3 PETS ARE GOOD COMPANIONS FOR US BUT We see two kinds of animals around us so often: pets and animals on the streets. Pets are very important in our lives. They are beneficial for us because we relax, play, forget about our problems and enjoy them. Of course, we love our pets and know how to take care of them. We think that some people do not really care about them well and they do not have such responsibility, but they buy pets for some reasons and leave them alone one day. So, we should understand the great importance of owning a pet and caring about it. Many pet owners give their pets to the animal shelters or leave them on the streets because they cannot take care of them. So we started our research with a survey among our 4th and 5th grade friends at school. Then we searched the most common pets and how to care about them. When we cannot care about our pets, we send them to an animal shelter or to the streets. So, we tried to learn what happens to the animals on the streets. Does anybody care about their health? Are they alone? What happens to our pets in the animal shelters? For answers, we went to an animal shelter and interviewed the vet there.. 3

4 First of all, we made a survey in 4th and 5th grades and asked them about their pets. There are 196 students in these grades and 63 of them have pets at their houses. They have cats, dogs, turtles, birds, fish and hamsters. So we searched for the care of these animals. HOW TO CARE ABOUT OUR PETS DOGS They are one of the first domesticated animals. They have an important part in our lives. As our pets, we should feed them with ready-made food. It makes the dogs healthier and balanced. If we feed them with our own food, they will have a digestion problem. We should not give them variety meat and too much oily and spicy food. And we should take them to a vet regularly. We should take care of their cleaning and bath. Their vaccinations are also very important. If we do not care about them, they might have some illnesses. Their toilet routine is another responsibility. It needs time and patience. CATS Cats like to feel warmth and love from their owners. They generally live ten years but if we care about them well, they might live longer. We should feed them with ready-made food. They need a large space for their meals and toilet. They should have their own private space in our houses. They do not like to have a bath, so we should clean them with powder regularly. And we should comb, brush and cut their fur often. Their vaccination is another issue. We should take them to a vet and be careful about their health. FISH We need time to care of the fish at our houses. They need food twice or three times a day. But before the lights are on and off, we should wait for a few hours to feed them. A lot of food is dangerous for their health and it makes the acquarium dirty. Aquarium is very important for the fish. We should balance the temperature and choose the plants in it and some aquarium accessories correctly. Cleaning and changing the water are also very important for them. If the aquarium is dirty, they might have some illnesses and they might die. Everyday we should control our fish in the morning and at night. And we should use some medicine to avoid illnesses. BIRDS Birds are like humans. They need proteins, minerals, vegetables, corn and bread. They can eat fruits and our meals. But we should give them extra vitamins and minerals. Their enterons are sensitive. So they can be ill because of their food. They should not drink milk and eat sweets and chocolate. Their place in our houses is also important. They do not like to be alone. We should not leave them alone in a room. For example we can put them in our living room. We should be careful about their cleaning and clean their cages three times a week. 4

5 TURTLES Turtles eat both meat and vegetable. They like to eat bugs, worms, grapes, watermelon and tomato. But there are also ready-made food for them. If we have turtles at home, we can use them. They need proteins, calcium and phosphorus. They should live in a aquarium. The most important thing for our turtles is the cleaning of their water and the temperature of the water. It should be 27 C. They are sensitive to the microorganisms. If we are not careful about it, they might become blind or die. HAMSTERS They can live for only 3 years. They want to live alone. They love a quiet and dark life. They sleep in the morning and live at night. They store their food and exercise at night. So we should put a ferris wheel and some other toys in their cage because they are so active. We should also put sand in it for them. They eat both meat and vegetables. They like biscuits, cheese and sweets, so it is easy to feed them. We should put a water bottle in their cage. Cleaning is very important. We should clean their cage regularly and change their water. DIFFICULTIES OF HAVING A PET Time, love and effort are really necessary to care about a pet. Because we want it a lot in the beginning, we think that it is easy to do all of them. But sometimes doing the same things everyday is boring and difficult. We go to the school everyday. After school, we are tired and have a lot of homework. Our parents also work and come home late. So, it is difficult to spend time with our pets and take care of them. Also, our neighbours can sometimes complain about our pet s noise and it becomes a very big problem. So we have to leave it to an animal shelter or to the streets. Of course, these shelters care about the health and nutrition of our pets. Do you think it is enough for them? ANIMAL SHELTERS There are ownerless animals in the animal shelters. They live together in big cages. Some people work at these shelters. They look after the animals there. They feed, vaccinate and control them. But, according to our research, they cannot show their love to all animals there because there are a lot of animals in a shelter. They can just meet the basic needs of them. When we leave our pet to a shelter, they really feel bad. They think that their owners do not love them anymore. So, they do not eat or drink anything. In two months, they die. Here is our interview with the vet. 5

6 INTERVIEW WITH THE VET IN THE ANIMAL SHELTER THE VET: Welcome to our animal shelter. Are you students from Özel Ege Lisesi? ALL: Yes, we are. BERİL: Thank you for welcoming us. We are preparing a project about pets. So, we want to visit this shelter. ERDEM: We want to ask you some questions. THE VET: Sure, of course. BERK: When was this animal shelter founded? THE VET: It was founded 5 years ago in BERİL: How much do you spend for this shelter? THE VET: 60 or 70 thousand Turkish Liras in a month. AKİF: What kind of animals is there here? THE VET: There are stray animals. We have just dogs. POYRAZ: What do you do for them? THE VET: We feed them with ready-made food. We care about their health. BERK: How many dogs are there? THE VET: There are 340 dogs here. 30 of them are puppies. ERDEM: Do people buy dogs from here? THE VET: We don t sell them. Everyone above 16 years old can take a dog from here. The parents take dogs for their children. Shepherds take them for their job. BEGÜM: How do you catch them? THE VET: We have a team for this job. Our team is catching the stray animals on the streets. AKİF: Do you love these animals? THE VET: It is our duty to care for them. It is impossible to love all of them. POYRAZ: Do people bring their pets here? THE VET: Yes, they do. They live in apartments and they cannot take care of their pets. It is difficult to care about them. BEGÜM: What happens to them? THE VET: They certainly die. They don t eat anything because they miss their owners. They really feel very bad. 6

7 CONCLUSION Consequently, after we saw the animals in the shelter and learnt the facts about them, we understood the importance of owning a pet better. We know that as children, we all love animals and want to have a pet at our houses. We should realize that owning and loving an animal are not the same things. We can love animals and treat them well outside. But when we have them at home, we may not care about them well for some reasons. We should understand that they need both love and care. Now we know that before we buy a pet, we should think of all things about it. For this reason, we offer you a few questions. If you want to buy a pet, you can use them to understand your circumstances. Do you really love animals? Do your parents really love animals? Are you a responsible person? Do you have enough spare time? Do you have enough money? Are you too tired after school? Are you too busy after school? Do your parents work hard? Are your parents too tired after work? 7
