Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that forms when naturally occuring uranium decays. Radon gas is found in rocks and soil and it enters homes through holes and cracks in the foundation. Prolonged exposure to radon levels above 4 picocuries per liter of air significantly increases risk of lung cancer, even for nonsmokers. US EPA considers radon the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer. 2 Home Repair Program People Working Cooperatively Emergency home repairs are PWC s most crucial service, ensuring the safety and security of its clients. Services are limited to two emergencies a year, with an emergency being defined as a situation that threatens a client s well-being. Critical home repairs are designed to correct major defects threatening the safety of the occupants, integrity of the structure, general functionality of the house, and/or mobility of the occupants. Another important PWC service solution is offered through their volunteer department. Volunteers can help with simple home maintenance tasks that are routine yet difficult for those with a disability. Must be a homeowner and at or below 50% of area median income to qualify. Targeted to people 60 years of age and over in Greene, Preble and Montgomery Counties. Emergency home repairs: Including broken water pipes; lack of heat; safety problems, such as electrical hazards; leaking hot water heater; only toilet in the home not working. Critical home repairs: Examples include, but are not limited to: roof replacements; plumbing system repairs; electrical upgrades; furnace replacements; accessibility modifications. Home maintenance: simple tasks that can be performed by volunteers. Contact PWC Contact: Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP) Eligibility Community Action Partnership of the Greater Dayton Area No-cost energy assistance program designed to increase the energy efficiency of dwellings owned or occupied by income-eligible Ohioans, reduce participants' household energy expenditures and improve participants health and safety. Any individual, homeowner or renter with an income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. HWAP providers give priority to people over the age of 60 and those with disabilities. 3 Modifications for Mobility (OHTF) People Working Cooperatively Modifications for Mobility is a critical program for PWC, targeting complicated home modification projects that are typically too expensive for its low-income, disabled clients. Modifications assist some of PWC s most vulnerable clients, improving their daily mobility and independence. Must be a homeowner to qualify. Income qualifications based on 35% of area median income. Depending on your location and your specific needs, some of the services you could receive are: handicapped-accessible ramps; bathroom modifications; kitchen modifications; grab bars. No Seasonal Safe at Home and NeighborCare Rebuilding Together Dayton (RTD) Seasonal Safe at Home is a year-round program (Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn) that is volunteer-driven and provides assistance for small projects in low-income neighborhoods or for low-income resident homeowners 60 years old and/or disabled. NeighborCare provides minor, critical home repairs by skilled tradespeople throughout the year at no cost to senior homeowners. Montgomery County resident. Seasonal Safe at Home assists lowincome resident homeowners. NeighborCare is targeted to lowincome senior resident homeowners (60 years old and older). Seasonal Safe at Home assists with seasonal maintenance and repair projects. NeighborCare assists with small projects such as exterior garage or house painting, landscaping, attic or basement cleaning, and litter cleanup. City Level Programs Dayton To obtain a loan, homeowner-occupants must be unable to obtain affordable credit elsewhere and have very low incomes (below 50 percent of the area median income). Loans are at 1% interest with up to 20 years to repay. Grants are only available to homeowners who are 62 years old or older and cannot repay a Section 504 Loan. Funds may only be used for repairs or improvements to remove health and safety hazards, or to complete repairs to make the dwelling accessible for household members with disabilities. Loans and Grants Hillsboro Office Yes National Rebuilding Day Rebuilding Together Dayton Dedicated to rehabilitating owner-occupied homes for low-income homeowners at no cost. National Rebuilding Day takes place once per year in April. Rebuilding Together Dayton selects projects from nominations by neighborhood groups, churches, neighborhood development corporations, city housing inspectors, priority boards and individuals. Applicants must own their own homes in the City of Dayton and have a combined household income of less than 80% of the area median income. Homeowners who are elderly and/or disabled and have lived in their homes for a minimum of 10 years are the top priority for receiving services.
