2 ALTERNATIVES TO INCARCERATION (ATI) PROGRAMS These programs are designed to reduce pretrial detention and/or incarceration. These programs may fall under the authority of governmental or non profit agencies. They operate in conjunction with the criminal justice system in all New York State counties. 3 CLOTHING/FURNITURE BANKS Families who may have lost their homes due to disaster, be in transition from homelessness or on the verge of homelessness, may need access to clothing/furniture banks. 4 COMMUNITY BASED HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS INCLUDING FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONS/STUDENTS Community based health education programs are designed to reach people outside of traditional health care settings. These settings may include schools, worksites, health care facilities, and community organizations. Educational and community based programs encourage and enhance health and wellness by educating community members on topics such as chronic diseases, injury and violence prevention, mental illness/behavioral health, unintended pregnancy, oral health, tobacco use, substance abuse, nutrition and obesity prevention, and physical activity. 5 COMMUNITY GARDENS Community gardens can greatly improve people s quality of life by creating cultural and community development opportunities through the involvement of people from different backgrounds, reducing crime rates, enhancing youth development, improving health through healthy eating, beautifying neighborhoods, creating more green spaces, producing nutritious foods, reducing family food budgets, conserving resources, and creating opportunities for recreation, exercise, therapy and education. 24 YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS Youth development programs guide youth in their journey toward independence in young adulthood by teaching them the skills and knowledge needed to function in the adult world.
