1 2013 Poster Competition Winner Announced! This year, secondary school students from across the country took part in the 2013 NCPIC Poster Competition. Our judging panel (which included a Creative Director and Designer; a Graphic Designer; an alcohol and other drug counsellor; and the CEO of a leading young peoples' mental health organisation) was impressed with the standard of the entries and the original responses to this year's theme of how to help a friend who is experiencing problems with cannabis get the right sort of help? from a GP, counsellor, youth worker or the NCPIC Cannabis Information and Helpline for example. Congratulations to our winner, Justin Brown from Induna School, NSW who won $2000 for himself and $1500 for his school. We are pleased to be able to display this year's prize-winning entries below. The entrants' explanations of their posters have also been included. A2 posters of the winning entry 'Be A Good Bud', will shortly be available to order from our online order form, free of charge. 2 The essence of my poster design is to target younger people that are engaged in friendships with other young people who are either socially dependent or chronic users of cannabis. 2

3 The design demonstrates one friend helping another and also an intended message in the text of the poster. I used the pun 'Be A Good Bud' because that is basically the aim of my design. Help a friend. The green arm consists of different phrases such as: "I want to change, will they judge me?, I don't know what to do etc" conveying the message of the person who has fallen victim to cannabis and is worried. 4 buddy, wanna talk?" showing that it's a friend who can help. All words written on the black arm are things I've told a friend in the past when she started doing marijuana. 6 My anti cannabis poster was designed to capture the attention of a teenage target audience. The message behind the poster is to spend a night in watching movies and catching up with your friend, rather than spending your night getting high on drugs. This message was conveyed in three different ways: the content of the photo, the movies and popcorn which indicate an alternative to smoking cannabis and the NCPIC advice sheet showing how a friend can help out their friend with a cannabis problem. Secondly, the slogan is self-explanatory and tells the viewer what the correct actions are if they want to help their friend who is having trouble. Lastly, the hotline number and the line "need help or advice?" indicate another way to help out a friend in trouble with cannabis, they can call up the hotline and will receive utmost advice and care from an expert. 8 My poster is about how cannabis affects friendships. From this assignment I have learnt what cannabis is and how it affects people, what NCPIC is and techniques to make an effective poster. This assignment has made me believe that cannabis is a bad drug, what to do in a crisis and how to prevent it. It changes my attitude towards it about 75% worse than before. I know the effect it has on people taking cannabis. I have developed the skills of designing, colour effects, researching and selecting in this assignment. This assignment has made me understand more about cannabis than I knew before. 8

This assignment has made me believe that cannabis is a bad drug, what to do in a crisis and how to prevent it.
