2 IMPACT OF NATIONAL LABORATORIES ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CRITICAL TO US GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS National Laboratories provide unique facilities and infrastructure to conduct fundamental and applied research The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory is one of two third generation X-ray synchrotrons which produce brilliant X-rays to conduct science at an unprecedented level. The APS has the only nano X-ray beam (~ 30 nm in diameter) operating in the world The APS is a user facility used by scientists from National Laboratories, Academia and Industry Part of the research done by Americans Brian Kobilka and Robert Lefkowitz on G-protein-coupled receptors at the APS resulted in their being awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

US scientists are now being hired in Singapore, both in Academia and Industry. China is now hiring US scientist for faculty positions (example, Soochow University in Suzhou, China, as witnessed by O. Auciello during a 2011 visit). Europe is the center and Leader for High Energy Physics, since the CERN accelerator is the only one with the energy to enable the next generation of discoveries (The Higgs Boson was discovered this year in CERN, confirming the long standing theory by Higgs, who predicted its existence). Brazil is investing hundred of millions of dollars in science and technology and its one of the three emerging technological powers worldwide, jointly with China and India.
