1 Technical report ECE.P /18/02 Introduction Radar Application for Stalker DSR Radar Unit Nevenka Kozomora The Radar Application as a part of the Project54 application software enables police officers to control the radar using the Project54 user interface [1]. The version of the Radar Application, which is described here, is created to work with the Stalker DUAL DSR radar unit. Stalker DUAL DSR Radar Device The radar device consists of a computer unit, a handheld remote control, and antennas. The computer unit calculates and displays the speeds of the patrol and target vehicles. The computer unit can send the calculated speeds to other devices thought its serial port. The radar device can work in five different modes. 1. Stationary Away Mode The patrol vehicle stands beside the road and all targets moving away from the radar will be displayed. 2. Stationary Close Mode The patrol vehicle stands beside the road and all targets moving towards the radar beam will be displayed. 3. Stationary Bi-directional Mode The patrol vehicle stands beside the road. All targets moving in the radar beam will be displayed regardless of which direction they are moving in. 4. Moving Opposite Mode The patrol and the target vehicle are both moving but in opposite directions. 1

2 5. Moving Same Mode The patrol and the target vehicle are both moving in the same direction. The front panel of the computer unit is shown in Figure 1. Three display windows are located on the front panel. The Target window displays the speed of the target vehicle (orange display on front panel in Figure 1). The Patrol window displays the speed of the patrol vehicle (green display on front panel in Figure 1). The middle window has two functions (red display on front panel in Figure 1). If the locked button, on the radar remote control, is pressed, the speed of the target appears in the middle window. The target speed can be locked any time it appears in the Target widow. Every speed lock is followed by a three-word voice enunciation that indicates which antenna is on, what mode the radar is in and what direction the target is moving in. The second purpose of the middle window is to display the speed of the fastest vehicle from the group of vehicles in the radar beam. When the group of vehicles is on the road, the radar unit will display the speed of the strongest target (big truck) in the Target window and the speed of fastest target (sports car) in the middle window. The speed of the fastest target can also be locked in the middle window when it becomes the same as the speed of strongest target in the Target window [2]. In addition, additional displays for mode symbols and system messages are located on the front panel of the radar unit. Figure 1: Stalker DSR-Front panel 2

3 On the rear panel of the computer unit, two antenna ports are present as well as a serial communication port. The communication port is also used to connect the radar device to power. Connecting the radar to the power and another serial port is accomplished using a Y-cable, as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Connection of the radar unit to power The range of the antenna beams and the volume of the Doppler tone are adjustable. The brightness of the radar display is also adaptable [2]. Connecting the Radar Device to the Project54 System The Radar is connected to the IDB via a Common IDB Interface [3] and a serial Pin Converter, which is needed to pass the data from the radar unit into the Common IDB Interface (Figure 3). 3

4 Figure 3: Stalker Radar System The pinout of the radar serial port is different from the pinout of the Common IDB Interface serial port [3]. Therefore, a Pin Converter is required to connect the two ports. The function of the Pin Converter is shown in Table 1. For example, the Pin Converter connects pin #2 (power and ground) of the radar serial port to pin#5 (ground) of the Common IDB Interface serial port. Conversion is required for two more pins. 5 Interface Data Serial signals from the radar have an adjustable baud rate ( ), eight data bits, no parity, and one stop bit. For operation in the Project54 system, the serial port is set up to send messages in the all-indicators format. The all indicators format means that the communication baud rate is 1200 baud and the output message has 16 bytes. The first byte indicates the message type. The next two bytes are indicators of the temporary radar state. The patrol, locked, fastest and target speeds are located from the fourth to the 15 th byte. The message is in character format. The radar device can be controlled using the serial port. To control the radar a message sent to the radar has to be in the control message format. A control message consists of three bytes. The first byte represents the message type (command byte in Table 2). The second byte is the data. The last byte is a carriage return. For example, we can select the front antenna by sending the following three bytes in sequence: 0x92, 0x31, and 0x0D, where 0x92 is command byte, 0x31 is data in hexadecimal format and 0x0D is the carriage return. A few control message examples are given in Table 2. 6 The command bytes have to be sent to the radar in character format. In the radar application, the command bytes are first converted from hexadecimal format to character format and then sent to the radar device. Graphical User Interface (GUI) The GUI of the Radar Application for the Stalker DSR radar unit is shown in Figure 4. Fourteen buttons are established. There are three fields for displaying the target, patrol and locked speeds. The field for the locked speed is also used for displaying the fastest target. In Figure 4, the group of buttons framed in orange turn the antennas on and off. Switching from the front to the rear antenna can be accomplished by pressing the rear button. This will turn off the front antenna and turn on the rear antenna. The button that indicates the current working antenna is labeled green. Pink-framed buttons represent one of the five modes in which the radar can work. The button that indicates the current mode is labeled green. Red-framed buttons set up the radar device. The Audio button manages the strength of the audio signal from the radar device. The desired level of the audio signal can be reached by pressing the Audio button. In the application window, the array of small buttons, which are referenced with the marker Audio, display the level of the audio signal (Figure 4). For example, if the signal level is one, the buttons 0 and 1 in the array will be green (Figure 4). The Range button is used to set up the beam range of the radar antennas. The array of buttons that shows the range level is located below the Audio array and referenced with the marker Range. The Bright button is used for changing the luminosity on the radar display. The last array of buttons, referenced with the marker Bright, shows the level of luminosity on the radar display. The SQL button is used to attenuate the environment noise that affects the Doppler tone. Every time the application is started, the SQL button will be turned on. The Patrol 5/20 button is used to select one of the two selections for low-end patrol speed of either 5 or 20 mph. A released button indicates that patrol speed tracking starts at 20 mph, while a pressed button indicates that 6

7 patrol speed tracking starts at 5 mph. The Patrol Blank button blanks the patrol speed window on the radar device and acquires a new patrol speed. The Test button is used to perform diagnostic checks on the display/counting radar unit and antennas. The Lock button alternates between the lock and lock-off functions (lock-off is shown in Figure 4, lock in Figure 5). Lock is used to transfer the contents of the target window to the lock window in the radar unit display, and for the same transfer from the target field to the lock field in the application window. The lock-off function clears the locked contents of the lock and patrol windows in the display of the radar unit, as well as the locked and target fields in the application window. The target speed can also be locked and released from the remote control. The default state of the radar application is shown in Figure 4. Every time the radar application is invoked, the radar will be set up in Stationary Closing mode. The audio level, beam range level, and brightness will be minimal. Speech communication is implemented in the same way as in the previous radar applications [4],[5]. The user can use voice commands to realize the function of a button in the application, by pressing the Listen button and saying the name of the button. All the voice commands are the same as the labels on the related buttons. The radar application-specific code is in the following routines: void AppHandleSpeech (LPWSTR speech input) {}- Routine for handling the speech input from the Application manager; void AppHandleAlert (LPWSTR alert_message) {}- Routine for handling alert messages from the Application manager; void AppMain (void) {}- Main procedure. These routines are located in the file AppCode.cpp. The file RadarGUI.cpp was changed as well as the corresponding header files. 8

9 Future Work This application does not implement any of the recommendations given in references [4] and [5]. One of the plans was to simplify the Graphical User Interface by splitting the application window into several windows. This would be especially useful in this application, because the Graphical User Interface is more overloaded with buttons than in the previous applications. Another plan was to make the Radar Application use voice for informing the police officer about the target, patrol or locked speed. This would help police officers to keep their eyes on the road all the time and precisely decide which vehicle from the group of vehicles has the speed the application reads. Presently, the police officers have to read the speed from the application window. This means that they have to take their eyes off the road, which should be avoided in the future.
