2 VOLUNTEER AWARDS It is the pleasure of the Recreation & Cultural Services Department to invite nominations for the City s Volunteer Awards. These prestigious awards are the highest honour a volunteer can receive from the City of Prince George. The Volunteer Awards offer an opportunity to recognize those outstanding people who volunteer in our community and give so much of themselves for others. There are four awards that a volunteer can be nominated for including the Recreation & Culture Award, Community Service Award, Youth of the Year Award and Outstanding Volunteer Award. CRITERIA A) Specific criteria for each of the awards is as follows: Recreation & Culture Award: Recognition of individuals who have contributed or are still contributing SIGNIFICANTLY to the development of the Prince George recreation and/or culture scene (including: Recreation, Sport, Culture, Visual Arts and Performing Arts) for a minimum of 10 years. Community Service Award: Recognition of individuals who have contributed or are still contributing SIGNIFICANTLY to the development of the community service scene in Prince George for a minimum of 10 years. Youth of the Year Award: Eligible candidates must attend a school in Prince George and be between the ages of 13 and 18. Candidates must have shown school involvement (including average or above average academic standing, extra-curricular activities and volunteer committees) and must have made SIGNIFICANT contributions in the community (outside of school) through volunteering. Outstanding Volunteer Award: The recognition of individuals who are OUTSTANDING volunteers. They have contributed or are still contributing to the development of the community of Prince George by giving their volunteer time to a number of organizations, groups or disciplines. These volunteers have gone above and beyond the call of duty and have provided exemplary service as volunteers. Must have volunteered for a minimum of 15 years in various organizations. B) The group or discipline must be within the City of Prince George and provide a service for the people in the City of Prince George. C) Absolutely no personal remuneration can be received for the service provided. 2
3 D) The award can be awarded to the same individual twice, only if they have provided an additional required number of years of service. E) Organizations can nominate a maximum of one (1) person per category. If an organization has more than one nominee they must qualify in a different category. F) Nominees must be nominated by a person or a group, and must have at least 3 letters of support from 3 different individuals. These letters should represent the outstanding commitment and service the nominee provided. THE SELECTION COMMITTEE A) Nominations are received annually and all recipients must meet the criteria. B) A selection committee, appointed by the City of Prince George, evaluates and selects the recipients each year. C) Any group or agency wishing to re-submit or re-nominate a previously unsuccessful candidate can do so by providing an up-to-date resume for consideration. D) Recipients of these awards are presented with Certificates at the annual Civic Appreciation Dinner held on March 6th, Recipients names will also be engraved on a plaque, which remains hung at City Hall. NOMINATION PACKAGE NEEDS TO INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: 1) Completed nomination form for the specific award 2) Brief resume including: years of service and contributions to organization/responsibilities 3) Letters of support (minimum of 3) 4) Please include approximately half a page to one full page of notes that could be read out at the Awards Banquet. These notes should speak to the outstanding accomplishments and the volunteer service that the individual has contributed to their organization and/or the community. A community service is defined as service which aids people in need and which affects portions of the community. (Examples would be support groups, services for the disabled and counseling groups.)
