JOHN K. PENNINGTON, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. PLUMBING FITTING AND FIXTURE. i Application filed January 1l), Serial No. 528,193. To all 'whom t may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN K. PnNNiNe TON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and Stateïof California, have invented certain new and useful lm provements in Plumbing Fittings and Fix~ tures; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and accurate disclosure of the same. Generally speaking, my invention pertains to plumbing iixtures or fittings, and 'partic ularly it pertains to cleanout littings for urinals, toilets, sinks, bath tubs and similar' fixtures. The foremost object of my invention is to provide a fitting attachable to fixtures of the aforementioned character in such a manner that access maybe gained to the sewer pipes thereof for the purpose of flush ing out or cleaning out sediment which ordi narily gathers therein fromtime to time; and also to which may be attached a hose or tubing for the purpose of flushing it out with water; each of these operations being accomplished very easily and `quick The merits ofy my improvement will be readily discernible from the following de tailed description, reference being made therein to the accompanying drawings form ing a Vpart thereof, in which the preferred specific embodiment is illustrated; and in which Fig. l is a front elevation of a portion of a plumbing fixture in connection withy which my invention may be used, showing, also in elevation, a housing for my im proved fitting; Fig. 2 is a similar view only showing the lower portion thereof in section, as indicated by the line 2-î2 o_f Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudi nal section taken as indicated by the line 3-8 on Figs. l and 2; Fig. il is an en~ larged section of one of the screw plugs illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3; Fig. ö is a front elevation of the last mentioned plug; Figs. 6 and 7 are side and front elevations, respectively, of another of the screw plugs shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Referring now to> the drawings, the nu meral 10 designates generally a fragmentary portion of a typical urinal or similar fix ture; and, while it is to be understood that my invention, as herein disclosed, may be used in connection with any typical fixture of this character, it is herein illustrated and will be described in connection with a urinal of the type commonly mounted upon galls a short distance above the floor sur ace. The numeral ll designates the bowl or bottom portion of the urinal bowl, and 12 the discharge or flushing pipe leading there from. As in the usual manner the urinal l0 is secured to the wall surface-desig nated herein by the numeral 13-in any suitable manner, as by means of bolts, (not shown). The bowl portion llvis open at its front and is separated from, the dis! charge pipe l2 by the wall let. The pipe >12` may be of any suitable cross sectional con?guration and ofl any suitabledownward curvature or configuration desired. rl he type shown in the drawings, is, however, typical of the construction generally util ized. Ordinarily the discharge pipe 12 is cir cular in cross sectional configuration and is connected at its lower end to a drain pipe` l5 by means of an elbow ñtting.` In place of this elbow fitting or connection I `substitute my improved clean out Íitting ~ generally designated by the numeral 16 to the details of which >I will presently advert. Ordinarily when the usual elbow connection has been used to join. the drain vpipe l2 of the urinal l0 and the sewer pipe 15 they have been joined either by» a screw threaded connection or by a caulked joint; `thereby making a rigid connection and vone that can not be easily separated for the purpose of getting into the drain pipes for cleaning them out. Also, when joints of this character have been utilized it has made the assembling and setting up of such lfixtures, together with the drain pipes, quite difficult and more or less ex pensive owing to the fact that the elbow connection must lirst be screwed into one or the other of these drain pipes and then joined to the other by a caulked or screw threaded connection; and in the latter case requiring that the fixture vbe placed and connected with the drain pipes at the time they are> installed in the wall structure. 'This is an'objectionable lfeature owing-to the fact that it is not usually desired to llo

3 2 f Lil UI 60 install such fixtures until after the build ing structure has been completed and ñnished. With my improved connection these oper ations are greatly simplified as will herein after appear. The main portion of the con nection '16 còmprises a fitting in the form of a' T-connection consisting of a body por tion 17 and a side outlet 13; the latter being positioned adjacent one end of the former, in the manner shown in 3. The body portion 17 is externally screw threaded at one end,-as at 17 L-to form a connection with the internally screw threaded end 19 of a sewer pipe 15. Pipes 15 are ordinarily constructed of cast iron: and, while such a screw threaded connec tion is preferable, either a bolted flanged connection or a caulked joint may be uti-a lized. But, owing to the fact that Athe por tion 17 Vwill ordinarily be connected'to the pipe 15 before the fixture 10 is placed, a screw threaded connection at this point will undoubtedly be the simplest and most ef ficient. r1`he bottom end 20 of the discharge pipe 12 has'é'an annular flange 21; the Ytransverse face 21a of which is rabbetted, as at 22, The side outlet 13 of the connection 16 is formed `to register with and, abut against the face 21a of the lower end20 of the pipe 12; the transverse face 18? of this outlet also being annularly rabbetted, as at 23. AThese opposed recesses 22 and 23 form seats for the reception and retention of an annular gasket 24C, to be clamped and held between these contiguous faces when the members are in place to form a water-tight joint therebetween. The fitting 16 is held in place, as de scribed, adjacent the lower.end 20 of the sewer pipe 12, and the annular gasket 24 is held tightly rclamped within the recesses 22 and 23, by means of bolts 25 extending through lugs 26, on either side of the fitting 16, and through a lower wall 27 ofthe urina-l 10. The lugs 26 preferably extend outwardly on either side of the fitting 16, and may be formed integral therewith; and, ii it should bedesired to simplify the'con struction of the urinal, the bottom wall 27 thereof, far as supporting