5 BEFORE YOU BEGIN... BEFORE YOU BEGIN... These instructions describe the operating procedures for the Canon Microfilm Scanner 500. After you set up the unit, keep this manual in a convenient location so you can find it when you need it. Important features Saves space The economical design of this compact film scanner requires less space on your desk or work table. Automatic film detection The unit automatically detects whether film is positive or negative. You can use both film types interchangeably, with no need to change device settings. Optional carriers in various formats Optional carriers offer support for a wide variety of film types, including microfiche, aperture cards, and film rolls. Easy operation Keyboard and operation panel provide easy control of screen adjustments, zoom, border deletion, and other operating functions. Easy expansion With the installation of an SCSI board (sold separately), you can connect the unit to a personal computer and for advanced operations like CAR detection and image transfers. 1

To ensure safe, efficient operation, read the following precautions and recommendations before you choose a location and set up the system. ;;;;;; 10cm ;;;;;; 50cm ;;;;;; ;;;;;; ;;;;;; 10cm Choosing a safe location To ensure adequate space for ventilation, operation, and maintenance, make sure there is enough space around the system on all sides. To prevent overheating, never block the ventilation slots. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. When exposure to sunlight is unavoidable, install curtains to protect the unit. Avoid a dusty location. Dust can adversely affect the internal parts of the unit. Do not set up and use the unit in a location where the unit is exposed to water, steam, or high humidity. Keep all liquids away from the unit. Avoid areas like laboratories where fumes from ammonia, acetone, or other volatile chemicals are present. Never use any kind of volatile, flammable spray near the unit. 3

8 Work safely! Never set up the unit in an area where flammable substances like alcohol, thinner, or other organic chemicals are present. Select a flat, stable, surface that can support the 26 kg (57.2 lb.) weight of the unit. Choose an area that is free of excessive vibration. Avoid a location subject to sudden or wide changes in temperature. Condensation inside the unit can cause poor print quality. Use the unit in a location within these ranges for temperature and humidity. Temperature Humidity 10 C to 32.5 C (50 F to 90.5 F) 10% to 85% RH Do not place the unit near large speakers, a radio, a television, or any other type of equipment that can generate a strong magnetic field. 4

Europe (other areas) 120V, Hz V, Hz With no variation more than 10% above the rated power on the unit label. ; ; ; ; ; ; If you have any questions about the power source at your work site, contact your supplier or the power company. The unit should have an independent power source that is not shared with any other electrical device. If you have to use an extension cord or power strip, make sure the total ampere rating for all the equipment does not exceed the ampere rating of the extension cord. Do not place anything on the power cord, and do not locate the unit where people working around the unit will walk on the cord. Do not bundle the power cord or wrap it around an object like a table or chair leg. The area around the unit should be clear of all obstacles. In case of an emergency, you should be able to reach the power source quickly to unplug the cord. To remove the power cord from the power outlet, grasp the head of the plug firmly to remove it. Never pull on the cord to remove the plug from the power outlet. Never touch the power cord with wet hands. 5

10 Work safely! Important warnings Before you use the equipment, make sure you and your co-workers read the following warnings about using this equipment. PAY ATTENTION TO THESE WARNINGS! FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE WARNINGS COULD RESULT IN INJURY FROM FIRE OR ELECTRICAL SHOCK! Use only the power cord supplied with the unit. Never disassemble the unit. There are no user servicable parts inside the unit. If you detect strange noises, odors, or smoke around the unit, turn the power switch off immediately, remove the plug from the power source and call for service. Handle the unit carefully to avoid dropping it, hitting it, or subjecting it to strong shock or vibration. If something collides with the unit or hits it, turn it off immediately, remove the plug from the power source, and call for service. Before you move the unit even a short distance, turn off the power switch and remove the plug from the power source. Never place anything on top of the unit, especially a liquid container like a flower vase. When you are working around the unit, avoid wearing loose fitting jewelry like bracelets and necklaces. Keep the work area clear of metal clips, pins, paper clips and other types of fasteners. If something falls into the unit accidentally, turn the unit power switch off, unplug the power cord from the power source, and call for service. To avoid possible injury from falling objects, never place heavy objects on the unit. If the unit is not to be used for a long period, turn the power switch off and unplug the power cord from the power source. Avoid touching internal parts when you perform routine cleaning or maintenance like changing the lamp. Some parts inside the main unit generate high temperatures and high voltages. To avoid minor injuries, avoid touching the metal studs on the bottom of the unit when you move it. 6

