Roma's victory against Sporting at the Stadio Olimpico on October left Luciano Spalletti's team in a favourable position to progress, second in Group F with six points from their first three games three points better off than thirdplaced Sporting. Although nothing can be decided at the Estádio José Alvalade, Sporting will be determined to recover that lost ground. Roma, for their part, will know that another victory against the Portuguese team will leave them on the threshold of the last. Roma owed their Matchday success to a 7thminute strike from Mirko Vučinić. He restored the Serie A side's lead after Roma's Juan ( minutes) and Sporting's Liedson () had swapped firsthalf goals. It was the Giallorossi's second home win in Group F after they opened their campaign by defeating FC Dynamo Kyiv, Simone Perrotta and Francesco Totti the scorers. Away from home, however, they have lost their one outing to date, at Manchester United FC on Matchday. Sporting started off with a home loss to United before recording a victory away to Dynamo. Tonel opened the scoring after minutes in Kiev and although Vladyslav Vaschuk equalised for the hosts, Anderson Polga's thminute strike proved enough for Paulo Bento's team to take the three points. Sporting beat FC Internazionale Milano in the sides' group stage fixture in Lisbon in September, Marco Caneira scoring, but this was the Portuguese club's only victory in their last matches against Italian teams. CET Prior to playing Sporting on Matchday, the Giallorossi's most recent Portuguese opponents had been Boavista FC, whom they faced in the second round of the / UEFA Cup. Vincenzo Montella scored the only goal of the first leg in Porto while Hidetoshi Nakata found the net in a draw in the return leg in the Italian capital. Sporting coach Bento has unhappy memories of facing a couple of Roma's players. He was in the Portugal team beaten by Italy in a friendly in April in which Giallorossi captain Totti scored the second goal. Celsinho made his Sporting debut at Roma having joined on loan in August from FC Lokomotiv Moskva. Sporting were in winning form on Sunday as they triumphed at home against A. Naval º de Maio. The Lisbon club took the lead ten minutes in through João Moutinho and despite Diego's headed equaliser for the visitors (), Liedson restored Sporting's advantage on minutes. João Moutinho then missed a chance to get his second from the penalty spot after Liedson had been brought down in an incident that resulted in Naval goalkeeper Pedro Taborda's dismissal. Simon Vukčević () did add a third, however, before Gladstone wrapped up the win in added time. Coach Paulo Bento said: "We started the game very well and scored a goal after missing some chances. Then the team relaxed a bit and let Naval attack and equalise. After the goal we regained control and it would have been fair for us to have been ahead at halftime. In the second half we created many chances and dominated. It was a deserved victory, although the scoreline is a bit unfair on Naval." Derlei and Pedro Silva both missed the game due to left knee injuries. Vukčević and João Moutinho overcame problems with their right thighs to figure against Naval. Vukčević started on the bench. The player has scored 7 goals in the league, in UEFA club competitions, ten in the Portuguese Cup and three in the Portuguese League Cup since arriving at the club early in the / season. Gladstone scored his first goal for the club in the victory against Naval. Derlei continues to recover after suffering cruciate ligament damage in training on 7 September, and is hoping to return in March along with Pedro Silva, who sustained a knee injury the previous week. Following their Matchday defeat, Sporting suffered another setback when they were held at CD Nacional in the Portuguese Liga on 7 October. The Lions lost second place to rivals SL Benfica and fell nine points adrift of leaders FC Porto. Paulo Bento said: "We didn't do much, especially in the first half. The draw is a fair result as we couldn't manage to find a way through the Nacional defence. We have to create more." Marián Had, who preceded Celsinho in joining from Lokomotiv this summer, made his first league start against Nacional, playing the opening half. He had previously started the Portuguese League Cup quarterfinal first leg against CD Fátima, a home defeat. The second leg at Fátima was on October and Sporting won to proceed to the fourteam group stage of the inaugural League Cup on away goals. Fátima striker Carlos Saleiro, on loan from Sporting, struck on minutes, but Liedson's header () made it. Filipe Falardo restored Fátima's advantage five minutes after the interval but substitute Milan Purović gave Sporting hope with another headed equaliser after the hour and seven minutes from time Liedson secured progress. Fátima hit the post twice but were unable to add another scalp to that of Porto, whom they beat in the previous round. Paulo Bento, who fielded a fullstrength lineup having rested players in the first leg, said: "We needed a victory. We suffered a lot but we've shown that we are very strong. I believe these players and this team can get through this bad time. Today we got through the match but not the problems that we are dealing with." The game marked a comeback for Anderson Polga, who missed the first leg and the encounters with Roma and Nacional after pulling a thigh muscle in the win against Vitória SC on October. Veloso returned to central midfield after partnering Tonel in defence against Roma and Nacional in place of Polga. The position is familiar to Veloso, who was a centreback at youth level and played in the role when first promoted to the Sporting senior ranks. Paulo Bento said: "Everyone is making a big thing out of this. People seem to forget that Miguel Veloso spent his entire football education as a central defender. He joined the Sporting squad to play in that position, but circumstances made him play as a defensive midfielder. He will play where I choose." The Giallorossi took the lead after minutes with a low rightfoot shot by Ludovic Giuly, before doubling their advantage in the rd minute when Matteo Brighi headed in a Mancini cross. Empoli fought back in the second half though, a longrange effort by Ighli Vannucchi (7) and an addedtime freekick by Sebastian Giovinco earning them a point. Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said: "In the second half we wasted all the good things we did in the first. I think we missed at least ten opportunities to kill the game when we were up; we need to be more clinical. It was impossible to be fresh after playing the derby four days earlier but we should have scored when we had the chance to finish the game. There are no excuses for that." Spalletti replaced the suspended Danielle De Rossi with Brighi, while in defence Philippe Mexes was rested, giving an opportunity for Matteo Ferrari. Cicinho was preferred to Christian Panucci at rightback and Marco Cassetti to Tonetto on the opposite flank. Roma are the only Serie A side to have found the net in each of their first eleven games of the season. Their scoring streak stretches to matches including the end of /7. Tonetto is the only Roma player to have appeared in all of the club's games so far this season (eleven in Serie A and three in the UEFA Champions League). Alberto Aquilani (thigh), Rodrigo Taddei (calf) and Francesco Totti (foot) all missed the match because of injury. Totti and Taddei have also been ruled out of the Sporting trip, as has Panucci who is short of match fitness having picked up a minor thigh muscle injury against S.S. Lazio. Brighi, who returned to Roma in the summer after a loan spell at AC Chievo Verona, struck his first goal in a Giallorossi shirt against Empoli. He was the eleventh Roma player to score in Serie A this season. Roma are still unbeaten away from home in the league. They have won four of their six games so far, conceding only four goals on their travels, half of them at the weekend. After beating Sporting on Matchday, Roma earned another important victory at AC Milan on October. Mirko Vučinić scored the only goal of the game minutes from time at San Siro when he headed in a Cicinho cross. Roma were also awarded a penalty following a foul which led to Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini's sendingoff, but De Rossi blazed over. With Aquilani, Taddei and Totti unavailable, Spalletti moved leftback Tonetto to a more advanced position alongside Mancini and Simone Perrotta in support of lone striker Vučinić. "It was a great game," Spalletti said. "I think the fans enjoyed it because both sides played open football with great quality. The game was finely balanced until Cicinho provided a good cross for Vučinić, who scored another important goal for us. The defenders had a particularly good game because we came into the game on the back of a series of games in which we conceded many goals." Spalletti said: "I think Vučinić can definitely play alongside Totti when the captain is back in action. It was a very even game, the only difference was we scored three goals and they scored two. Otherwise Lazio had a very good game and they are a very difficult side to face. They fight hard, especially in midfield and are never easy to beat. However we have great quality and we often play well against big teams. We have to improve when we face 'smaller' teams and play with their same spirit." He began his playing career at CF Estrela da Amadora, helping them win the Portuguese Cup in /. He then moved on to Vitória SC before a switch to SL Benfica brought him another cup triumph in /. He then spent four seasons in Spain with Real Oviedo CF. He returned to Portuguese football and Sporting for the / campaign, and a season later helped them win the Portuguese double. He retired from playing at the end of /, and quickly accepted a role in the Sporting coaching setup where he guided the youth team to the national title in /. In October he was promoted to firstteam coach after the sacking of José Peseiro, and quickly improved the side's fortunes, leading Sporting on a run of ten straight victories between January and April. Overall, in his 7 league games in charge in /, he achieved wins and six draws, although a defeat against FC Porto in a decisive meeting meant a secondplace finish. Sporting also lost to Porto on a penalty shootout in the Portuguese Cup semifinals but the club had seen enough for the future. He was rewarded for his efforts in ensuring a /7 UEFA Champions League groupstage berth with a twoyear contract in May. The following campaign Sporting were again just pipped to the title by Porto but glory did come with a win against CF Os Belenenses in the Portuguese Cup final. Spalletti enjoyed immediate success with successive promotions; in his first full season, he led the Tuscan club to Serie B before taking them to Serie A the following campaign. After a good first term in the top flight, Spalletti left to join UC Sampdoria but was sacked after games of the / season. It was the beginning of a difficult period for Spalletti who had brief stays at Venezia Calcio, Udinese Calcio and Ancona Calcio before returning to Udinese in summer. CET UEFA information FARE Action Week The eighth annual Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network Action Week closes with organisers delighted at the paneuropean drive to emphasise the message that racism, intolerance and violence have no place in football. The FARE Action Week is coordinated by the FARE network in cooperation with UEFA. Activities have been designed to raise awareness of the issues and underline football's determination to tackle them. Initiatives have been led by among others campaigning nongovernmental organisations, fan groups, clubs, national associations, ethnic minorities, youth groups and schools. Every highprofile platform has been used by the football community to highlight the fight against racism. From UEFA Champions League and UEFA EURO matches to domestic league games across the continent, the signal to the racists has been clear get out of our game. UEFA's flagship club competition, the UEFA Champions League, showcased the FARE/UEFA activities on Matchday, with all teams displaying their opposition to racism as part of UEFA's contribution to the FARE Action Week. Europe's leading leagues have also been making a stand against racism. All professional clubs in England and Scotland regularly participate and the German Bundesliga expanded its engagement over two weekends so all sides in the top two divisions had the chance to take part in the antiracist activity at a home match. The leagues were also active in Austria, the Republic of Ireland, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia and Slovenia. For the first time, Israel has joined in the Action Week, together with Greece, Sweden and Switzerland as muchvalued newcomers. Antiracist activities have been organised by fan clubs at league fixtures in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, England, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and Ukraine. FARE match UEFA gave further support to the FARE Action Week by staging a match in Nyon, Switzerland, on October. A team composed of UEFA staff members played against footballers from the Organisation Sportive AfricaSuisse at the Colovray Stadium opposite UEFA's headquarters. Before the game, the visitors were shown around UEFA's House of European Football and viewed the many European trophies on display, before emerging as winners on the pitch. Cerebral Palsy finals The Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA) which received UEFA's annual CHFm charity cheque in 7 has held the draw for the CPISRA Football SevenaSide World Championship to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in midnovember with teams divided into four groups of four. Founded in 7, CPISRA is an international governing sports body for athletes with cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury, stroke and other related conditions. CPISRA has its own version of football, a modified sevenaside game that has been played by athletes with cerebral palsy for many years.
