Education and Training - A Social Determinants of Health approach holistic health education and vocational training to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to manage and determine their future

The education revolution begins and ends with people: teaching them, giving them skills; and, with those skills, the confidence and wherewithal to do their very best for themselves and their communities. Mick Dobson 2009

social disadvantage, directly related to dispossession and characterised by poverty and powerlessness, is reflected in measures of their education, employment, income and housing.

Health services are not the sole answer to the health problems of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Improvements in the living conditions and economic and social circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will be necessary to ensure significant progress.

3.0% of Indigenous people aged 15 years or older had never attended school, compared with only 1.0% of non-indigenous people; 17% of Indigenous people and 38% of non-indigenous people reported having completed year 12 or equivalent (people aged 15 years or older); less than 2% of the Indigenous population reported attending a university or other tertiary institution, compared with almost 4% of the non-indigenous population; and among those who had left school, 35% of the non-indigenous population had some form of post-secondary school qualification (including degrees, diplomas, and trade or basic qualifications), compared with less than 15% of Indigenous people

The proportion of Indigenous students achieving the Year 3 literacy benchmarks and Year 5 innumeracy benchmarks has increased. School retention rates at years 10 and 12 have improved over the last 5 years.

Health and education are key areas that must be addressed in order to reduce the gap. ABS (2006) shows association with people who have education and the chronic disease. People with high education have better health

EVERY child geared up for the start of the school year. A school to go to with chairs and tables, blackboards and computers. Teachers ready, confident and determined. Equipped to impart knowledge and confidence. Shoes on the kids feet. Breakfast in their tummies. Well rested. Ready to learn. Willing to learn. Able to learn. That s my hope. And I m going to do my best to make it real

The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels, which are themselves influenced by policy choices. The social determinants of health are mostly responsible for health inequities - the unfair and avoidable differences in health status seen within and between countries. WHO

education and training courses which are sensitive to the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the impact on education outcomes and longer term health outcomes for individuals, families and communities approaches to prevention of illness and promotion of health in education and training programs peoples' perceptions of what can be achieved and aspired to the role of government, business, industry and nongovernment organisations and the non-health sector in prevention, well being, health and productivity

We need to educate health workers about Indigenous health.