12 Work safely! Connecting the printer In order to print images, you need to connect the Canon Fileprint 250 or Canon Fileprint 400 (sold separately). For details about connection and other important operations for the printer, call for service from your supplier or see the instructions you received with the printer. For more details about these options, contact your supplier. For details about installation and operation, refer to the instructions provided with each carrier. Fiche Carrier 190RII A film carrier which allows viewing of fiche, jackets, or aperture cards up to 105 mm x 190 mm. Autocarrier 100C (AC100C) A motorized Autocarrier for 16 mm cartridge film cartridges (ANSI, ANSI ENCLOSED* 1, Kodak Ektamate, 3M) that features fast autoloading and high speed film feeding for image display. Autocarrier 100M (AC100M) A motorized Autocarrier for 3M or TUSCAN M-Type* 2 cartridges that feature fast autoloading and high speed film feeding for image display. Autocarrier 100R (AC100R) A motorized Autocarrier for 16 mm or 35 mm film wound on standard open reels. FS Controller I A motorized Autocarrier for 16 mm cartridge films (ANSI, Kodak Ektamate, 3M). This carrier is required for reading film marked with blips for image search and retrieval. FS Controller III A motorized Autocarrier for the new 16 mm cartridge films (ANSI, Kodak Ektamate, 3M). This carrier is required for reading film marked with blips for image search and retrieval. Roll/Fiche Carrier 200 A motorized fiche Autocarrier for either fiche, jacket, or aperture card format film, 16mm/35mm film standard open reels or 3M, TUSCAN M-Type* 2 cartridges. * 1 ANSI ENCLOSED cartridge is defined as ANSI MS-15. * 2 TUSCAN M-Type is a TUSCAN cartridge with a 3M-type core. 9

14 Work safely! Lenses The following types of lenses are available. Fixed lens HX (x 7) Zoom lenses HZ01 (x 9.5 to 16) HZ02 (x 16 to 32) HZ03 (x 30 to 55) HZ04 (x 20 to 48) HZ05 (x 10 to 24) Switching lenses Follow the procedure below to install or exchange lenses. 1. If a lens is already installed, grasp the edge of the holder and slide it out of the unit. 2. Gently pull the lens holder all the way out. 3. Use one hand to support the base of the holder, and the other to lift and remove the lens. Proceed carefully, making sure that the lens does not fall out. 10

15 Work safely! 4. Carefully insert the new lens into the holder, and push the lens in until it clicks. Match the two contacts on the rim of the lens with the two contacts on the rim of the holder. These contacts must fit snugly for the lens to operate correctly. Do not touch the contact area with your hands. 5. Slide the lens holder back into the unit. Support the holder carefully so that the lens does not fall out. 6. Push the holder in until it clicks into place. Operation panel and keyboard buttons 1 If you are using the FS Controller l, remove the lower part of the lens 1 then reverse it and attach it again

Operation panel and keyboard keys Operation panel keys This is a summary of the keys on the operation panel Negative/Positive key Three settings are available: ( ) In negative film mode, produces positive prints from negative film images. ( ) In positive film mode, produces positive prints from positive images. ( ) In automatic mode, selects the mode based on the type of film detected. 2 Border key Allows you to remove the dark background or trim the area of the image that you want to print. Three settings are available: ( ) Frames an area. ( ) Automatically removes the black border around the image for printing. ( ) Automatically removes most of the black border around the image but leaves a border up to 5 mm around the image. 3 Print density display Displays the selected print density. Also displays the sharpness and date messages when you set these features. 4 AE key Turns automatic print density selection on and off. If the FilePrint 400 is connected, Hold down the [AE] key for about 5seconds to start the cleaning mode. A4 is shown in the page count display. 5 Print Density Adjustment keys Press to select print density automatically. You can also use this key to select the sharpness level and date. 12

