Our chemical society There are more than industrial chemicals in the environment and about 300 has been identified in normal human breast milk (nondangerous levels, so far) Thus, we inherit certain chemicals Big worries concerning hormon-like chemicals (oestrogen-, androgenthyroidhormon-like)
We do not learn from history! 1960-> Chlorinated organic chemicals in nature are discovered to be wide-spread 1980-> Brominated organic chemicals 2000-> Fluoronated organic chemicals such as PFOS (an impregnation agent found in rain, human cord blood, breast milk, ice bears, Lena Sommestad ) No toxicology tests with several pollutants simultaneously WWF

1. Inform your self 2. Advice patients Climate adjusted diet (also health beneficial) Climate adjusted transport (also health beneficial) 3. Reduce energy at work 4. Fly less, drive less 5. Influence food menus at work
Example: Advice about food to 3 patients/week x 40 weeks gives advice to 120 patients/year Food consumes ca 2.5 ton fossile CO 2 / person /year. If one patient reduces food intake with 5 % (for example via 50% reduction of meat consumption) then CO 2 is reduced by ton/year ton x 120 patients = 15 ton reduced fossile CO 2 /health worker
Same type of advice to 120 patients with reduced car travel by 5% gives 7.2 ton reduced CO 2 /health worker + very well documented health effect

How do we deal with these environmental problems at the academy?
We have an environmental management system Commission from the Government in The system ISO was chosen at GU and: Karolinska University hospital, Akademiska hus, Malmö akademiska sjukhus, Sahlgrenska University hospital etc
and the Sahlgrenska academy was certified 2005

Is it really necessary? The Stockholm conference 1972 The Bruntland commission, Sustainable development Rio and Agenda 21, 1992 The Kyoto protocol Rio+10 in Johannesburg Swedish environmental quality goals Regional environmental goals Environmental management system Think global Act local!
So what is an environmental management system? A tool to organize the environmental work and make it more effective. Improvements are necessary. Audits 2007 Biomedicine Clin sciences Medicine Audits GU-units in the hospital area + EBM, Odont. Investigation Policy Evaluation Goals Account Implementation Audits Revised goals every year All inst are visited every 3 to 4 year
Is it really really possible to change the negative development?
New organisation The environmental council co-ordinate the environmental work
Environmental goals for in these areas: Research Education Co-opertion with the society Climate impact Consumption of resources Dangerous chemicals Competens develoment
Information about the environmental work Mail to alt MS Not so much in English yet
The impact on the climate from the work at the academy is investigated with the long-term goal to reach climate neutrality (minimal climate impact). Cycling is good for both the environment and the brain
Sorting of waste increase the fraction of resusable material
Why sort the waste? Waste increases with income
What do researchers say about sorting waste? Reusing by sorting waste in better than burning Press statement KTH Life cycle analysis show that in general one saves energy by reusing material instead of burning even when the energy cost by transport, cleaning etc is taken into account Docent Göran Finnveden m. fl. J. of Cleaner Prod. 13 (2005) 213- Sorting waste saves ca 100 kg CO 2 /year/person
OBS! Strictly forbidden to pour out dangerous chemicals in the sink In the lab, as at home, dangerous chemicals are pooled and packed for destruction.

Nice nice! Environmental award to researchers at the academy! Lina Gunnarsson and Linda Samuelsson, have been awarded Renovas environmental award, kr to develop tools to study how fish react to drugs in water. Grattis!
Joakim Larsson Published online Nature 457, (2009) Indian factories that make lifesaving drugs.(are) spewing enough of one antibiotic into a stream each day to treat everyone living in Sweden for a work week.
