38 The Media Initiative for Children (MIFC) Respecting Difference Programme A comprehensive training programme for practitioners and teachers The MIFC Respecting Difference Programme is an intervention programme aimed at improving long term outcomes so that children, practitioners, teachers, parents and communities can become more aware of diversity and difference issues and positively change attitudes and behaviours to those who are different. The programme combines cartoon media messages with an early years programme and resources for children aged 3-6 years. The three days Introductory Training enables participants to reflect on their own attitudes to difference as well as providing them with opportunities to explore the Media Initiative resources and become skilled and confident in using them. A Service Design Manual has been developed to support and assist participants to implement the programme and to weave it naturally into the early years curriculum. A large Randomised Controled Trial has been carried out on the MIFC by Queen s University and the full report was published in autumn The headline results showed that the programme has the potential to make a difference to young childrens attitude to difference. Follow-up training on the programme is also available. 38 Early Years Training Prospectus