17 Work safely! 6 Print/Error Display Displays the number of prints (01 to 99). Also displays User Calls and Service Calls. User Calls Warn you of problems that require your immediate attention. A user call is a 2-digit code consisting of a letter and a number. User Call L4, for example, means the printer door is open. ( 38) Service Calls Warn you of problems that require the service of a qualified technician. Service calls are 4-digit codes consisting of the letter E and number and then two numbers shown alternately in the display. If you see E2 and 03 displayed alternately, this means Service Call E203. ( 39) 7 Print Number Setting key Use these keys to set the number of copies to be printed. Press the plus (+) key to increase the number and the minus (-) key to decrease the number. You can also use these keys to select the cassette if you are specifying the area and the FilePrint 400 is connected. 8 Clear/Stop key Press this button to cancel printing or change the number of copies to be printed. If the FilePrint 250 is connected, you can also use this button to switch to paper size setting mode. If the FilePrint 400 is connected, you can also use this button to switch to cassette selection mode. 9 Print Start key Press this button to print. 13

NOTE Writes the preset note onto the print. PICTURE Improves print quality of halftone images. SHARPNESS Sets unit into sharpness adjustment mode. 2 Negative/Positive key Three settings are available: ( ) In negative film mode, produces positive prints from negative film images. ( ) In positive film mode, produces positive prints from positive images. ( ) In automatic mode, selects the mode based on the type of film detected. 3 Cassette Select key Selects paper cassette for printing. Effective only if the unit is connected to the Canon Fileprint 400 printer. 4 Border key Allows you to remove the dark background or trim the area of the image that you want to print. Three settings are available: ( ) Frames an area. ( ) Automatically removes the black border around the image for printing. ( ) Automatically removes most of the black border around the image but leaves a border up to 5 mm around the image. 5 Auto Rotate key Rotates the image 90 degrees for printing. 6 Zoom keys Use these keys to record zoom settings. During normal operation, you can immediately switch to the recorded setting by pressing the key. 7 Rotate keys Press to rotate the image left or right by 90 degrees. 14

Also displays the sharpness and date messages when you set these features. 9 Print Density Adjustment keys Press to select print density automatically. You can also use this key to select the sharpness level and date.!º AE key Turns automatic print density selection on and off.! Reset key Use this key to restore or change default settings.! (The knob does not operate while you are using the FS Controller I or FS Controller III carrier.)! Adjust Mode indicators The illuminated lamp identifies the type of image adjustment you can make. You can switch the adjustment type by pressing the Image Adjust Select key (! ). ZOOM FOCUS ROTATION Adjusts the magnification. Adjusts the focus. Rotates the image.! Image Adjust Select key Selects the type of adjustment you can make: Zoom magnification, Focus, or Rotation.!ª Image Adjust Control dial You use this dial to adjust the magnification, focus, or rotation. 15

20 OPERATING PROCEDURES OPERATING PROCEDURES This section describes procedures for normal operation of the unit: Turning the unit on and off. Adjusting the image on the screen to include focusing, enlarging/ reducing, rotating. Printing the image on the screen. Turning power on/off Follow the procedure below to turn the unit on and off. 1. If you have installed an FS Controller III Autocarrier, turn the controller on first. 2. On the front of the main unit, locate the power switch on the lower left corner, then press the I side of the switch to turn the power on. 3. Turn on the power switch of the printer. After you turn on the power, the Print key indicator on the keyboard lights red and enters the warm-up mode. While the unit is warming up, you cannot print. After the indicator lights green, the unit is warmed up and ready to print. 4. To turn the unit off, press the O side of the power switch. Setting the film Load the Autocarrier with the film you want to view. For details about the Autocarrier installation, see the instructions you received with the Autocarrier. 16

