Students must demonstrate language profi ciency at the third-year level. Students may also do a concentration, minor, or cluster in International Studies. Major International Studies Concentration International Studies (see IDS) Minor International Studies Languages (major, concentration, minors, and clusters) The Department of Languages and International Studies at BYU- Idaho helps students to build speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, as well as cultural awareness in fi ve languages from the beginning to advanced level (Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish). We also certify applied second language profi ciency, facilitate comparative second language learning for students of other languages, and offer coursework for teachers and students of English as a second language. During this era of rapid globalization, everyone can benefit from the vital skills of languages, cultural knowledge, and global competency. We are counseled to learn of things which are at home [and] things which are abroad: the wars and the perplexities of the nations, and the judgments which are on the land, and a knowledge also of countries and of kingdoms (Doctrine and Covenants 88:79). We are further counseled to study and learn, and become acquainted with all good books, and with languages, tongues, and people (Doctrine and Covenants 90:15). Applied Second Language Proficiency Students with advanced foreign language skills campus-wide may complement their declared majors by following the prescribed sequence that demonstrates profi ciency in a second language. One approved upper-division class in Chinese, French, German, Russian, or Spanish One 2-credit independent study class in the foreign language with coursework applied to the student s chosen discipline Completion of the computerized Oral Profi ciency Interview (OPIc) arranged through the department (Requires a minimal test fee.) A notation of Applied Second Language Profi ciency will appear on the student s transcript. The Department will issue students a certifi - cate with their OPI score. 26

2 Online Certificates Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Prepares those with solid English language skills to teach English as a second or foreign language in the U.S. and abroad. English as an International Language (EIL) Provides English language instruction to assist international students to increase language skills for employment and/or continued education. Students will increase their English language profi ciency by focusing on oral communication, listening skills, reading skills, and writing skills. Competency Credit Returned missionaries and others with extensive non-academic foreign language experience may receive up to hours of credit by successfully passing the tests offered at ats.byu.edu/ in any of the languages listed. Alternatively, students who begin their language study at a higher level and receive a C grade or better may petition up to hours of vertical credit for the courses they skip. For help with this option, please contact CLLacademicdiscoverycenter@byui.edu. Native speakers are not eligible for test or vertical credit. Languages and International Studies Placement Students with high school language experience should begin their language study at the highest level possible. An online placement test is available at the department homepage (see below). Returned missionaries start at the 202 level (02 in Spanish). Native speakers begin as follows: 01 in Chinese; 21 in French, German, and Spanish; 202 in Russian. However, native speakers who are language education majors or minors should begin with 202 (02 in Spanish). Notes Language Education majors and minors must pass a profi ciencybased certifying test (Praxis). If students have not had a language immersion experience we strongly encourage them to take part in a study abroad language program. TESOL 78 TESOL Teaching Methods II (::0:0) Course equivalent to SPAN 78 The second of two courses on foreign language teaching methodology. This course emphasizes technology, cross-cultural and linguistic assessment, and classroom management. TESOL 497 TESOL Teaching Practicum (1:1:0:0) Pre requisites: TESOL 200 and TESOL 77 and TESOL 78 This course is a 16-hour teaching practicum in the public schools for TESOL Education minors.
