Kitchen waste composting

Yard waste composting Steps: Pictures courtesy of the project of Dr. F. C. Sanchez, Jr. 1. Choose an area that is not water logged. 2. Prepare an improvised platform to provide air passage using woody trashes.

3. Use large trash leaves as lining. 4. Pile loosely yard wastes. 5. Moisten the wastes especially when dry. 6. Apply TMI or activator g/ton of wastes (0.025 to 0.05%)evenly over the wastes; more TMI are needed if wastes are woody.

7. Apply animal manure if available. Ideal ratio 20 30% animal manure to the total wt of the substrates. This step is optional. Woody chips 8. Add more yard wastes. 9. Apply evenly again the TMI. 10. Moisten when the wastes are dry. 11. Add the manure again. Repeat the whole process until all wastes are utilized. Sequence yard wastes, moisten, activator, manure

Last layer of yard wastes 12. Cover the pile with plastic. Cover will keep the heat generated by microbial respiration which are active in decay process. Cover will also keep the wastes moist. 13. Coconut/banana leaves can also be used as cover. Compost after two months. The only recognizable original substrates were the fruit peelings - soft and can be easily crushed. Hard and woody materials take longer time to fully decompose.
