2 INTRODUCTION Senstronics Pressure Transducers are for use in applications which require pressure measurement. They provide a linear electrical output proportional to the applied pressure and is intended for use with liquid or gas media, provided that it is compatible with 17-4PH Stainless Steel. The following instructions have been compiled with great care, but it is not possible to consider all applications. These installation & operating instructions should meet the needs of most pressure measurement applications, but if questions remain regarding specific applications, further information can be obtained from Senstronics Sales Department (details on front page). CERTIFICATION Senstronics Pressure Transducers are designed and manufactured in accordance with Sound Engineering Practice as Defined by the Pressure Equipment Directive. All products that are CE Marked with CE0038 comply with the following Directives. 2004/108/EC: EMC Directive 1907/2006: REACH Compliance 2011/65/EU: RoHS Compliance 97/23/EC: Pressure Equipment Directive (1999) 2014/68/EU: Pressure Equipment Directive (2014) HAZARDOUS PRODUCTS The Consumer Protection Act of 1987, Section 6 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1988 require that we advise recipients and users of our products of any potential hazards associated with their storage, handling or use. Products which are supplied per this bulletin may be classified as Electrical, Electro-Mechanical and Electronic equipment. These products are tested and supplied in accordance with our published specifications or individual special requirements that are agreed in writing at time of order. They are constructed so as not to affect adversely the safety of persons and property installed, maintained and used by qualified personnel, in the application for which they were designed and manufactured. PACKAGING Inspect packaging & transducer for signs of damage during transport. Any obvious damage should be reported to Senstronics & the transport company immediately. Retain all packaging for future reference, including thread protection cap (if applicable). Check Contents are as below: Pressure Transducer complete with thread protection cap (if applicable) Operating Instructions PRODUCT LABEL Please check according to label details below: 1051-PED-INS Issue 1 Page 2 of 8
3 The equipment is designed and manufactured to: GENERAL PROVISIONS Avoid physical injury or other harm which may be caused by direct or indirect contact. Ensure that excess surface temperature of accessible parts or radiation which would cause a danger is not produced. Eliminate non-electrical dangers which are revealed by experience. Ensure that foreseeable conditions of overload will not give rise to dangerous situations. The pressure sensing diaphragm has been rated for 10 million cycles over the life of the product. Do not exceed the manufacturers specifications. Be mounted in any orientation via a threaded port. Withstand a side load (acting perpendicular to the mounted axis) of 100 Newton at the end of the mating connector. This is to cover accidental physical abuse during installation or during product life. Provided that: The Operating Pressure is not exceeded. If the operating pressure is exceeded, the life of the transducer may be reduced and mechanical or electrical failure may occur. Both static and dynamic over-pressuring must be considered, particularly in hydraulic system applications. Hydraulic pressure fluctuations can have very high and rapid pressure spikes, as in a water hammer effect. The high pressure versions have a snubber feature built-in to reduce the peak pressure applied to the transducer. The standard product does not employ this feature. If system pressure pulses are expected, choose a transducer with a proof pressure rating high enough to allow operation at the highest expected pressure spikes. Pressure media must be compatible with the transducer wetted parts o 17-4PH (UNS17400 / SUS 630 / AISI 630) Stainless Steel. o Viton (FKM) O-Ring / Seal (where applicable) The Pressure media must be non-abrasive & non-corrosive to prevent damage to the transducer. Liquid must not be allowed to freeze in the pressure port. TOOLS REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION: Transducer Mounting: Wrench 22mm or 27mm depending on hex Industrial Form C Connector Mounting: Screwdriver Tapered Threads: Suitable sealing compound or PTFE Tape. MECHANICAL INSTALLATION The product must not subjected to high temperatures from soldering, brazing, welding or temperatures above or below the specified operating temperatures. Avoid mounting the transmitter near a source of heat / cold which is liable to create a temperature gradient across the instrument. If this is unavoidable, use a heat shield to deflect uneven radiation or wrap the transmitter in insulation so that an even temperature is assumed throughout. Prior to installation, check the O-ring (where applicable) for damage. If the O-ring shows signs of damage or ageing, it must be replaced with a new O-ring. It is recommended that a new O-ring is used whenever the transducer is removed from the application. This applies to thread tape or sealant on tapered threads. Install the transducer into the port before connecting the electrical connector PED-INS Issue 1 Page 3 of 8
4 Do NOT use the connector or other additional features on the transducer body to install or remove the transducer. Screw or unscrew the transducer using the pressure port hexagon flats ONLY and observe the prescribed torque (Nm) in the table below. (2-3 Turns From Finger Tight) WARNING! : The Transducer should only be removed from the system, once the system has been vented. The transducer must not be used to vent the system. The electrical connector should be removed prior to the transducer being removed. ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION To ensure proper environmental sealing and electrical connections when using a connector, follow the connector manufacturer s installation guidelines. All terminal cavities must be sealed using the correct wire gauge and seal combination. If only two leads are used, any additional terminal cavities should be sealed per the connector manufacturer s installation guide. Senstronics recommends using a crimping tool for crimping wires to the connector terminals. Contact the individual connector manufacturer for connector wiring. Ensure the connector wiring matches the label. Connect the product to a DC voltage supply. With no pressure applied, turn on the power and check the output is functioning PED-INS Issue 1 Page 4 of 8
5 Voltage Applications: The following schematic is applicable for any voltage output only pull-down configuration shown. External load (RL1) is optional and can be connected between Vout1 and EITHER supply rail. With 0V offsets, pull-up resistors cannot be used. RETURN TO FACTORY: PLEASE NOTE: To comply with Health and Safety requirements, the instrument must be clean and safe to handle and accompanied by a formal statement to that effect duly signed by an authorised officer of the Company. Any instrument returned without certification will be quarantined and no action will occur until cleared. It may ultimately be returned to you and subject to a transportation charge. MAINTENANCE Routine Inspection: Not required except for periodic inspection of the cable and connector to ensure that these are neither damaged nor softened by incompatible liquid. If the Transducer is removed from the pressure port, it is recommended that the seal (where applicable) be inspected for damage, if there is any sign of damage or if in doubt, the seal should be replaced with a new seal. The seal must be compatible with the media. It is also recommended that in the case of tapered threads that the sealing tape always be replaced. STORAGE & DISPOSAL When storing or disposing of transducer, take precautions with remaining media ~ it may be hazardous or toxic. Refit thread protection cap during storage periods. Dispose of transducer & packaging materials in accordance with local waste treatment disposal regulations of the country or region to which the instrument is supplied PED-INS Issue 1 Page 8 of 8
