Agenda: Code compliant Structural Steel Connection Design All Components i.e. bolts, Welds, plates, Stiffeners of connections are designed Graphical Interface Generate Detailed Connection(s) Drawings

Steel Connection Design: Steel frame buildings comprises different types of structural elements,. These elements are connected to other elements. This will involve the use of several forms of connections. The basic principles of connection design involves: 1. transferring local forces between components, ensuring 2. consistency of overall structural behavior and 3. the practical aspects of fabrication and erection.

Connections in multi-storied buildings: The main types of connection are: When a change of direction occurs, e.g. beam-to-column, connections, beam-to-beam, connections and connections between different members in trusses. To ensure manageable sizes of steelwork for transportation and erection e.g. columns are normally spliced every two or three storeys. Where a change of component occurs, including connection of the steelwork to other parts of the building, e.g. column bases, connections to concrete cores and connections with walls, floors and roofs.

Connections in multi-storied buildings:

Connections in multi-storied buildings: The main types of connection are: The structural properties of the connections have significant influence on the strength, stiffness and stability of the whole structure. The number and the complexity of the connections influences the time that is required for the static analysis and production of drawings. Fabrication issues i.e. cutting, drilling and welding of main members, plates, cleats and stiffeners is a key factor in erection. Parametric Design and Detailing of Connections addresses the above issues

Components of connections: The main components of connections are: Welds: Considerations include- Fillet or Penetration, offsite or onsite, Bolts: Loaded in tension, in shear or in combined tension and shear. Plates and angle cleats: Consideration includes transmission of high localized forces cause local yielding and local buckling.

Failure Modes of connections:

Parametric Design and Detailing of connections: Depending upon Code Provisions and type of connections, the following or more design checks are needed;

Parametric Design and Detailing of connections: Detailing Checks

Parametric Design and Detailing of connections: Design capacity of welds in Shear: And other checks and calculations

Parametric Design and Detailing of connections: Commercially Available Software e.g. SPACE GASS provide the parametric design and detailing capabilities. How many connections are there in the portal frame?
