2 Biography: Antonio Loureiro is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. Professor Loureiro holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia, Canada, His main research areas are mobile, ubiquitous and autonomic computing, computer networks and distributed systems. In the last 10 years he has published over 70 papers in international conferences and journals. Most of those papers were presented by Professor Loureiro who also has been the instructor of six tutorials in Brazilian conferences in the last five years. In August 2004, he presented a plenary session at the International Workshop on Telecommunications, and, in May 2005, he presented the tutorial entitled Management of Wireless Sensor Networks at the 9th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management. Currently, the two authors are preparing a book entitled Energy in Wireless Sensor Networks to be published by an international publisher. Since 1996, when he became a faculty member at UFMG, Professor Loureiro has received six times the Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award in Computer Science from the students at the Department of Computer Science. He was the TPC Chair for LANOMS 2001 (Latin American Network Operations and Management Symposium, sponsored by IEEE Communications Society) and for the 2005 ACM Workshop on Wireless Multimedia Networking and Performance Modeling. Raquel Mini holds a B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. Since 1999 she is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at PUC Minas, Brazil. In her Ph.D. thesis she studied the energy map construction in wireless sensor network. Since 2001 she has been studying energy aware protocols for these networks. In the last 3 years, she has published 11 papers about wireless sensor networks in international conferences and journals. Her main research areas are sensor networks, distributed algorithms, and mobile computing. Abstract: A fundamental issue in the design of a wireless sensor network (WSN) is to devise mechanisms to make efficient use of its energy, and thus, extend its lifetime. All solutions for WSNs must be energy-efficient in order to make better use of the limited energy supply of sensors. In this tutorial, we investigate the role of energy in the design of WSN solutions, specially in application design. The WSN application have to be designed considering the scarce amount of energy. Then, some applications just try to save as much energy as possible in order to be suitable for this new kind of network. Others use the amount of available energy locally when performing a given task. However, in many cases, to look at just the amount of available energy at a node may either be insufficient or lead to an unacceptable solution. Due to the limited energy restriction, understanding the role of the energy is of paramount importance to design WSN applications. 2
3 Outline: This tutorial will cover the following topics: 1. Brief overview of wireless sensor networks: the basic operation of a wireless sensor networks (WSN) will be presented. The main goal of this network is to get sensor devices to collaborate and monitor specific phenomena. The main challenge is to aggregate sensor nodes into computational infrastructures that are able to produce globally meaningful information from raw local data obtained by individual sensor nodes. The main differences between WSN and traditional computer networks will be presented. (15 minutes) 2. Energy sources for wireless sensor networks: the meaning of energy will be discussed in this topic. The main energy sources and energy storage will be presented. The main topic to be covered is the energy usage in WSNs and the energy harvesting that is the process by which energy is captured and stored. (20 minutes) 3. Sensor node technology from the point of view of energy: many network dimensions such as network lifetime, node location, routing, security should be considered in order to choose the sensor node technology. However, the energy restriction should be considered in all of them. (15 minutes) 4. Wireless networking considering energy: in this part it will be discussed how protocols are dealing with energy restriction. Some protocols just try to save as much energy as possible in order to be suitable for this new kind of network. Others use the amount of available energy locally when performing a given task. However, in many cases, to look at just the amount of available energy at a node may either be insufficient or lead to an unacceptable solution. (1 hour and 30 minutes) 5. Application design of networked sensor systems considering energy: in this topic it will be discussed how to design WSN applications considering energy. Some real-world applications will be presented. (1 hour and 30 minutes) 6. Conclusions and future directions: WSN application design has many dimensions to consider but energy should be present in all of them. (10 minutes) 3
4 Tutorial History: This tutorial was presented at the Fourth International Conference on Networked Sensing Systems (INSS), 2007 ( Both authors have large experience on energy aware solutions for wireless sensor networks.