21 OPERATING PROCEDURES Adjusting the image This section explains how to adjust the image focus, zoom, and rotation. Proper adjustment is essential for viewing and printing your film. Focusing the image 1. Check whether the Focus lamp is lit. If it is not, press the keyboard's Image Adjust Select key once or twice until the lamp comes on. 2. Turn the keyboard's Image Adjust Control dial to focus the image Enlarging and reducing image size 1. Press the Image Adjust Select key so the Zoom lamp comes on. 2. Turn the Image Adjust Control dial to adjust the image size. Turn the dial left to enlarge the image, or right to reduce it. You can store zoom settings into the M1, M2, and M3 Zoom keys. You can then use these keys to recall the settings at any time. ( 32) 2 17

22 OPERATING PROCEDURES Rotating the image The MS500 offers two rotation methods. You can rotate the image to an arbitrary angle using the Image Adjust Control dial, or you can rotate it in 90 degree increments using the rotation keys. Arbitrary rotation 1. Press the Image Adjust Select key so that the Rotate lamp comes on. 2. Turn the Image Adjust Control dial to the right or left to rotate the image degree rotation Press the left rotation key on the keyboard to rotate the image 90 degrees to the left, or press the right rotation key to rotate the image to the right. 18

23 OPERATING PROCEDURES Printing or The image on the screen can be printed with a printer connected to the unit. This section describes how to set the film mode and execute a print. Starting a print 1. Check the main unit and the printer and make sure that they are both turned on. The power switches should be set to the l position. You can execute a print after both the main unit and printer have warmed up. After you turn on the power, the Print key indicator on the keyboard lights red. After the unit is warmed up, this indicator lights green and the unit is ready to print. 2. Set the film type (negative or positive), or select automatic detection. Press the Negative/Positive key on the keyboard or operation panel to make your selection. The lamp next to the key indicates the current setting. Negative Positive Auto Produce a positive print from negative film. Produce a positive print from positive film. The unit automatically detects the film type and produces a positive print. The Positive or Negative lamp flashes during printing to indicate the detected film type. The HZ-05 zoom lens has no function to automatically switch between Negative and Positive. When using the HZ-05 zoom lens, always use the Negative/Positive switching key to select ( ) negative or ( ) positive. The unit may be unable to detect the film type if the black/white ratio on the film is almost even, or if you have selected a small area near the edge of the film for printing. In this case you will have to set the film type manually. 3. Display the image that you want to print, and display it on the screen. Select the area to be printed. ( 17) 4. Adjust the print density. You can use either automatic or manual adjustment. Automatic adjustment Press the AE key on the keyboard or operation panel, so that the lamp above the key comes on. The MS500 adjusts the print density automatically. Even when using automatic adjustment, you can still use the Print Density Adjustment keys to fine tune the setting. The Print Density display changes accordingly. You can fine tune to 17 different levels. 19

24 OPERATING PROCEDURES or Manual adjustment Make sure that the lamp above the AE key is off. (If necessary, press the AE key so that the lamp goes off.) Then adjust the density by pressing the appropriate Print Density Adjustment key (right arrow or left arrow) on the keyboard or operation panel. The Print Density display changes accordingly, with rightward movement indicating higher density. You can set to any of 33 levels. 5. Set the paper size that you want to print. If you use Fileprint 250, please select paper size set on the Paper Tray. (1) Press the cassette select key or the Clear/stop key on the keyboard and keep on for about 5 seconds to enter the paper size setting mode. At that time, the current paper size appears on the print display. A4 Letter B5 Legal (2) When pressing plus (+) key of the print number setting key, the display is changed in due order as. On the other hand, when pressing minus (-) key, the display is changed in due order as. (3) Press the cassette select key or the Clear/stop key to define paper size that you want to use. If you use Fileprint 400, please select paper Cassette you want to use. (1) Press the Clear/stop key and keep on for about 5 seconds to enter the cassette select mode. At that time, the current paper cassette appears on the print display. Keyboard display Print display Tray selection Multipurpose tray selected Upper cassette selected Lower cassette selected or (2) When pressing the cassette select key or plus (+) key on the print number setting key, the display is changed in due order as. On the other hand, when pressing minus (-) key, the display is changed in due order as. (3) Press the Clear/stop key to define paper size that you want to use. At that time, the print number display returns to "01". 20

