2 Third year & up Welding Guidelines The 4-h wielding project is intended to give the 4-H members the fundamental background in the major aspects of welding. The emphasis is for each member to master hand manipulative skills, develop successful welding techniques and to also gain an understanding of the equipment and specialized tool being used in the welding field. Each member progresses at his/her own rate as demonstrated by his/her ability and application. It is inherent in this type on instruction that a great deal of emphasis is put on safety, individual instruction, demonstration and application. Project Objectives: 1. To understand the proper care and maintenance of welding equipment and accessories. 2. To be familiar with the terms and definitions of welding. 3. To acquire knowledge of the techniques involved in welding. Techniques to be taught: 1. Member should be doing some out-of-position welding, flame cutting and fitting. 2. Project is to be creative. You may use different processes. What to Turn in: Completed record book and unit questions (please make sure this is in a binder) Lap (pg 38 Arcs & sparks) and V- Weld open route Coupon: (weld your coupons with your favorite process) Please Show 1. Vertical 2. Horizontal 3. Overhead Project: Unit 3 Be Creative!! Take what you have learned and mix it all together Welds are NOT to be ground off you may wire brush and painted Make sure all items have your name and club name on them.

3 Unit Two Question Sheet (Turn in with your record book after your plan sheet) 1. What is Welding? A. Welding is a manufacturing process. B. Welding is a metals fabrication trade. C. Welding is a metal joining process by the use of heat. Welding is a job skill. D. Welding can not be defined. 2. How many types of welding (welding process) are there? A. Over 150 B. 25 to 50 C. Amperage setting too high may cause what defect? A. Excessive buildup B. Overlap C. Undercut D. Lack of penetration 15. Travel speed too fast is usually associated with which defects? A. Lack of fusion, surface cracks B. Undercut, under fill C. Porosity, under bead cracks D. None of the above 16. Many welding defects can be attributed to? A. Wrong/ incorrect amperage setting, polarity selection B. Wrong/ incorrect electrode angle, arc length C. Wrong/ incorrect travel speed, manipulation technique D. All of the above 17. Acetylene line pressure should be what PSI? A. 5 B. 10 C Oxygen line pressure should be what PSI A. 5 B. 10 C After using the Oxyacetylene torch you should turn off the acetylene first and then the oxygen 20. When lighting the acetylene gas the oxygen should be turned off on the torch tip 21. The Acetylene tank is green 22. What factors should be taken into consideration when selection an electrodes for the job to be done? 23. Why should the electrode be clamped at its extreme end?
