5 1 Introduction In addition to its previous function - as a data CD on which you can find the update repository with the update data for the GlobalFlash tool - the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite Update CD for Windows now has another function: From CD version you can boot a managed server from the CD and use an additional update function. The "Bootable Update CD" function of PRIMERGY ServerView Suite Update CD for Windows is an update management component of the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite. It enables the firmware for various server components and the server BIOS to be updated locally on the managed server before installing the operating system. Interaction of Update Management components PRIMERGY ServerView Update Management provides a convenient method of searching for and loading current versions of firmware, BIOS, drivers and ServerView/ GlobalFlash agents and thus of updating servers in the network. For these tasks, the Primergy ServerView Suite provides Bootable Update CD and the Download Manager, GlobalFlash Tool and PrimeUp software tools: To update before installation of the operating system: Locally on the server: You can use the Bootable Update CD to update the firmware for various server components and the server BIOS. To update installed servers: Locally on the server: You can use the Bootable Update CD to update the firmware for various server components and the server BIOS. You can use PrimeUp to update drivers and ServerView agents using a command line interface. PrimeUp can also be used in a scripting environment. Bootable Update CD 5

6 Target groups and objective of this manual Introduction Over a network: You control the updating of monitored servers and server groups centrally from a management server. This allows you to remotely keep a large number of servers up to date. The objective is successful, cost-effective updating of your PRIMERGY servers to meet your needs within minimum interruption of operation. The Download Manager uses user defined time-controlled download jobs on the FTS web server to search for the most recent update data and loads the information files and the necessary update data to the central management server in your network. You can use the GlobalFlash Tool to update firmware, BIOS, drivers and ServerView/GlobalFlash agents on the managed servers from a central management server. This manual describes firmware updates for various server components and the server BIOS using Bootable Update CD. 1.1 Target groups and objective of this manual This manual is aimed as system administrators, network administrators and service professions who have a sound knowledge of hardware and software. This symbol highlights important information and tips. italic fixed font semi-bold fixed font <abc> [Key symbols] Table 1: Notational conventions This symbol refers to a step that you must carry out in order to continue with the procedure. Commands, menu items, names of buttons, options, variables, file names and path names are written in italic letters in text. System output is written using a fixed font. Commands to be entered through the keyboard are written in a semi-bold fixed font. Angle brackets are used to enclose variables which are to be replaced by actual values. Keys are presented according to their representation on the keyboard. If capital letters are to be entered explicitly, then the Shift key is shown, e.g. [SHIFT] - [A] for A. If two keys need to be pressed at the same time, then this is shown by placing a hyphen between the two key symbols. 9 2 The Bootable Update CD use The PRIMERGY ServerView Suite Update CD for Windows has the following content: If you are reading the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite Update CD for Windows as a data CD on a system: Update repository with update data for the GlobalFlash Tool Information files for Bootable Update CD If you are booting from the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite Update CD for Windows: Bootable Update CD function (including part of the information files for Bootable Update CD) 2.1 Information files If you are reading the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite Update CD for Windows as a data CD on a system: Directory of supported PRIMERGY systems and the supported components: Open the file Supported PRIMERGY Systems.htm in a browser. The PRIMERGY systems supported by the current version of the Bootable Update CD and the supported components are listed in this file. List of updated firmware for each PRIMERGY system: Open the fileindex.htm in a browser. The file index.htm lists all supported PRIMERGY systems. Click on the desired system. All flash-compatible components for the selected system are listed. For each component, the version of its firmware to be used for the update is specified. Bootable Update CD 9

10 Information files The Bootable Update CD use Example: Figure 1: Components that can be updated for PRIMERGY TX150 S3 and their firmware version If you are booting from the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite Update CD for Windows: List of updated firmware for each PRIMERGY system: Boot from the Bootable Update CD. A selection menu is displayed (see figure Selection menu for Bootable Update CD on page 12). Use the arrow keys to select the menu option 6. List the new firmware versions for this system and press the [Enter] key. The Bootable Update CD detects the type of the PRIMERGY system. All components that can be updated for the selected system are listed. For each component, the version of its firmware to be used for the update is specified. I Selecting this menu option brings up the command prompt. You cannot then return to the selection menu. To call up the selection menu again, boot the server again from the Bootable Update CD. Information about the other options in the selection menu can be found in section Insert the Bootable Update CD on page Bootable Update CD

11 The Bootable Update CD use System requirements 2.2 System requirements Supported PRIMERGY systems The PRIMERGY systems that the Bootable Update CD supports can be found in the information files on the CD (see section Information files on page 9). System requirements I Pay attention to any additional information on the Bootable Update CD (menu option 1 General Info in selection menu, see section Start the Bootable Update CD - Selection menu on page 12). If the system has several optical drives, the Bootable Update CD can only be booted from the primary/master IDE drive. The Bootable Update CD requires fixed drive assignments for the RamDisk. It cannot therefore be used on systems with a FAT partition installed (e.g. Novell NetWare). Bootable Update CD 11

12 Insert the Bootable Update CD The Bootable Update CD use 2.3 Insert the Bootable Update CD Start the Bootable Update CD - Selection menu Boot from the Bootable Update CD. A selection menu is displayed: Figure 2: Selection menu for Bootable Update CD 1. General Hints Press the [Enter] key. Important information, dependencies and restrictions for use of the Bootable Update CD are displayed. I Check these details before you start an update routine. Selecting this menu option brings up the command prompt. You cannot then return to the selection menu. To call up the selection menu again, boot the server again from the Bootable Update CD. 2. TX150S2, ECONEL 40, ECONEL 200 (Update) 3. Other PRIMERGY systems (Update) You can use these menu options to update the firmware and the server BIOS - see section Updating the firmware and BIOS on page List the new firmware versions for this system The Bootable Update CD detects the type of the PRIMERGY system. 12 Bootable Update CD

All components that can be updated for the selected system are listed. For each component, the version of its firmware to be used for the update is specified. I Selecting this menu option brings up the command prompt. You cannot then return to the selection menu. To call up the selection menu again, boot the server again from the Bootable Update CD Updating the firmware and BIOS If you want to update the firmware and BIOS for a server, select one of the following two options in the selection menu, depending on the system: For a PRIMERGY TX150 S2, Econel 40 or Econel 200: 2. TX150S2, ECONEL 40, ECONEL 200 (Update) For another PRIMERGY server: 3. Other PRIMERGY systems (Update) In the selection menu, use the arrow keys to select the appropriate option and press the [Enter] key. The update routine then updates the components in the order that they appear in the information files (see section Information files on page 9). If a component does not exist in the PRIMERGY system, the update routine continues with the next component in the list. I You may need to restart the server several times during the update process. The selection menu is displayed again after restarting. In such cases, proceed as follows: Bootable Update CD 13

14 Insert the Bootable Update CD The Bootable Update CD use Restart the update process by selecting the same menu option again and pressing the [Enter] key. I Make sure that you select the same menu option each time. A system message appears to inform you that the update routine has been completed successfully: Figure 3: Message for successful completion of update routine Restart the system. I The update routine ends in the command prompt. You cannot then return to the selection menu.