25 OPERATING PROCEDURES When you select the paper tray, the current paper size appears briefly on the print display. Make sure that the displayed size matches the paper size in the paper tray. A mismatch will produce an error when you try to print. If the sizes do not match, re-setting the paper size as follows. If using the paper tray, set the paper size of the paper tray. (1) Press the cassette select key and keep on for about 5 seconds to enter the paper size select mode, until the lamp of the paper tray ( ) starts blinking. At that time, the current paper size appears on the print display. (2)Then, press the plus/minus key to set the correct paper size. The size indicator is displayed on the print display as follows. A4 Letter B5 Legal A3 Ledger B4 (3) Press the cassette select key to complete the setting. 6. Set the number of prints that you want to make. To increase or decrease the number of prints: Press the plus or minus key on the keyboard or operation panel to change the setting as required. The setting appears in the adjacent Print display. You can select a value from 1 to 99. To restore the default (1 copy): You can reset the number to 1 by pressing the Clear/Stop key. 7. Now make the appropriate film mode settings if required. ( 22) 8. To begin printing, press the Print Start key on the keyboard or operation panel. You can cancel printing at any time by pressing the Stop/Clear key. 21

26 OPERATING PROCEDURES Setting the film mode This section describes various print settings that you can use to control the quality and format of the finished print. Make the appropriate settings before you begin printing. Picture mode Use this mode for accurate printing of halftone graphic images. You can toggle the mode on or off by pressing the Picture key on the keyboard. The lamp to the left of the key comes on to indicate that unit is in the Picture mode. Automatic density adjustment does not function while the unit is in the Picture mode. Sharpness adjustment Follow this procedure when you need to sharpen or soften the image. 1. Press the SHARPNESS key on the keyboard, so that the lamp next to this key begins to blink. 2. Press the right or left Print Density Adjustment keys to sharpen or soften the image. You can set the sharpness to one of five levels. The Print Density display moves to reflect your new setting. 3. Press the SHARPNESS key once again to register the new setting. 22

27 OPERATING PROCEDURES or Setting automatic border removal An image on negative film is displayed on the screen with a black border around the image, and this black border will also appear in your printed copy unless you remove it with the automatic border removal function. Remove these black borders around your images to avoid wasting toner when the images are printed. -or- You can also leave the border around the image but with very little of the black color remaining. Press the Border key to change the setting. The lamp to the left of the Border key shows you the current selection. To change the selection, press the Border key until the lamp lights next to the selection you want to use. ( ) Select for removal of all black color around the image. ( ) Select for removing most of the black color around the image. Note the following restrictions on the use of this feature: For images with ill defined borders, this function may not operate correctly. This function cannot be used when part of the image is outside the print frame. If several images are on the screen, the image other than the one you want may print. This feature cannot print a border larger than 5 mm around an image. 23

28 OPERATING PROCEDURES or Using trimming Use the trimming feature to crop and print only a selected portion of an image. What is trimming? Trimming means selecting only a portion of an image and cropping it for printing. Only the trimmed or cropped area of the image is printed. For example, you could trim a single article from a full page of newspaper print and print only the article enclosed in a trimmed rectangle. To select trimming, press the Border key on the operation panel until the lamp next to the trimming icon lights ( ). Follow the procedure below to define the area to the image to be printed. Defining an area for trimming 1. Press and hold down the Border key for approximately 5 seconds until the lamp for trimming ( ) starts blinking. The current area setting is shown in the Print display. 2. To adjust the area setting, press the Print Number Setting keys. The starting point or origin for defining the screen area is the lower right corner of the screen. or 4 ;;;;; ;;;;; ;;;;; ;;;;; ;;;;; ;;;;; 4 Plus key Minus key Press to move in the vertical direction. The number in the Print display shows the current screen vertical coordinate. Press to move in the horizontal direction. The number in the Print display shows the current horizontal coordinate. For example, the illustration shows the vertical set for 4 and the horizontal set for 7. The shaded area is the area trimmed and selected for printing To save the setting, press the Border key. The setting remains in effect even after the power is turned off and turned on again. If you have installed the optional Framing Kit, you cannot use this method to set an area on the screen. Use the area setting tapes to define an area. 24

