1 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT STAFF ATTORNEY CIVIL RIGHTS MADISON OFFICE (80% TIME) Disability Rights Wisconsin is the designated, federally funded protection and advocacy agency for persons with disabilities in Wisconsin. DRW utilizes a variety of individual and systems advocacy approaches to protect people s rights, including legal and administrative remedies, legislative and policy change, and training. The Staff Attorney is responsible for providing individual advocacy and direct legal representation on disability rights issues, including the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Act; and participating in litigation, systems change initiatives, and outreach and training initiatives such as the Help America Vote Act. This position is located in DRW s Madison office. Responsibilities: 1. Provide effective legal representation in a timely manner on behalf of people with disabilities in cases selected in guided self-advocacy cases. 2. Provide timely information, referrals and legal advice to your assigned clients. 3. Accurately complete intake forms and keep organized and up to date case files. 4. Provide attorney backup and consultation on cases handled by Advocacy Specialists and law clerks. 5. Engage in administrative hearings and litigation with possibility for impact litigation with other attorneys. 6. Provide training to a variety of groups on legal rights issues for persons with disabilities. 7. Participate in DRW systems change initiatives that impact people with disabilities. 8. Participate in outreach strategies, including efforts focused on specific culturally diverse and disability groups. 9. Represent DRW on coalitions, and committees, that address advocacy issues, and/or the legal and civil rights of people with disabilities. 10. Respond to individual request regarding voting rights issues, developing educational and training materials including social media.

2 11. Partner with disability and other organizations regarding voting rights issues, including accessibility. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Law degree and member of (or eligible for admission to) Wisconsin Bar within 6 months after being hired. 2. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and/or disability rights. 3. Experience handling individual cases. 4. Accurately complete intake forms and keep organized and up to date case files. 5. Good oral and written communication skills and experience working independently as part of a team 6. Familiarity with state and federal laws on employment and fair housing, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. 7. Statewide travel required. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 8. Familiarity with special education law. 9. Experience/direct contact with people with disabilities. 10. Experience providing legal backup or advice. 11. Experience/direct contact with persons of culturally diverse background. 12. Litigation experience. 13. Experience in non-litigative approaches to systems change (e.g., legislative advocacy, grassroots organizing, and policy analysis). 14. Experience providing training or public speaking to a variety of groups. Salary for 80% time: $33,200 - $36,650 depending on experience.
