2 ArchiMate and The Open Group Join Hands! The board of the ArchiMate Foundation and the board of The Open Group have expressed their intentions to adopt ArchiMate as an independent standard for enterprise architecture modelling and analysis under the aegis of The Open Group. When the ArchiMate Foundation was initiated, international adoption of ArchiMate was expressed as one of the most important goals, the reason being that standards such as ArchiMate need international adoption to have impact and remain viable. The above steps with The Open Group will pave the path towards international adoption. These steps have come sooner than expected. The Open Group themselves were searching for a good standard for enterprise architecture modelling and analysis. ArchiMate will fill in this need. The Open Group also governs TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework). TOGAF mainly contains methods and best practices to create an enterprise architecture. ArchiMate complements this, as it is a language for enterprise architecture models. Thus, TOGAF and ArchiMate can work hand in hand or be used independent from each other. Both TOGAF and ArchiMate will remain independent standards so user organisations have a choice what to adopt. At this very moment, The ArchiMate Foundation, The Telematica Instituut and The Open Group are working out the best way to hand over the rights and obligations. 3 ArchiMate Foundation News New Members In the past few months, several new participants have joined the Foundation. The list includes: Casewise Telelogic ArchiXL Essent LogicaCMG Capgemini Tilburg University SURFfoundation and individual memberships from Adrian Campbell, (Ingenia Consulting), Koen Lormans (iteam), and Arno Tolmeijer (Tomorrow s World). Frank Langeveld leaves the Foundation s Board Frank Langeveld from Atos Origin has decided to leave the Board of the ArchiMate Foundation because of his many obligations elsewhere. The other members of the Board want to express their gratitude to Frank for his valuable contribution in setting up the Foundation and guiding it through its first year! New Board Member: Dennis Kerssens Dennis Kerssens from Getronics PinkRoccade has succeeded Frank Langeveld as secretary and board member representing consultancy. He would like to introduce himself: I am a principal architect and business unit manager of the architecture service centre within Getronics PinkRoccade. I studied software engineering at the Vrije Universiteit with specializations in Economics and Psychology. As principal architect I consult organizations in applying architecture and governance, and support the introduction and implementations of architectures and governance, while as a Business Unit manager I have the supervision over architects within Getronics, operating in different market segments, like the sector public, finance, industry and health care. As a TOGAF and SCIA-certified IT-business architect I am specifically interested in Information-architecture and Business-IT-alignment, or in other words: how can organizations optimally use IT and how can IT optimally support the business. 3

4 Due to my interest in architecture frameworks I came across ArchiMate in the early days of its development, and made our company become member of the ArchiMate organization. Our company also adopted TOGAF as an architecture standard as one of our consultancy skills and we have our own TOGAF-best-practice MArch, of which I am one of the founders. I also wrote several publications and presented on several ICT forums. The latest publishing was 'TOGAF: a management guide', trying to explain to a CEO why architecture is interesting for him. As a board member I hope to add value to the development of ArchiMate and to the wider adoption of ArchiMate in the Netherlands and abroad. For more information: dennis.kerssens@archimate.org Booklet with Best Practices The ArchiMate working group 'Usage and Tools' have realized a new version of the booklet 'ArchiMate in Practice'. The book contains a summary and explanation of the ArchiMate modelling language and a collection of good practices for building good models. The book will be available in Dutch and English. The production costs have been sponsored by Atos Origin, BiZZdesign, and Ordina. Essent have made an important contribution by translating the book into English. Both the Dutch and English editions will be produced in full-colour print. Copies can be ordered via the website Moreover, the PDF will also be made available via the website. For more information: info@archimate.org ArchiMate at LAC 2007 At the Dutch National Architecture Congress LAC 2007 (21 22 November), the ArchiMate Foundation was present with a booth that attracted a lot of interest. Many architects wanted to know about ArchiMate and shared their thoughts. Moreover, in several presentations in the conference programme, ArchiMate featured prominently as the language of choice for enterprise architecture design. These include presentations by Boskalis, Sogeti, BiZZdesign, ICTU (a Dutch governmental development organization), and others. More information (including all presentations): 4

5 Events and Publications Enterprise Architecture Conference 2008 On June 9-11, 2008, the Enterprise Architecture Conference Europe 2008 (EAC 2008) is held in London, UK. The programme of the conference is currently being finalized. Marc Lankhorst from the ArchiMate Foundation will give an invited presentation about ArchiMate at the conference. Other featured speakers include John Zachman (Zachman International), Jeff Scott (Forrester Research), and David Roberstson (IMD, Lausanne). For more information: Dutch Masters Made in Holland Dutch Masters is published by the EVD, the Agency for International Business and Cooperation (part of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs), and provides information about interesting products, technologies and developments that have been home-grown in the Netherlands. Made in Holland 2008 offers an overview of the past year and supplements the ten Made in Holland sector specials published annually, each of which covers a different sector of Dutch commerce. These publications are distributed internationally via Dutch embassies and consulates, to promote Dutch commerce. The publication contains various interesting developments and visions from Dutch Masters such as the architect Rem Koolhaas, director of Schiphol airport Gerlach Cerfontaine, fashion designer Marlies Dekkers, and many more. A section titled Superintegration thanks to the Polder Model describes ArchiMate, and quotes Marc Lankhorst (Telematica Instituut) and Saco Bekius (Dutch Tax & Customs Administration), board members of the ArchiMate Foundation, on its development and use. 6 About ArchiMate Organizations need to adapt increasingly fast and respond flexibly to changing customer requirements and business goals. This need influences the entire chain of activities of a business, from the organizational structure to the network infrastructure. How can you control the impact of these changes? Architecture may be the answer. Architecture is a consistent whole of principles, methods and models that are used in the design and realization of organizational structure, business processes, information systems, and infrastructure. However, these domains are not approached in an integrated way, which makes it difficult to judge the effects of proposed changes. Every domain speaks its own language, draws its own models, and uses its own techniques and tools. Communication and decision making across domains is seriously impaired. ArchiMate offers this integration. With an architecture language and visualization techniques that picture these domains and their relations, ArchiMate provides the architect with instruments that support and improve the architecture process. Existing and emerging standards are used or integrated whenever possible. The ArchiMate Foundation The ArchiMate Foundation is the platform for everyone involved in the use and evolution of ArchiMate. Joining the ArchiMate Foundation means contributing to the convergence needed to reach the next level of professional development in our field. Your contribution means you want to actively support the use, dissemination, and further development of the ArchiMate standard. The ArchiMate Foundation is open to all organizations that apply enterprise architecture in practice or support its use and development.