There are 4 tapes on the screen you can move to select an area for printing. The rectangle enclosed by the 4 tapes is the area selected for printing. You can display the image horizontally on the screen, while printing it out vertically. To select this feature, press the Auto Rotate key on the keyboard so that the icon lights up. You can switch the feature off by pressing the key once again, so that the icon goes off. 25

30 SPECIAL FEATURES SPECIAL FEATURES This section describes a number of special features offered by the MS500. Date stamp feature This feature allows you to include the date on your prints. You can choose from various date formats, and you can select the location of the stamp on the print. Switching the date stamp on or off You can switch date stamping on or off by pressing the DATE key on the keyboard. The lamp next to the key lights up to indicate that date stamping is selected. Doing the date settings The following procedure explains how set the date, and how to select the format and position of the date on the print. The MS500 stores the settings in non-volatile memory, so that they are retained even while power is off. 1. Hold down the DATE key for about 5 seconds. The DATE lamp, Print Density display, and Print display all begin blinking, indicating that you can now enter the date and time settings. 2. Check that the leftmost Print Density display is blinking. Then press the plus or minus Print key as necessary to set the year. Display Setting to 1951 to 1999 to 2000 to Press the right Print Density Adjustment key once to switch to month selection. Then press the plus or minus Print key to enter the month. Display to Setting January to December 4. Press the right arrow key again to switch to day selection. Then press the plus or minus key to set the day-of-month value. Display to Setting 1st to 31st 5. Press the right arrow key once more to switch to hour selection. Press plus or minus to set the hour. When you have completed all settings, press the Reset key. The MS500 registers the new values, and returns to normal operating mode. While making the date and time settings, you can move back to a previous setting by pressing the left arrow key. When setting the minute value, for example, you can press the left arrow key once to move back to the hour setting. 27

32 SPECIAL FEATURES Note feature This feature lets you include a short note on your print. You must enter the note into memory before making the print, as described below. Maximum note length is 33 characters. The note is printed in the location selected for the time stamp. If you choose to print both the time stamp and the note, the time stamp appears first, then a space, and then the note. Switching the note on or off You can switch note printing on or off by pressing the NOTE key on the keyboard. The lamp next to the key lights up to indicate that note printing is selected. 28

Check that only the first (leftmost) Print Density display lamp is blinking. Then press the plus or minus key until the code value for the first letter of your note appears in the Print Density display area. Refer to the code table above for the code/letter correspondence. To select the letter A, for example, you would enter the code value Press the right arrow Print Density Adjustment key once to move to the second letter of the note. Enter the letter code for the second letter, again using the minus or plus key. 4. Continue as described above until you have entered all the letters for your note. Use the right arrow or left arrow to move forward or backward in the note, and minus and plus to enter the letter codes. The note cannot contain more than 33 characters, including spaces. The Print Density display shows your current location within the note, as described below. 5. When you have finished entering the note, press the Reset key to store it. The MS500 writes the note into memory and returns to normal operating mode. 29

34 SPECIAL FEATURES Character position display The Print Density display shows your current position within the note by flashing one or two lamps, as illustrated below. When you press the left arrow or right arrow to move back or forward within the note, the indicator changes accordingly. 35 SPECIAL FEATURES The reset feature The MS500 lets you store your own default settings for the film mode. Once you have recorded the defaults, you can recall them at any time by pressing the Reset key. To make best use of this function, you will want to register your most frequently used values as your defaults. Recalling the defaults To change all settings to their default values, press the Reset key. Release the key immediately after pressing it. If you hold the key down longer than 5 seconds, the MS500 switches into defaultentry mode. Entering the default values Use the following procedure to set up your default values. 1. Hold down the Reset key on the keyboard for about 5 seconds. The lamp next to the key begins to blink, indicating that you can now enter the default values. 2. Press the key corresponding to the setting you want to make. For details about the various functions and their settings, refer to explanations given earlier in this manual. You cannot select a default value for the Print setting. In addition to selecting print-mode defaults, you can also use this feature to record zoom settings, and to reassign the function of certain keys on the keyboard. Procedures for both of these operations are given below. These procedures are available only while the MS500 is set to default-entry mode (only while the Reset lamp is blinking). 31

