5 PROCEDURES FOR THE PLACEMENT OF STUDENTS IN ENGLISH B English B in the Secondary at OIS consists of two parts, namely English B core and English B extension. Depending on the student's level of language acquisition, students who require English B will be placed (based on the recommendations of the teachers) in the following courses : YEAR LEVEL CORE EXTENSION Year 10 Year 9 Year 8* Year 7* * Students in Years will be placed in either both core and extension or just extension depending on their level of language acquisition. The students enrolled in the core programme will transfer to English A once their language skills have improved to the point that they can access the English A curriculum. They will, however, continue in the extension programme for the duration of the academic year. 1. Returning Students : Enrolment in the appropriate English courses for the next year will be decided by the contact teachers (based on the recommendations of the subject teachers) at the end of the present academic year and class lists will be submitted to the Secondary Administrative Assistant during the end of the year planning days for entry into the database during the summer. 2. New Applicants : Based on the results of their admissions exams and the recommendations of the English B teacher(s) students if qualified for admission to the school will be automatically placed in either both core and extension or only extension before the start of the school year. 3. New Students : All new students not enrolled in the core course will be tested during the first week by the English A teacher(s) and based on their recommendations, the appropriate course adjustments will be made and students and parents will be informed by the student's contact teacher. Please note that enrolment in the English B extension course is for a full academic year and takes the place of another language in the student's timetable. Moreover, it is the responsibility of the school to determine the appropriate language courses for all students enrolled at Oslo International School.
6 PROCEDURES REGARDING PLACEMENT OF STUDENTS IN SUPPORT FOR LEARNING The Support for Learning program serves students with mild learning difficulties and/or exceptionalities with targeted support of up to 2.5 hours (4 lessons) per week and assists class and subject teachers to ensure that students receive the appropriate teaching and learning experiences. Support provided ranges from indirect (consultation and collaboration) to direct (in-class and pull-out) services for students. An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is developed in consultation with SfL teachers, class/subject teachers, parents, and students to identify the learning goals and accommodations for students in the program. OIS Support for Learning Program Overview: Students with Special Needs Our school is able to admit and serve students with mild learning difficulties who demonstrate the ability to access and benefit from our regular curriculum and program with limited assistance from our Support for Learning Program. Continuum of Service Model The Support for Learning Program provides a continuum of services, both indirect and direct to support eligible students. Indirect services include consultation and collaboration between class/subject teachers and Support for Learning teachers. Direct services involve Support for Learning teachers in a pull-out model for up to 4 lessons per week. Students receiving direct services from the SfL program need to have a documented learning difficulty or have received a recommendation for services through a Student Support Team (SST) Meeting. Students receiving services will have an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) in place. Students who, after consultation are seen to need more than four lessons of support per week, may receive additional direct support paid for by their parents through an Additional Services Contract. Assistance Process Secondary: A teacher with concerns about the progress/functioning of a student discusses their concerns with the student's contact teacher. The contact teacher then completes a Support for Learning Assistance Referral Form and submits it to the SfL Teacher after consulting with all of the student's subject teachers. The SfL teacher then follows-up (Consultation/Collaboration) with the contact/class teacher and counsellor. At this point they collect additional information and an SST Meeting will be held to suggest possible interventions or strategies. A plan of action will be agreed upon and implemented with follow up by the contact/class teacher and/or parent(s). In addition, recommendations may be made for assessment or direct services. NB : All placement decisions need to be approved by the Principal or the Deputy Principals before action is taken.
7 PROCEDURES REGARDING PLACEMENT OF STUDENTS IN THE SECONDARY NORWEGIAN COURSES The Norwegian Programme at OIS consists of three different courses, Norwegian A, Norwegian B and Beginner's Norwegian*. Based on their specific language backgrounds students will be enrolled in the following courses in the Secondary : 1. New students : All new students admitted to OIS for Years 7-10, who already have had Norwegian as a language of use either at home or school will be placed in Norwegian A. All new students admitted to OIS for Years 7-10, who have previously followed a programme for learning Norwegian as a foreign language will be placed in Norwegian B. New students admitted to OIS in Years 7 and 9, who have no previous knowledge of Norwegian, will be placed in Beginner's Norwegian. New students admitted to OIS in Year 10, who have no previous knowledge of Norwegian, will be placed in Norwegian Studies. 2. Returning students : Apart from the Beginner's Norwegian students, who will be placed in Norwegian B after completion of the 2 Year Beginner's course, all students will continue in the courses into which they were initially placed. * Beginner's Norwegian is a 2 Year course of studies and upon completion students are either placed in Norwegian B or can choose to study Norwegian B as part of their Diploma Programme.
