2 Holy Cross Hospital Facts Holy Cross Hospital is a faith-based, mission-driven, not-for-profit teaching hospital One of 43 hospitals that are a part of Trinity Health At 450 beds, HCH is the second largest hospital in the state of Maryland The only hospital in Maryland to receive the Workplace Excellence Award from the Maryland Work- Life Alliance every year since 1999

5 We live up to our Mission The leaders at Holy Cross Hospital are sincere in their sense of responsibility to steward the resources entrusted to them to invest in the community's benefit. In a four year span between 2002 and 2006, Holy Cross Hospital (HCH) provided more than $76 million in community benefit, $32 million of which went toward financial assistance.

6 Our Health Centers provide primary health care only to uninsured adults The Health Centers in Silver Spring and Gaithersburg serve approximately 20,000 patients per year

7 While we deliver more than 10,000 babies a year, they come into the world one at a time. Our mission is to treat each family, each patient, each experience with dignity and respect.

8 Volunteers provide valuable service throughout the hospital. Our nearly 400 Volunteers contributed 71,700 hours last year.

9 Opportunities Patient Contact Public Administrative You will choose your assignment after speaking with the director of Volunteer Services.

10 Volunteer Basics We ask for a 100 hour commitment. Your department will be counting on your help. Please notify them (not us) if you are unable to come for the day.

11 What we cannot offer A guarantee you will get the volunteer position you want at the time you want it (depends on availability) A guarantee you will find a paid job as a result of volunteering Contact with nursery babies or NICU Sterile Processing positions at this time Clerical work available only in the Pharmacy and only during business hours

12 Volunteer Basics Dress Code Should be Business Casual, which includes khakis pants, or slacks other than sweats or jeans.

13 The badge should always be worn at chest height, so that visitors and patients can easily read your name

14 Standard precautions Wash hands for at least 15 seconds before and after each patient encounter. Use waterless, alcohol based hand sanitizers to clean hands when there is no visible soilage. Do not wear artificial nails when in direct contact with patients, their food, medications, and sterile equipment. The single most important practice in the prevention of infection in patients and in healthcare workers.

17 Holy Cross Hospital is a Non-Smoking Facility No smoking on hospital property, not even in your car. Do not come smelling of tobacco Please do not smoke in front of our neighbors homes

18 Volunteers sign in on a touch screen monitor

19 Know the evacuation plan for your area it should be posted near your work area. Know at least two exit routes out of the unit and out of the hospital. Know the location of the fire alarm pull stations in your work area. Know the location and type of all fire extinguishers in your work area. Pull the alarm box and call extension 211 if you see a fire. Fire Safety

20 In the Case of Fire RACE Rescue remove patients Alarm pull alarm, call 211 to confirm location Contain close the door Extinguish Evacuate horizontally

21 Remember the PASS word: 1) Keep your back to a clear escape route, 2) Stand back 6 to 8 feet from the fire, 3) Then >>:

22 PULL the pin

23 AIM LOW at the base of the fire

24 SQUEEZE the lever

25 SWEEP from side to side

26 What s A Fire Door? Fire doors are designed to withstand fire, heat and smoke for a period of 20- minutes to 3 hours.

27 STROKE AWARENESS Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke includes SUDDEN: numbness/weakness one part or side of the body I.e. face, arm, or leg confusion, trouble speaking or understanding problems seeing in one or both eyes dizziness, loss of balance or trouble walking severe headache with no known cause decrease in level of consciousness www. American stroke association.com

28 STROKE AWARENESS F- (FACIAL)- Ask to the person to smile to assess for facial droop Does one side of the face drop? FACIAL DROOP

29 STROKE AWARENESS A- (ARM)-Ask the person to raise both arms to assess for a drift. Does one arm drift downward? DRIFT

30 STROKE AWARENESS * S- (SPEECH)- Ask the person to repeat a sentence (It is a rainy day) *Are the words slurred? *Can the person repeat the sentence correctly?

31 STROKE AWARENESS T-(TIME)- If the patient or an employee shows any of these symptoms call 211 for the STAT TEAM IMMEDIATELY! The STAT team MD will assess the patient to see if this is a potential stroke patient.

32 STROKE AWARENESS REMEMBER TIME IS BRAIN: ACT FAST AT THE FIRST SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE CALL 211!

33 Be aware of these color codes and what they mean Code Yellow A natural or man-made disaster has occurred in the community. Report to your area supervisor You may be called upon to help in your area or deployed elsewhere. Code Pink The abduction of an infant or child. Remain alert and observant of any suspicious person(s), activities, or vehicles that could be involved in an infant or child abduction Immediately call security at x7070.