36 SPECIAL FEATURES Storing zoom settings Use this feature to set zoom values into the M1, M2, and M3 keys on the keyboard. You can then use these keys during normal operation to switch the zoom to the stored value. 1. Press the keyboard's Image Adjust Select key as necessary to set the Zoom lamp on. 2. Rotate the Image Adjust Control dial dial to set the zoom to the value you want, while watching the result on the screen Press the M1, M2, or M3 key to store the new value. You can store a different value into each key. After returning to normal mode, you can use the M1, M2,and M3 Zoom keys to quickly switch the zoom rate to the registered value. Each Zoom key is effective only for the lens that was mounted when the setting was recorded. If you try to use the key to change the zoom setting on a different lens, the MS500 returns User Call L6. ( 38) 32

37 SPECIAL FEATURES Reassigning keys The MS500 lets you reassign or disable the operation of the DATE, NOTE, PICTURE, and SHARPNESS keys on the keyboard. To change the key function, proceed as follows. 1. Hold down the key that you want to reassign for about 5 seconds, until the key's lamp and the Print display begin blinking. 2. Set the desired function for that key by entering the appropriate code value. (Refer to the list below.) Use the plus and minus keys to enter the code. The entered value appears in the Print display. Display Function Key is disabled. Operates as DATE key. Operates as NOTE key. Operates as PICTURE key. Operates as SHARPNESS key. 3. Press the Reset key to register the new setting. Repeat the above procedure as necessary to reassign each of the keys you want to change. This feature is available only for the keyboard's DATE, NOTE, PICTURE, and SHARPNESS keys. 4. When you are ready to return to normal operating mode, press the Reset key once again. 33

38 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING This section describes routine maintenance and troubleshooting procedures: Changing the halogen lamp. Cleaning the main unit. Reading and understanding errors and solving the problem. To ensure optimum performance and a long service life for the unit, perform the routine maintenance procedures described below. Changing the lamp The halogen lamp projects the film image on the screen. If it burns out, you will not be able to see images on the screen. Follow the procedure below to change the lamp after it burns out. If the lamp burns out, you will see L5 displayed in the Print display. THE HALOGEN LAMP AND LAMP UNIT ARE EX- TREMELY HOT. AFTER "L5" APPEARS IN THE PRINT DISPLAY, WAIT A FEW MINUTES FOR THE LAMP AND LAMP UNIT TO COOL DOWN BEFORE YOU TURN OFF THE UNIT AND CHANGE THE BULB. 1. If you do not see the image on the screen, check the Print display. If you see L5 in the Print display, this confirms that the halogen lamp has burned out. ( 38) 2. Wait about 5 minutes for the lamp and lamp unit to cool down. Then turn off the unit. 3. On the right side of the unit, grip the lamp unit with firm pressure and pull it from the main unit. 34

39 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING IF THE LAMP IS STILL WARM, WAIT UNTIL THE LAMP UNIT COOLS DOWN. HALOGEN LAMPS BURN EXTREMELY HOT AND REQUIRE MORE TIME TO COOL DOWN THAN ORDINARY BULBS. 4. Push the side lever holding the halogen bulb to the side then lift up the bulb. 5. Replace the halogen bulb only with a Canon specified replacement. Handle the new halogen bulb with extreme care. Do not touch the surface of the new bulb with your bare fingertips. Oil from your fingertips or other foreign matter can cause the bulb to burn unevenly, shortening the service life of the halogen bulb. While holding the company mark on the new halogen bulb up, insert the bulb into the lamp unit. 6. Insert the lamp unit into the main unit with firm, even pressure until it locks into place. 35

