2 2 Course Topic: Beginning Poetry Title: Emerging Poets: A Way with Words Instructor: Leasa M. Codner Class Size: 18 Grade Level: 2 Prerequisites: None Note: My online course will involve discussion participation and 2-part assignments during the two weeks required for this course project. In other words, both Week 1 and Week 2 will include discussion participation on a specific topic, Assignment Part 1 (the creation of a stylespecific poem), and, Assignment Part 2 (collaboration via group wikis during the drafting, editing, and revising stages of that style-specific, poem-writing process). Week 1 Objectives Students will: (1) Practice poetry writing skills such as rhyming, descriptive vocabulary (sound and imagery), and rhythm. (2) Identify unique characteristics of Jack Prelutsky s style of poetry writing (word play, synonym silliness, and object observations). (3) Create a More Than? descriptive poem that displays the rhythmic, rhyming, and descriptive vocabulary style of Jack Prelutsky. (4) Write to, edit, save content on, and post comments to their collaborative group wiki pages. (5) Collaborate with classmates through a group wiki during the editing, revising, and publishing phases of the poetry writing process. Discussion: Jack Prelutsky likes to plays around with language when he writes poetry. In his audio recording of the poem, Louder Than a Clap of Thunder, Mr. Prelutsky has fun using words that create sounds and images in your brain. Think about the images and sounds you experienced as you listened to his poem, and then answer the following questions: How does Jack Prelutsky play with the words in the poem you listened to? How will you play with words to create a poem similar in style? Post your answer in the Discussion Forum by Day 3 of Week 1. Respond to at least two classmates by Day 5 of Week 1.

3 3 * Week 1 Assignment Part 1: Writing a More Than? Descriptive Poem Think about things that are unusually loud, tall, large, bright, or quiet. Some examples include a fire alarm, a skyscraper, a bull elephant, a lightning flash, and an owl flying. Make a list of other examples you can think of as well. Download the More Than? Descriptive Poetry worksheet and reread Jack Prelutsky s descriptive More Than? poem, Louder Than a Clap of Thunder. Use your list of unusual things and the More Than? Descriptive Poetry worksheet to create your own descriptive poem similar to Jack Prelutsky s poem. * Week 1 Assignment Part 2: Collaborating during the Poetry Writing Process Use your completed More Than? Descriptive Poetry worksheet to help you type your poem onto your group wiki page. Make sure to save your work. Visit the wiki pages of your group members and critique each other's work as you edit and revise your poems. Week 2 Objectives Students will: (1) Practice poetry writing skills such as alliteration, rhyming, and rhythm. (2) Identify unique characteristics of Jean Marzollo s style of poetry writing (riddle poem in aabb pattern, punctuation placement, and rap rhythm). (3) Compare and contrast the poetry writing styles of Jean Marzollo and Jack Prelutsky. (4) Create an I Spy Riddle poem in the poetry writing style of Jean Marzollo. (5) Write to, edit, save content on, and post comments to their collaborative group wiki pages. (6) Collaborate with classmates through a group wiki during the editing, revising, and publishing phases of the poetry writing process. Discussion: In the interview with Jean Marzollo, you learned about her riddle-writing style from the popular I Spy riddle book series. After reading samples of I Spy Riddles published by your peers, you saw how alliteration and poem structure are also important when creating a riddle poem. Think about the ways Ms. Marzollo uses alliteration, rhyme and rhythm to help you have fun finding objects being described in each riddle. How is Ms. Marzollo s poetry writing style similar to that of Jack Prelutsky? How are their poetry writing styles different? Post your answer in the Discussion Forum by Day 3 of Week 2. Respond to at least two classmates by Day 5 of Week 2.

4 4 * Week 2 Assignment Part 1: Writing an I Spy Riddle Poem Review Jean Marzollo s Hints for Writing an I Spy Riddle. Then, download the I Spy My Spy Riddle worksheet. On the worksheet, draw a picture full of images to use when you create your own I Spy Riddle. You can also choose to download the I Spy My Spy Cutouts page and use the pictures in it to create your picture on the worksheet. After completing your picture, write a rhyming riddle to go with it. Remember to pay attention to the placement of your rhyming words, your punctuation use, and your 4-beat rhythm. * Week 2 Assignment Part 2: Collaborating during the Poetry Writing Process Use your completed I Spy My Spy Riddle worksheet to help you type your poem onto your group wiki page. Make sure to save your work. Visit the wiki pages of your group members and critique each other's work as you edit and revise your poems.