this fitting `is concerned, may also be in theform of in tegral lugs. extending outwardly from the lower end 20 of the discharge pipe 12. However, in this particular case, it is de~ sired, for the purpose of presenting a neat and sightly appearance, to enclose the dis charge pipe 12 by extending the front wall 28 across and continuing it back on either side to 'form a junction with or abut against the wall surface 13, or to the plane of its attachment to such wall, by walls 29;'these being connected across the bottom by the wall 27 The outer end 30 of the body portion 17 is annularly flanged and internally screw threaded, as at 31, for the reception of an externally screw threaded plug 32, It is to be noted that the end 31 shows its open ing to be considerably larger than the op» posite end of this fitting, where the latter end forms its connection with the pipe 15. This is for the purpose of providing as large an opening as possible for cleaning out the pipe; but these proportions may be varied to suit circumstances. The plug 32 is shown in detail in Figs. 3, l1 and 5; and consists of a main or body portion 33 exteriorly screw threaded, as at 34, to form the screw threaded engagement with the threads 31. An annular flange 35 is formed on the body portion 33 in order that a water-tight joint may be made be tween this plug and the end 30 ofthe fitting 16; and, if desired, a gasket may be clamped between this flange and the end face 36 of the end 30. A reduced tubular neck portion 37 is formed on the plug 32, this being in teriorly screw threaded for the reception oi ~ an exteriorly screw threaded lplug 38. The plug 38 is shown in detail in Figs. 3, 6 and 7; being also provided with an annular flange 39 to engage the face ét() yof the neck lportion 37, vto form a water-tight joint, ' (between which iiange and face a gasket may be clamped) ; and also being provided with a square head 41 which may be> en gaged by a suitable wrenchfor adjusting it to the plug 32. In this connection it may, "` be here mentioned that the periphery of the neck portion 37, is also formed to be en~»gaged by a wrench 'for adjusting it >to the, portion 17. _ The plug 32 has an axial bore or opening 42`extending»through a wall 43; this wall A13 being thinner than the depth of the body portion 33 so as to form a recess dei. A i conical baille is supported concentric with the bore L1-2, upon arms 4:6,fso Athat'its apex 47 will extend into the latter, in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 4f, and its base will be substantially in the plane of the innerface of the plug, The object of this arrange ment is to enable the plug 38 to be removed and a hose connection scrcw-tln'eadedly en gaged in the neck 37, lfor 4rthe' purpose of flushing out the connection 16 and the dis charge pipe 15. ivhensuch a. connection is made with the lneck 37, the conical bafiie will split the stream of water directed into the fitting and direct it outwardly in di verging streams through the openings L19, between the arms Á16, and into contact with the interior of the walls of the portion 17. The whole of the fitting 16, and the at tachment, is enclosed by a cover or casing 50, the configuration of which is clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The bottom 51 is preferably semicircular vto enclose the 80 luñ llu

4 fitting 16, horizontal walls 52 extending out wardly therefrom and forming junctures with vvertical side walls 53. A front wall 54 extends across and joins the wall's51, 52 and 53, leaving the top and back of the casing open. A channel 55 is formed in the bottom wall 27, of the urinal 10, in the manner shown, for the reception of the up per edges 56 and 57, of the walls 53 and 54, respectively. The casing 50 is held sup ported in place, in the manner Shown, by the extension of bolts 25 so as to extend through the horizontal walls 52 and receive nuts 58. In the operation and use of my improved clean-out connection, it is clear that the connection proper may be secured to the dis charge pipe 15, in either of the manners stated, at the time the rough plumbing 1s puti into the building structure; and also that, owing to the character of connection between this member and the urinal or other fixture, the latter may be attached at any time merely by bolting the portion 17 ad jacent the end 20, of the discharge pipe 12, by means of the bolts 25 passing through the wall 27 and the lugs 26. v The casing 50 may then be attached to enclose this fitting, by its adjustment to the lower end of the urinal 10, and the attachment of the nuts 58 to the extended ends of the bolts 25, after passing them through the walls 52. ÑVhen it is desired to clean or íiush out the sewer pipes the casing 50 is first re moved by removal of the nuts 58; after which the screw plug v38 may be removed and a hose connection made with the in ternal threads 48 for flushing out the in terior of body portion 17 and the sewer pipe 16. This is a very simple operation and can be done in a very few minutes without disturbing anything but the cover 50 and the plug 38. In case the cleaning to be done cannot be accomplished by the removal of the plug 38 and the attachment of a hose connection to the neck 37, in the manner hereinbefore described, the plug 32 (with out removing the plug 38) may be removed from the end 30, of the body portion 17, leaving a much larger opening for access to the body portion 17 and the sewer pipe 15, and also the lower end >20 of the discharge pipe 12. Any of these operations are very simple and can be accomplished without breaking any permanent connections or causing any particular inconvenience; and this cleaning out may be done at a very slight expense. While I have herein described a preferred specific embodiment ofniy invention, it is `nevertheless to be understood that I reserve the right to make any modiñcations or changes in structure which will properly come within the scope of the appended claims. `. Having described ai preferred embodiment of my invention, I claim: 1. In a clean-out connection for a plumb ing iixture, the combination of. a body por ' forlsecuring the side inlet of saidconnec tion to the discharge pipe of the urinal, means for securing. one end of said body portion to a discharge pipe, and a removable member in the opposite endfof said portion for gaining access thereinto, said removable member comprising a plug, a secondary plug carried by said plug removable to make a hose connection therewith, and means in said iirst mentioned plug to split and spread a stream of water passing therethrough. 2.