40 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Routine cleaning Follow these simple procedures to clean the unit at least once a day to ensure optimum performance and to guarantee a long service life for the main unit. Cleaning the screen and main unit Use a dry, soft cloth or a clean, slightly damp cloth to wipe off the screen and body of the main unit. To avoid damaging the surface of the main unit, never use an organic solvent or cleaner to wipe down the main unit. Cleaning the lens 1. Turn the main unit off. Then remove the carrier and lens unit. 2. Use only a soft, dry cloth to wipe off the field lens. 3. Use only a soft, dry cloth to wipe off the upper and lower surfaces of the lens. 36

41 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Troubleshooting If you are having a problem with the MS500, refer to this table to see if you can identify the cause and find the solution. Problem Screen does not come on, even after turning on the power switch. Screen brightness is uneven or too dark. Image is out of focus. Image is skewed. After pressing the Print key, print will not start. Solution Check the lamp unit and make sure it is set securely. Check the lamp to see if the lamp is burnt out. After the lamp burns out, L5 is displayed. If the lamp is burned out, change the halogen lamp. ( 34) Check the lens and make sure it is clean. ( 34) Check the lens and make sure it is correctly installed. Check the lamp and lamp unit and make sure both are installed securely. ( 34) Adjust the focus with the Image Adjust Control dial. ( 17) Check and make sure the lens and lens holder are correctly installed. ( 10) Check the carrier and make sure that it is installed correctly. For details, read the instructions you received with the carrier. Check the lens and lamp and make sure they are clean. If required, clean the lens and/or lamp. ( 36) Adjust the rotation using the Image Adjust Control dial. ( 18) Check the carrier and make sure that it is installed correctly. For details, read the instructions you received with the carrier. If the lamp next to the Print Start key on the keyboard is red, the unit is still warming up. Wait for the lamp to turn green before trying to print. ( 16) If the Print display shows a User Call Error, look it up in the table. ( 38) 37

42 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING User Call Errors Here is a full listing of the MS500 user-call errors. Refer to this table as necessary to find out what the user call means and how to correct it. Error Number Meaning Solution After removing a piece of jammed paper, a sheet of paper is still jammed in the printer. A sheet of paper has jammed inside the printer. Two sheets of paper have jammed inside the printer. Paper is not set in the printer. Remove the jammed sheet from the printer. For details, refer to your printer manual. Supply paper to the paper cassette of the printer. For details, refer to the printer manual. Toner in the toner cartridge is low, or the toner cartridge is not installed correctly. The printer cover is open. The halogen lamp on the main unit has burned out or is not installed correctly. Zoom key M1, M2, or M3 was pressed, but the zoom value is for a different lens. The lens is not mounted correctly. Wrong paper size in printer feed tray. Printer power is not turned on, or a test print is printing. Remove the toner cartridge and install it again. If the message appears again, replace the toner cartridge. For details, refer to the printer manual. Close the printer cover and make sure it locks in place. For details, see the printer manual. Check the lamp installation and make sure it locks in place. If the error occurs again, replace the halogen lamp. ( 34) Change the lens to the one the used when you recorded the M1, M2, or M3 value. ( 32) Pull out the lens holder and adjust the lens so that it is mounted correctly. ( 10) Re-load the tray with the correct paper size, or change the paper size of the paper tray. ( 20) If the printer is off, turn the printer power switch on. For details, see the printer manual. 38

43 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Service Calls Every time you turn on the main unit, the unit automatically performs a self-diagnostic test. If the unit detects a problem at power on, or at any other time during operation, it will display a Service Call Error message in the Print display. A Service Call Error is a three-digit number prefixed with the letter "E" (Ennn). A Service Call Error message tells the service technician the source of the problem. Follow the procedure below when a Service Call Error occurs. 1. Note the Service Call Error in the Print display and turn the main unit off immediately. Wait a few moments. 2. Turn the main unit on again and watch the display. If you see a "1" in the Print display, the main unit has recovered and you can resume normal operation. When a service call error occurs, turning the main unit off and on again frequently solves the problem. If you see the Service Call Error again (Ennn), jot down the error number, turn the main unit off immediately, then unplug the main unit, printer, and/or carrier from the power source. Call for service and make sure you tell the service technician the number of the Service Call Error displayed in the Print display. 39
