2 Rebecca Mullins Rebecca Mullins, Redie s maternal grandmother, was born October 12, 1862, in Easterly, Robertson County, Texas, the second daughter and third child to Francis Marion Mullins and Mary Jane McMillan. She was named after her father s mother Rebecca James. As a 16 year-old, she married Joel A. Cheatham February 12, They moved to Buffalo where Joel worked on the railroad for a short time before moving back to Robertson County to farm and run a store. Joel A. and Rebecca had three children: two sons and a daughter Francis Joel Cheatham b. 12 Mar 1882; m. Effie Click Johnnie Edmond b. 8 May 1884; m. Dessie Parish Maudie Lee Cheatham b. 19 Sep 1886; m. James Cleveland Robertson But two and a half months short of a ten years marriage, like so many of that generation, Joel A. died November 22, 1888, leaving his 26 year widow with 3 small children (Francis Joel (6), John Edmond (4), and Maudie Lee (2). One month to the day later, Rebecca died, and left her sister Perlina and brother-in-law Edmond Cheatham (who was also Joel A. s brother) to raise the three small children Maudie and her brothers John and Francis (France). What little Redie knew of her grandmother Rebecca was filtered through Rebecca s sister Perlina as she raised Maudie and told Maudie a few things about her mother. Both Rebecca Mullins Cheatham and Joel A. Cheatham are buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, about two miles from Franklin, Texas. (note: when Redie and Charles A. Shirley went to the Salt Lake Temple in August 1939, Redie immediately did the baptism and endowment for Rebecca and then had her sealed to her parents and to her husband Joel A. Cheatham. [information found on Ancestral File]). Francis Marion Mullins Francis Marion Mullins, Redie s maternal great grandfather, was born in Warren County Tennessee in 1826, a son of Ezekiel Mullins and Rebecca James. (Redie offered a disclaimer in her genealogy books that Rebecca was no kin to Jesse and Frank James.) Cannon County Tennessee was formed from Warren County in 1836, and Francis Marion was living there in the 1850 census. After moving to Robertson County Texas, he met and married Mary Jane McMillan on January 28, Together they had 15 children. With the exception of Rebecca who was born in Easterly, all the rest of the children were born in New Baden. Easterly and New Baden are only about five miles apart, while Franklin and New Baden are about four miles apart in the opposite direction. Most of the residents of Robertson County during the mid nineteenth century were farmers, and Francis Marion was no exception. Mary Smith Redie s records show that they had two other children, but she had no names nor dates for them. Francis Marion Mullins died 9 July 1889, just six months after his daughter Rebecca. His granddaughter Maudie would have been three when he died, so both Francis Marion and Mary Jane would have known Maudie as a baby. Francis Marion s widow Mary Jane died 18 Jun 1908, when Redie was just less that six months old. They are both buried in the Camp Creek Cemetery, about four miles east of New Baden. (note: Redie did Mary Jane s baptism, endowment, and sealing to parents in August 1939; at the same time, Charles did the baptism, endowment, and sealing to parents.) Ezekiel Mullins death before 1869 Ezekiel Mullins, son of Daniel Colman Mullins and Sarah, was born in Georgia in His older brother Daniel had been born in Virginia in Both Daniel C. and Ezekiel were in Warren County Tennessee on a list of the county Tax Districts in They were still in Warren County in the 1820 census. Ezekiel and Coleman appear in the 1830 census. They were both in Cannon County Tennessee between Somewhere around 1854, Ezekiel moved to Robertson County, Texas. He married Rebecca James b in North Carolina. They had 12 children. Unknown Mullins b Unknown Mullins b Senitt (Samantha) Mullins b. 1818; m. Smith and her daughter Rebecca. Daniel Colman Mullins (estimated) Daniel Colman Mullins, son of John Mullins and Elizabeth Betty Conolly, was born around 1752 in Goochland, Virginia and married Elizabeth (maiden name not known). He is listed in his father s will of 1772 as an adult. Daniel served three years in the Revolutionary War, most of the time as a private in the 5 th and 11 th Regiment under Colonel William Russell and Captain Thomas Wills; he also served in the 15 th Regiment under Major Gustasvius B. Wallace in June By December, he was under Colonel Matthew Mullin to Rebecca Mullins Cheatham page 3

4 Daniel Morgan and Colonel Buford. He was at Valley Forge. He was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 census in Rutherford, North Carolina. Their children were: Sarah Mullins b ca 1775 in Virginia; d 1864 DeKalb County Alabama; m William Thomason Daniel Coleman Mullins b ca 1785 in Virginia; d Short Mountain, Cannon County, Tennessee; m. Oridema Lyle Ezekiel Mullins b ca 1790 Georgia; d Robertson County Texas; m. Rebecca James John Mullins b. between ; d John Mullins, son of Richard Mullins and Mary Stephens, was born in Goochland Virginia between 1730 and 1736 and married Elizabeth Betty Conolly. All their children were born in St. James Parish Goochland, Virginia. Cornelius Carroll ( puts his date of birth around 1715 and marrying Elizabeth Connelly. John Mullins of Saint James Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, purchased 370 acres in Goochland County from Henry Harper, for 35 pounds, on 16 Nov The deed was record 17 May John received a land grant for 200 acres in Albemarle County, Virginia in The will of John Mullins of Saint James Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, was admitted to record 16 June It reads: I lend to by beloved with Elizabeth Mullins all my personal estate until such time that my youngest son William Mullins shall come to be twenty one years old. I give to by beloved son John 315 acres of land, lying and being in the county of