bruxing. Behavior Modification Teaching the patient to avoid sticky or chewy foods and to avoid opening wide. Mouthpiece A specially-fitted plastic mouth appliance may be worn at night to absorb the force of biting. This appliance may help to prevent future damage to the teeth and aid in changing the patient's behavior. Decrease stress Reducing the stress may help decrease the grinding. The best way to decrease stress is to exercise. Medcation Sometimes medication will be prescribed to help relieve sore muscles or reduce stress. Bruxism in Children Tooth grinding is often seen in children. Children grind their teeth in response to the pain and discomfort of other ailments such as a colds or ear infections. Usually bruxism in children is a passing phenomena which they grow out of with no adverse effects to their teeth. Information on occlusal guards The dentist will recommend that you wear the guard at night but may also may have you wear it during the day. This is especially recommended when you are tense and find yourself clenching and grinding. You may notice an increase saliva flow for a few days. It may take you a couple of weeks to get used to wearing the mouth guard. If you find you are waking up with the mouth guard not in your mouth do not worry just place it in your mouth again the next night. You may notice that your bite feels differently for a few minutes after removing the mouth guard from your mouth. This is normal and is cause by your jaw muscles being relaxed
3 Types of Occlusal Guards There are two main types of Occlusal Guards. The traditional occlusal guard covers all of the teeth on either the top or bottom jaw. Another type of occlusal guard is smaller than the traditional guard. It only covers a couple of the front teeth, again it can be made for either the top or bottom jaw. Your dentist will do an evaluation to see which type of guard would work the best for you. Maintainance It's very easy to maintain your new occlusal guard just clean both sides carefully with a toothbrush and toothpaste every time you remove it from your mouth. Do not use alcohol or alcohol-based products on your guard and never boil your occlusal guard Other TMJ tips Please avoid eating tough and chewy foods if you are having jaw pain, or while your TM joints, ligaments and muscles are healing. It is also helpful to apply heat to the affected area of the face when you have TMJ pain. Use a damp washcloth under a hot water bottle for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day. Sipping on hot liquid, such as tea, and rolling them around in your mouth may provide comfort.