Albemarle on the waters of Moormans River. My will and desire is all the remainder of my estate be equally divided amongst the rest of my children hereafter named: Henry Mullins, Conerly Mullins, Ann Ewel, Anthony Mullins, Daniel Mullins, Jesse Mullins, Elizabeth Williams, Mary Mullins, William Mullins, David Mullins, and Francis Mullins. Quoted by Cornelius Carroll. Part of the confusion on John Mullins is that Richard Mullins had a John Mullins b. 1730/36 who married Elizabeth Betty Conolly. Richard s brother Patrick Mullins had a John Mullins b. around 1735 in Virginia. According to Cornelius Carroll, Richard and Patrick s father Matthew also had a John Mullins b. ca who married Elizabeth Connelly. That would cut Richard Mullin out of the direct line. Obviously, with at least three John Mullins living in the same vicinity, probably all belonging to the same parish, some of the children will be mixed up. 6 * John and Henry could not be children of John if he were born 1730/36 and Elizabeth were born 1730/35. If they were not married until 16 May 1756, that would also exclude Daniel Colman Mullins (who is Redie s great, great, great, great grandpa) as well as Conolly, Anthony, Jesse, and Elizabeth who would have been born on her parent s wedding day. While those five would have been possible in the permissive twenty-first century, it probably would not have happened in the eighteenth century. **Both Jesse and Joel would not have married Elizabeth Cockes/Cocke on the same date. ***In the will of John Mullins (probably the son of John Mullins and Elizabeth Conolly (Connerly), John mention Maxey Ewell and Anne, his wife, formerly Anne Mullins. ( Richard Mullins 1698/1705 d. Albemarle, Virginia Richard Mullins born somewhere between 1698 and 1705; he married Mary Stephens (b. about 1710) in about 1725 in Albemarle County, Virginia and died in the same place. Richard Mullins purchased 95 acres on Byrd Creek in Goochland County on the north side of the James River for 30 pound June 10, He is mentioned in several court cases, with Richard being the defendant each time, and he seems to have lost almost every case. In one case in 1745/46, he had to pay damages of 4 pounds, 10 shillings plus he was sentenced to throw in 496 pounds of tobacco. In December 1747, Richard didn t show up to court, so a judgment was entered against him for 12 pounds, 6 pence plus costs. Six months later he still failed to appear or pay, so his creditor put a lien on his property. Several years later, he was summoned to court, but he could not be found. Finally, the sheriff tracked him down and hailed him into court. For once, something finally went in his favor, and the case was dismissed. By 1762, he is listed as an insolvent. Richard and Mary Stephens had the following children: Mary Mullins (listed only on sources B and D) James Mullins b. 1730/1735 Hanover County, VA; d. 1771; m. Mary Sullivant Stephen Mullins b VA; m. 7 Matthew Mullins ca ?? Redie s first Mullins ancestor in the New World was Mathew Mullins, a great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather. An eighth generation descendant only has one 256 th blood from that original ancestor, but oh, how important that small part is. That one ancestor became the progenitor of one of the two Huguenot lines of Mullins families who first lived in Virginia. The Huguenots had escaped the ravages of France because of the Wars of Religion in France, with some going to Geneva and the others to England. From 1652 to 1740, all the Virginia Mullins families lived within a forty-mile radius in the area between the James and Rapahannock Rivers, according to the land records and abstracts published in Cavaliers and Pioneers. The name has several different spelling such as Moulin or Moulines as well as Mullen(s). At least eight households of Mullins had settled in this part of Virginia from Matthew Mullins was born somewhere around Since his parentage is not known for certain, he may possibly have been an immigrant himself and arrived with the Huguenots who sailed into Virginia. According to information found on the internet, he is probably the son of John the immigrant of 1666, Edward of 1670, Zachariah of pre-1677 or of William of Middlesex. In 1699, Matthew was assigned 150 acres of land in Pamunkey Neck in New Kent County in Virginia for the transport of a few persons. Later his settlement became part of King and Queen County, then King William County, and finally his holdings were in Hanover County. King William County was formed in 1702 from King and Queen County The lessee of the land at the time was Thomas Ward; the land was actually Indian land, but had reverted to the crown to be leased out to the colonists because it was lying unproductive. On April 25, 1701, Matthew received 268 acres in Pamunkey Neck, King and Queen County, Virginia beginning at the mouth of Cannoe Branch of Nickatawance, on the Mill Road, near the head of Mullen s Branch for the transport of six persons.. In 1704, Matthew Mullins paid quit rents on 150 acres in King William County. In order for Matthew Mullins to be mentioned in the Indian leases and to have obtained 268 acres in 1701 for the transport of six people (which apparently included himself), he would have to have been born around Under the headright system, an individual was given 50 acres for each person he transported to Virginia. [Information found in Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, patent book 9, page 45] The only mention of his wife was on a deed in 1702 in which Matthew and wife Elizabeth deed land to John Slaughter in King William County. Matthew and Elizabeth had the following chidren: Richard Mullins b. ca 1698 in France; m. Mary Stephens Patrick Mullins b. ca 1704 in Virginia ; m. Mary Matthew Mullins b. ca 1715 in Virginia; m. Mary Maupin John Mullins b. ca 1715 Virginia; m. Elizabeth Connelly Matthew Mullin to Rebecca Mullins Cheatham page 7
